I remember when I built a giant roller coaster that went around all of my land and buildings in a scenic sort of view. I had booster carts hidden in the strangest spots just to keep them out of view.

i bought minecraft at 0.3, before infinite worlds. hell, before the game had fucking culling built into the rendering engine.
i loved the secret friday updates. i loved the rate at which new shit went into the game. i loved firing up and trying to find all the new stuff. i loved finding new blocks and using them to make new things.
then the pace of the updates started to slow. the game started to run slower. the world generation was switched out for something a lot less interesting. more bugs started cropping up and every update introduced new bugs. instead of extending the possibility space, updates seemed to just give you more chores to do, like managing your hunger, or grinding levels for random enchantments. a lot of the stuff that ended up on the game just seemed poorly-designed.
tons of work went into new, sparkly gameplay systems, endgame stuff etc. caves basically remained the same for years. mining remained the same for years. no new tools, no new ores, no new caves. maybe they were afraid to fuck up the core of what they had, but it just felt dull. every new feature was supported by more grinding.
try the expansions, people said. i tried some of the more popular ones. worthless shit that takes 10 hours of picking magic beans or whatever to get. just ways of filling time for jobless autists. no value.
5 years ago i could have told you how to fix minecraft. now i don't know anymore. it got out of control. nobody working on it or making mods seems to have nailed down what i personally liked so much about it. maybe i just got bored, who knows.

I have very fond memories of playing it with my then girlfriend, we loved it so much, she would build during the day when I was at work and I'd come home and see here adorable signs, then she would go out to work the night shift and I would Play and add thins for her to find the next day. Hunger wasn't really bad initially. I preferred being able to carry around a stack of meat while mining instead of having to fill my inventory with a limited amount of food that takes up too much space and is fiddly as fuck to even cook.
What ruined it was each subsequent update that increasingly buffed the drain rate, meaning you'd run 50 blocks and suddenly you're hungry again.

I probably spent more hours playing minecraft than any other game. But even with all of the fun mods, I think my time with this game is over.
I've had so many servers I played on for months at a time, just to have them either reset or ban me for no reason.
Then I decided to play with friends only. I spent months making this underwater glass city on my friend's server that we all would play on. Then he gives our friend creative mode, and he just builds all of this annoying shit right underneath it.
I think the only way to truly make something great in minecraft is to play it alone, but that just isn't fun anymore.

My friends and I built a train system with traincraft and railcraft that went throughout our town and to our friend's remote house. Then my friend built a track that went really far into a jungle and eventually to a desert village. It was comfy as fuck hopping in the train and going on an adventure with buddies.
Around the time I extended the track to my underwater fortress was the time my friend got creative and ruined everything.

To me, that was the end of Minecraft.
An open world game where you make your own goal suddenly has a win objective. That win objective is nearly impossible to meet on your own, has a great deal of pseudo-lore around it, and if you do manage to beat the dragon, you get one of the worst endings imaginable.
It didn't help that the Wither is 10x harder than the dragon.

I loved that feeling of initial helplessness in a vast silent world.
With ~500 hours of playing in a single world I've had creeping suspicion that there had to be something more sinister lurking.
Endermen had me all worked up until the new mob dropped like a soggy piece of bread on the mystery factor.
I even built traps and a bunker beneath my house with 2 block high ceilings so they couldn't enter, a mushroom growing room, and storage chests for basic needs so I could rebuild if anything spooky happened.
But the time of mining zen I put in turned to some strange anxiety after long hours and I've placed airlocks with TNT pressure plate sensors and manual detonation buttons with obsidian lining at the entrance of all my mines.
I keep piston ladder kicks, lava bucket traps, suffocation, and arrow walls around my mob trap all for no player other than myself.
Maybe I'm still trying to find a way to feel like I'm beating back the silent nights of waiting indoors while the hordes of shit shamble by safely until morning.
The whole reason I liked it was because I felt so weak at times.
Hunger added tedium and sprinting allowed you to escape danger too quickly instead of inching into the darkness afraid of what will pop out.

Remember that while I didn't have the more personal connection with the game that a lot of /v/ oldfags have because of its history, I did have the childlike naivete that it would be excellent. As I get older I get more tired of new things in the media, and minecraft gets more pandering to younger ages, so it feels like I knew minecraft decades ago. The affect of added opposing disappointments amplifies the nostalgia to feel like I loved it before I even existed.
It's fucking weird, I don't want to feel that way obviously. It just makes me feel sick and screws with my temporal perspective. People weren't meant to experience that kind of cultural whiplash. Wonder what other historic examples there are of it? I doubt many.
I teach fucking 8 year olds that ALL LOVE THE GAME today. Every one of them. All the girls, too. And every time they utter the wor,d, it makes me wither inside a little more. It's only been 6 years. They're only 10 fucking years younger than I am. This was never meant to happen.

