Just as broken as any other Bethesda game but less handholding for drooling retards than in the newer titles

grab the graphics overhaul mod. there's no reason not to and it's free.

early game you will be weak as fuck and won't be able to hit shit. end game you will be a walking god because you have like ten equipment slots and every piece is enchanted.

also it has one of the top ten heroic journeys of any CaC rpg ever

Download the following mods:
Morrowind Graphics Extender
Morrowind Code Patch
Delayed Dark Brotherhood Attack
Solstheim Rumor Fix

These mods are basically just balance changes and bugfixes that will make the game much more enjoyable to play. Quite a lot of thing in unpatched Morrowind are completely broken, these patches take out the unfun broken things while leaving the fun ones in.

Seconding this. Delayed DB Attack and Solstheim Rumor Fix should be used (on GOTY edition or with expansions enabled, at least) even if you're intending to play purely vanilla for your first time. They let you experience the vanilla game as it was originally designed instead of with the intrusive expansions overriding rumors and screwing up the early game balance.

Add some content mods? It's an amazing game and has a ton of replayability, but once you exhaust all the character styles and have experienced all the factions and paths I don't know what else to do but change it up. Tamriel Rebuilt, Sotha Sil Expanded, maybe even try Arktwend for a whole new game in the same engine.

As for trying something different in the vanilla game, maybe play a pacifist who uses a cheap calm spell combined with lots of intimidating persuasion to keep bandits pacified while you loot all their stuff. Some quests have interesting interactions when you talk to someone who was supposed to be fighting you. For example, you can get the gentleman bandit to turn into a trainer in the Pelagiad inn as if you had paid him even after he attacked your male character for refusing. To further reinforce this playstyle, play at max difficulty from the very start so that you have a reason to avoid combat. Maybe even go with unarmored, since you're no warrior: you're just a guy bumbling around Vvardenfell somehow talking his way into into surviving in the most unlikely locations. There are even a few enemies with actual unique dialogue that you wouldn't have experienced since they're hostile by default.

Well I still wanna play Morrowind, nothing like way too hard modded. I was kinda hoping there'd be a patch that would tweak a bunch of numbers behind spells and fix how broken you can make your character with 0 effort, I don't really want to change the whole world up and add a bunch of new areas.

The idea with using maxed out calm sounds pretty neat, maybe combine it with >>336140214 for anything I have to kill.

Good game. It demands you make a build that caters to the thing you want to do. If you want to ever hit an enemy with a sword, then invest in it fully. Do not pick a Bosmer because they look cool and then jump everywhere, depleting your fatigue, and expect anything other than spending the next 5 mins missing as you swing wildly at a flock of cliff racers.

This game punishes you for not catering to your build properly and has walls in place that demand you specialize down a more narrow path over later Bethesda games catering to allowing you to do everything mostly any time you feel like it.

The world has a lot of charm if you can get past the initial sense of clunk in the way. It still has my favorite TES loot and enemy scaling with properly placed items in the game world.

Quests can be a bit formulaic but there are gems and good lore building ones to be found.

>>

I'll probably look into that, thanks. That's one of the reasons I just end up quitting when I play Morrowind now; I follow a sort of routine and end up a ton of money from stuff like the vaults in Vivec. Just ends up getting boring when I'm an unkillable god after like 4 hours

Both. Code patch fixes engine/mechanical bugs while the Patch Project fixes quest/script/item placement bugs.

In other words, if there's a bug in Morrowind.exe then the Code Patch will fix it. If there's a bug in Morrowind.esm then the Patch Project will fix it.

The only reason to consider not using the Patch Project is that it makes some changes to content and balance to fix inconsistencies, as it has a somewhat loose definition of "bug". Every change has a good reason for existing, but it's not as absolutely mandatory as the Code Patch is since it's not all pure "fixes" and the mod itself is all-or-nothing unlike the Code Patch which makes every change optional. So there's no reason whatsoever to not use the Code Patch, while using the Patch Project is very strongly recommended but still ultimately up to personal preference.
>>
>>336145318
I see. Are there any particularly controversial changes I should know of? And are the mods this anon >>336138035 listed plus the patch project the only mods that could be considered mandatory?

