Soft ban means they will exile your booty to a separate server so you can't play online with other fags.
Regular ban is they will stop you from playing at all. I don't think they will or have a reason to do a regular ban.

If they remove those souls somehow I.E. dying twice, won't that get rid of the "invalid data" which would trigger the warning and subsequent ban?
Or would it still stay there until they go to %appdata% and delete the entire save file and start from scratch?
Then there's also the problem of players using programs like x360ce to bind their game controllers getting unfairly banned. When people have been using that since Dark Souls 1.

I don't think DS3 has a softbanned server, does it? I keep hearing it's just plan banned.
Though in this case I think anyone effected can save themselves from a ban by reverting their save from a backup(if they made one) or deleting before a ban wave comes.

You just use cheat engine to change a value on a weapon effect.
In this case he changed the weapon effect value to a value that increases the number of souls for whatever target is hit.
This soul increase is detected as illegitimate by From, and that player is banned if they don't don't back up their save to a non-corrupt version in time.
