Except the very requirement for becoming a Lord of Cinder is linking the fire. The opening says this (the old Lords of Cinder LITERALLY rise from their graves), Ludleth says this when you first meet him, and if you kill Ludleth he resurrects, seeing nightmares about BURNING for a very long while. All the Lords of Cinder go into Ember form and have fire attacks in their second phase.

The Skull Ring description SPECIFICALLY states it's a transposed item, showing that Ludleth did indeed possess previous knowledge of soul transposition. Nothing in the game hints towards Ludleth using illusions and having created the Firelink Shrine you use as a hub. Before the furtive pygmy (so easily forgotten) separated his lord soul into what became known as Humanity, "humans" were all pygmy's. Humans exist in 4 states: Regular humans like us who are imbued with humanity, humans that have the undead curse but are still present, undead that have become hollow, and humans without any humanity, the pygmy's.
In dark souls, dark isn't the absence of light, but rather a wholly separate force that is in direct opposition to light. The curse of the undead is a ploy by the first flame to ensure its survival. You feed white souls, which are the little embers and sparks of flame that have escaped it, back to the bonfires (or the firekeepers) which are connected to the first flame. When you burn humanity (a dark soul) in the bonfire it's not strengthened because you are fueling it, it's because you are destroying the anti-thesis of the first flame.
Humanity, as mentioend, are all the fragments of the furtive pygmy's lord soul. He didn't have the strength to stand up to Gwyn, Nito, or The Witch of Izalith, so instead he transformed his lord souls into the dark soul and broke it up to give to the pygmy's. Now human, the pygmy's would grow, each one creating more humanity, until the dark is so great that not even the light of the first flame can cut through it.
So, in the end, in a world without fire, or humanity, we would return to the grey, never-changing world that existed before the first flame. "humans" would revert to being pygmys, not hollow undead.

It's just a name. Abyss is something from the first game, god knows how many aeons before. And it was in a vision from Aldritch, which he said reminded him of a sea. It's reasonable to think he misunderstood the Abyss (which might be a term they never had contact with) with a Dark Sea, and called it the Deep.
