I don't agree entirely; The horror aspect made the game a lot more fun and while they could have taken a body horror approach with you simply looking at the aftermath of the WAU's rigorous "preservation", I don't think it would have worked out so well.

Clearly.The WAU is very aware of its shortcomings regarding human life, and spends an enormous amount of time trying to understand its peculiarities so that it can not only save the humans that remain, but allow them to repopulate the planet.
An example of its experiments and attempts to help the humans on PATHOS-II is Catherine's ARK project. The basis of which is based on the Vivarium, a prototype created by the WAU when it saw and tried to help her along. Probably because the WAU realized the humans were going nuts without anything to keep them occupied. The entire plot of SOMA regarding the ARK would never have happened if it weren't for the WAU handing the technology to Catherine on a silver platter.
But the WAU also understands that the ARK is an awful substitute for life, it's just a simulation which will survive maybe a thousand years before going defunct. Instead, it's interested in the bigger picture: How can life survive on a dead planet? Clearly not without some alterations, at least. So it starts making mocking birds during its experimentation, mostly harmless albeit creepy human facsimiles.
The only point the WAU freaks out is when Mark Sarang's dumb ass decides to kill himself, leading to a slew of suicides as they try and 'survive' in a computer simulation. So what does the WAU do? It co-opts Akers to literally put the humans on ice.
When you get 'joined' by Akers on theta you have a pleasant 'dream', which falls apart because the WAU doesn't know how to simulate reality for a mind a century old.
When you approach any of the humans in the basement of theta though, you can 'hear' their dreams, and they are all happy, they are literally in an ARK.
All the WAU wants is enough time to get its shit sorted out regarding life without all the humans killing themselves. The problem is it's a super intelligence, and its actions can be easily misconstrued as monstrous and destructive.