No, you've just grown out of it. There is so much more to do now, you have so many more possibilities. A lot of things can be automated with work unlike before allowing you to do more instead of grind for materials all day long.
Sure some of the bugs like booster were charming. I remember making huge stations around the world. Shit was hard to make since I didn't plan everything through. But it was great. Now stuff like that is easier. Use dispenser and booster tracks and that's it. But they also added stuff that allows you to make more complex stuff if you wish.
There is a guy that literally used pistons to push pistons to push pistons to push huge piston contraptions to push blocks into chunks that didn't generate in order to fool the game into thinking it should generate 4 skeleton spawner.
Nowadays Minecraft has far more possibilities and potential than it ever had. It's just that /v/ dislike change. The latest update actually made the game challenging for once. But /v/ will bitch because they can't spam their sword.

Space Station 13's has many mechanics, but one way or the other, they intersect with others:

>Science needs them to make cool stuff

>Science stuff usually gets into Research hands
>all around improvements in the station
On the other hand, not much really intersects with each other or feels like a good addition. Potion making didn't really interact with other things, and enchantments don't connect with anything other then experience points and mining. Villagers have nothing interesting other then trading, which usually required emeralds. Emeralds, things that are rarer then DIAMOND, and found in only one area. Many times I found that either you have emeralds with nothing to use them on, or villagers with no easy way to get good trades. Also, the other use, beacons, are bad, requiring many materials for certain buffs that only work so far from the beacon.

I'd say the problem is more that half the fun in being creative is being able to do things that the creator didn't directly program in, using the tools we're given very abstractly.
But on the opposite end of the spectrum is the problem that if the game relies on building very complex things to do simple tasks, building those things repeatedly gets annoying, and I have yet to see a game that allows you to build a machine then mass-produce it as a small-scale component. Unless you count simply saving regions of voxels, but that's not the same because you can't use memoization for that so if you try make something big the game gets laggy.

Potions interact with farming and battle since you need materials that you get through farming and killing mobs. Potions are also needed to beat bosses in a reasonable fashion.
Enchanting needs lapis and the things you want to enchant. They literally interact with everything since they make everything work better and faster. Also with the recent change to armor they are pretty much a must. Anvils are needed to repair your equipment if it's well enchanted and to combine books (or equipment) to get better effects. Also use exp and a shitload of iron.
Villager have a lot to offer if your world is older. Unless you have a nice witch farm, they are your only source of infinite redstone and glowstone. I believe also for Lapis. They can also have nice enchantments which you can buy and combine in the anvil for stronger effects. While emeralds are retardedly rare, mining them isn't your main income for them. You trade cheap shit you can get (paper, gold, rotten flesh) to get emeralds and emeralds to get the things you need.
Beacons are end game things. once you have a zombie pigmen or iron golem farm you will start placing them around your world. You place them in parts you need and you can move them as needed. Place one for mining with haste 2 and a efficiency 5 pick and you're ready to mine 10 blocks per second and just mine everything down.

Before this it was perfect in every way possible. After hunger was added, everything began its slide to shit. Coincidentally, that was also when it began to attract autists like a magnet.
My fondest memories of multiplayer minecraft were playing on Factions servers, where it was vanilla minecraft except it had a bukkit plugin for making clans and protecting area. The catch was that you could blow up protected areas, so it led to this extremely intricate arms race of base design vs. base raiding.
Since you couldn't place TNT in a faction zone you would have to build TNT cannons and blast it in. There were ways to protect against TNT, such as building underground, making walls of water, and making obsidian vaults. Since it was vanilla, mining enough obsidian to make a decent vault was awful, so you never had more than a few chests in a vault. And then of course there were the exploits that were fair game, like using a boat to glitch through a one block thick wall. So if you wanted to protect your vault against that you would have to make it twice as thick, which is difficult with obsidian.
Not to mention that this was vanilla, so to make all this TNT for TNT cannons, and you did need a lot, you had to set up huge mob grinders that took up multiple chunks, you know the kind of mob grinder that had flowing water into pressure plates to funnel mobs into one point where you collected. So you had to build a little mini vault around the collection point of obsidian to protect yourself while you AFK'd there overnight, because it was impossible to claim the whole mob grinder in faction territory, so you just had the collection point claimed and protected.
Can anyone relate to my rambling? I haven't met anyone else that played on these Factions PvP servers, but it was amazing. It blew Rust out of the water in base PvP.

Hunger update was obviously what really ended the passion. The enchanting shit was shallow, awful, and grindy. Then in order to ensure that enchanting wasn't possible, the fucker went out of his way to end mob farms. Not to mention the terrain generation sucked.
The wolves update was a joke, so that was the beginning of the end. After that update we had an update which ruined boatsrip boat roads, then an update which implemented pistons, which while cool, was less functional than the mod despite being given the mod's source code.
