Why not have a game with old Link be about rescuing family? Like, Zelda is his granddaughter and he gets his elderly ass out of retirement (having defeated a Gannondorf in his youth) and now has to fight a spunky young Gannondorf while he's well past his prime?
Bonus points if Zelda is constantly helping her gramps with magic while locked away, or sabotaging the Dorf's forces from inside his castle, where she's a prisoner. You fail, and Link's next level is the same, but succeeding makes them easier/shorter/have tittymosters or something.
Alternatively, instead of seeking out the Master Sword, Old Link loses his first fight, then needs to find the Great Fairy to give him his youth back or something.
There's a number of good ways t make older characters work, but a young cast connects more with kids playing the vidya.