I know there are several official DLC. Other TES games generally have a unofficial patch just for those. Are there any such for Morrowind?

>>336146067
No, not that I know of. That's a good list of mandatory mods. I wouldn't add anything else to it besides the official DLC you're asking about. You can get this to use IN PLACE of those plugins, as it both includes and fixes them: http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43931/
If you don't want to use that for whatever reason, then at least get "Master Index Journalfix" which adds quest tracking to one of the quests added by the official mods. You don't need it if you are using Official Plugins Patched.

Don't use LGNPC for a first playthrough. It adds a ton of new NPC dialogue to the game written by modders. As you can expect, the quality of the dialogue and characters varies quite a bit and it can defocus the game. The abundance of generic NPC dialogue in Morrowind is a notable flaw and LGNPC definitely fixes it, but it's better to install it after you've already played Morrowind so you can appreciate the changes and enjoy the added content for what it is.
>>
>>336147564
Thank you for answering my questions anon. I appreciate it. I am currently playing through some of the older games I missed when I was younger. Morrowind is what I am going to play when I am done with VTM Bloodlines.
>>
>>336148105
Oh right, one last mandatory mod I would add. Morrowind has a somewhat infamous bug known as the "NPC drift". NPCs that are meant to be stationary will slowly move over the course of the game, eventually causing travel providers to fall off their docks or some interior NPCs to phase through the walls and disappear. You can fix this with the "RA" command in the console which resets everyone to their original positions, but there's a mod that fixes the source of the bug so you don't have to keep doing that:

I'm playing this for the first time, vanilla (just the DLC) through OpenMW, and I'm doing a Mage build.
The Mage guild quests in Balmora are tedious as fuck though.
This Khajit bitch first made me collect mushrooms, and now she wants me to get flowers
Is it worth joining the guild? Also, can I join it in another town and not have to do all these shitty fetch quests?

You're doing shitty fetch quests because you're a low rank scrub. As you advance in rank, you'll be doing more investigation stuff, solving disputes and hunting for magical artifacts. Even if you still get fetch quests at higher rank; they feel worth it, because you're not sent to pick flowers or find common soul gems.

>>
>>336149949
So if I do all the scrub shit in Balmora, do I start as an apprentice again in the other towns?
>>
>>336149484
It's definitely worth joining the guild to get discounts on spellmaking and, most importantly, a large supply of Restore Magicka potions. Take the time to teleport to each guild hall and loot the member chest.

While you're there, you can get some other quests in Ald'ruhn, for example. It's really only Ajira's first two quests that are like that, and the quests in Morrowind factions aren't completely linear but rather gated by your rank in the faction which is tied to how many quests you complete for them. Personally I'd say just get the flower quest out of the way since it's the last really annoying one, but you can put it off and do quests in the other Mages Guild halls if you want.
>>
>>336150071
You retain your rank, but you are still stuck with starting off with the shitty jobs. Also join other guilds such as the Imperial Cult or the Temple for the benefits they give you.
>>
>>336150071
No, other quests become available as you increase in rank.
>>
>>336150071
Your rank in the Mages Guild applies to every Mages Guild hall. Some questgivers don't offer quests until you reach a certain rank. But there's almost always more than one questgiver available to you at every rank. You can do apprentice jobs in multiple places, or you can skip some. When you run out of quests from one questgiver they will tell you who to go to for higher rank quests. Eventually you'll be high enough to get the more interesting quests that define the storyline of each faction.

The combat was always considered one of the most boring parts of the game, but complaints specifically about missing didn't really become common until Oblivion released and people went back to play it. When Morrowind released, dice rolls were fully expected by every fan since they were a part of the combat of every previous TES game in addition to the first-person action RPGs they originally ripped off, Ultima Underworld.

Every single thing anyone has EVER said to you is logged in it, after all. For better and for worse.

I can see where you're coming from, though that really only applies to enemy sprites. Daggerfall's a fully 3D and action-oriented game when it comes to its world, controls, and gameplay.

>>336152649
This I very much agree with. Morrowind's combat was more mechanically complex and weapons were much more varied, but Daggerfall's swing controls made it feel much more interactive. It helps that the different swing types were actually meaningful unlike Morrowind's system where every weapon has 1, or very rarely 2, attack types that are actually worth using.
