HL3 is pointless at this point from a business perspective, Valve and Gabe aren't your buddies, they're businessmen looking fort he best way to make money. HL3 wold be a waste of money and would hardly give them a profit compared to Steam sales and Dota 2 and TF2 microtransactions. No matter how much more popular Half Life gets it'll never topple sales numbers Valve was hoping for.

Not true.
Half life 2 was pretty much the launch title for the Steam platform. It was the first game that required steam. It is in a large way responsible for getting the first group of players on steam.
If things start to die down, they will simply release HL3 (which they are still working on and not in development hell like DNF was) and it will be fucking excellent. HL3 is their plan B.
Otherwise you are correct. Theirs no rush to make HL3 at this point, they don't make games anymore.

Valve just used to seem like they were brimming with creative genius. Really, as Steam got more popular I thought that it would be used by Valve to experiement more with their games and not have to worry so much about sales and appeal and focus on making great games they themselves want to make. Sort of like how you'll find actors doing summer blockbusters for the cash and the favours, so they can go and do smaller projects they genuinely love easily.
I would love to see what they're doing there day to day now. It used to sound like a dream factory where the next great thing was always around the corner. Now it just feels like another company. And that's very sad.

The Combine really, really, really stand out in comparison to the dozens of Nazi's in all of the WW2 shooters that came out around that time.

Half-Life 1 didn't have much of a story. Meanwhile, Half-Life 2 didn't even continue that story so much as make meme references to it("Hey Gordon, here's your crowbar, the melee item from the first game which you read about on Wikipedia instead of actually playing it. Now you're all caught up. Enjoy!")while doing a completely new story with some of the same monsters. At best, the plot was written like Lost. You get a bunch of questions (like the identity of the G-Man, who he works for, etc.) and never any answers because the writers didn't even think about the answers yet. They just give you mysterious clues and imply that the answers to your questions exist when in fact they didn't even have enough good ideas to make a third DLC.
