I went through the entire game with a +4/+5 starter falchion.
Hoarde your stones of the ephemeral eyes and play offline. The reason for this is simple - it lets you manually control world tendency. A first time run isn't going to hit pure white but you sure as fuck can hit pure black and the benefits (and hardship) it brings.

Nyet. Flamelurker is a hard wakeup call given the game eases you into 2-1. Suddenly hitting 2-2 afterward is going to get your shit slapped given how aggressive Flamelurker is.
When you are in the Nexus be careful putting down your controller if you are near an NPC.
You might accidentally hit one the the triggers and attack the NPC.

this is the only souls game i played. i picked it up because of all the difficulty hype. it was hard but not ridiculous. i used dagger and shield the whole game. most people seemed to love using huge weapons.
not really anything you need to know going in. have some patience playing it and take things slow or you'll get frustrated.

Not much. You can farm 99 healing/mana items and you can't jump, that's pretty much it.
Don't read a guide.
The levels are quite linear and the NPC storylines aren't ludicrously complicated so there is no need to refer to a walkthrough as it will just ruin your experience.
But one tip, if you explore world 4-1 (Shrine of Storms) there is a decent sword that can help a lot for a beginner.

I would agree with that, though I wouldn't say it's the easiest. I would just say it has the fewest gimmicks. There are no moments like the Anor Londo archers or bullshit platforming, most levels can be run through without fighting anyone, and the bosses are simple patterns and challenges of skill (save for Storm King and Dragon God, which are just tests of not dying).

How the fuck does World Tendency even work?
I've used about 30 stone of ephemeral eyes and hurled myself of ledges and suicided into mobs, all offline, and the demon thing that drops the colorless soul still hasn't spawned.

Though it's clearly worse than DaS, simply because DaS added shitton of good things to its concept, it somehow can't stop being my favorite Souls game and one of the favorite games overall. I don't know, perhaps because it was my first Souls game, but there's still something comfy and magical about its world, melancholic atmosphere, characters and so on. I actually replay it each year, for the first time I wish remaster for PS4 (shrine could be added which is nice, but I think it's a nice touch it was left out since you image all the time what could be in this world).

Bosses
1-1: Throw firebombs
1-2: Hit ankles to knock down, then hit head
1-3: Rescue Biorr from cell in 1-2 (key is somewhere in 1-3) and he'll help you
1-4: If he grabs you, he steals a soul level
2-1: Run as fast as you can down the hall to get to the boss and avoid any attacks on the way
2-2: Try to get him stuck on some of the rubble or something
2-3: Avoid his punches and break the rubble in your path to get to the two huge arrow guns. Once both hands are pinned down, attack his head.
3-1: Use the pillars to block incoming spells. The one that shoots the bigger one is the true form
3-2: A second Maneater will come in after a certain amount of time. Try to stay in the central part with the fire so you don't fall off. Also, you can cut off their tails
3-3: Just a regular invasion/generic NPC
4-1: Drop down to his level and hit his wound until he brings his head down, then attack it
4-2: The guy is blind, so try to move slowly so he doesn't hear you
4-3: Get the sword further into boss area and use it
5-1: Easy fight, no tips, just don't suck
5-2: Another easy fight
5-3: Take right path until you reach the end. You should see a women below. Use a bow and shoot her

Grab the purple flame shield from the dragons roost in 1-1, it's the best shield in the game until you get the dark silver shield, and will trivialize both armor spider and flamelurker, you also get havels ring and the flame stoneplate ring at the same spot if memory serves
Every time I play amd I'm not going for a specific build I just go with the cleaver, it's just unbelievably fucking good, which has already been said earlier

I've been thinking about the Shrine of Storms and the Shadow Men again. DaS3 got me on it. I've been working on the theory that something about the island is magical. I've also been wondering how long the greater demons have been on the island; if the Shadow Men worshiped and revered them, then they might have been demons left over from the first purge. But it's also possible that the greater demons are like Astrae; they didn't start out as demons, they just got turned into them by the Old One. Though I'm pretty sure they've always been dicks, except for the Old Warrior.
Just a reminder that Ostrava is the best NPC in the entire series.

Now in hindsight, I realize that one reason I enjoyed DeS so much was just how calculating shortcuts were, and sometimes uncompromising as fuck.
1-1 and 5-2, some of the longest levels, had shortcuts straight to the boss.
But 1-4, 4-2, 5-1 just straight up say "no fuck you, go through the whole level, and then clench your ass at the boss." I don't think any other souls games has made you go so long without a shortcut as DeS. Really emphasizes prep time and hoping you have the willpower for a LONG outing.
On the same tangent, I think cathedral of the deep from DaS3 is the best level I've seen in a while, its lengthy, yet the shortcuts are so clever. It was the first level to remind me of DeS.

Demon's Souls and King's Field share the same melancholic atmosphere. I can't speak for Shadow Tower since I'm still playing through it, but all four King's Field games have the same weird blend of moody and dreamlike that made Demon's Souls so enjoyable. I had a weird experience with demon souls, it was my 4th souls game and i tried a mage for a change since i always do greatswords. Lo and behold magic is easymode in this one and i do like 8 bosses out of 15 or so first try. I still wanna go back and do a fun melee weapon build..finished it in 2 days and never looked back.

DeS was definitely dreamlike in quality, and not in a Bloodborne insanity way. Constant fog doors, lots of LOUD WIND ambience. Ambience in general was sort of repetitive yet soothing. Its like every level was Dark Anor londo from DaS1 or something.

I actually liked that it was cut out. It had really nice touch to it somehow, like it's left to your imagination what it is and why it was destroyed.
