They'll probably release it anyway, just as they're about to do with Federation Force and as they did with Star Fox Zero.
If they even acknowledge the backlash, you might have Fils-Aime or Trinen explaining why it's not such a bad game after all; but they won't outright cancel something they've already made just because of bad press.

Considering how Japanese people work, I bet Nintendo employees just bring Miyamoto the good opinions so he doesn't get mad and to lick his ass. Therefore he thinks everyone's happy about his "innovative RPG ideas" and keeps pushing them onto the next game.
I imagine everyone at Nintendo proper knows everyone hated Sticker Star and wants nothing to do with this, but when they greenlit IntSys to make a new Paper Mario, they went ahead and made another SS-like just like they wanted to, and by the time the execs found out what exactly they were doing, they had already poured too much money into it to just cancel.

I've been replaying Paper Mario on the Wii U VC for the first time since 2001, and it's literal perfection.

I'm still livid at how they try to apply platformer philosophies to RPGs. Having more than the bare miniumum Bowser-kidnaps-Peach-and-nothing-else story was a major part of its appeal in the first place.
At one point, we were all only familiar with platformers and developed a fondness for the RPGs. Now they dumb-down the games to appeal to this audience.
What started out as a spin-off to SMRPG in paper form has seems to have been reduced to a glorified coloring book.

No, they said that their favorite element was not the story in Super Paper Mario. This does not automatically translate into "all fans think you should remove the story from every Paper Mario", especially given the fact that it was a Club Nintendo specific survey and not a randomly sampled survey of all customers. Miyamoto used the results as an excuse to implement something he already wanted to do.
