It started as just the "monster that comes back stronger when you defeat it" concept, and examining how you could actually contain it.
Like most of the other problems with SCP anymore, powerlevels and "my OC can beat up your OC" resulted in it being used as a power benchmark against every new special snowflake.

I remember reading some of these years ago and thought they were pretty cool. Unfortunately now what I remember most is that one of the writers basically created a persona for himself as a Doctor for SCP and made himself SCP 001 or something stupid. Like, he can survive being with 682 because the thing won't attack him and shit. Seemed incredibly retarded.
