I played DeS first and I can easily see how DaS is superior to anything else.
The world/level design is some of the best design ever made in a video game. And the fact that you have to go through the first part of the game without teleporting once really puts the emphasis on that intricate, interconnected design that makes sense, makes the world believable, telling story through environment and navigation. And in this world, you travel by foot, you're weak, its scale scares you because you have no safe "hub", you're on a continuous journey and you level up on the fly at any bonfire like you're establishing a camp or something.
Dark Souls is one of the best adventure games ever made.
And yes, right after/at Anor Londo it all goes to shit with no interconnections anymore, but everything before that is so above anything else in the series that it makes DaS the one true Souls that ascended to godhood.

DasIII dude in armoe bosses were interesting unlike dasII dude in armor bosses.
Vordt was on 4 legs, gundyr transformed halfway through, dancer was crouching and had two weapons also moving oddly, dragonslayer armoe used his shield in a cool way, lorian had his brother, nameless king had his dragon, pontiff had his ghost and soul of cinder was a rollercoaster ride of variety and coolness.
