Dear Sheperd,

>>

That's the only thing I really remember about him.

Nah. He was just this whiny little boy who got upset when The Illusive Man stopped paying attention to him.
>>

Memorable for all the wrong reasons. Also the literal definition of plot armour, you could slap his shit so hard that he'd spill cereal everywhere yet that armour prevents you from taking the win.

Will never stop laughing at the fact that he's asian and has slit eye goggles on.

Why couldn't you just shoot him when he was fighting Thane? He might be a super edgy augmented ninja but he can't dodge a Claymore to the face.

is that the only question you had about ME3 really? the game itself plot holed itself practically out of existence it was so rushed

Kai's okay.

>>

No, but already knowing more or less what was going to happen nothing else really surprised me.
It was pretty foreseeable that Mordin or Legion were going to get killed or that the overall was going to make no sense.

But fucking hell, that part was cheap as shit. They just wanted to kill Thane and threw their OC donut steel anime character at him.

Truth to be told:
Good. You opened this message. This isn't actually asari military command. They're busy tending to what's left of their planet.

So you survived our fight on Thessia. You're not as weak as I thought. But never forget that your best wasn't good enough to stop me. Now an entire planet is dying because you lacked the strength to win. The legend of Shepard needs to be re-written. I hope I'm there for the last chapter. It ends with your death.

Well Sovereign and Harbinger were doing different jobs. Sovereign was just an agent, and was supposed to lay low because he'd be fucked if word got out about him. Harbinger was the full-on leader of the army and wasn't there in person so he didn't have to worry about discovery.
>>
>>336041949
Worst character.

>taunting you for losing

There was no change in ammo system, the ammo system is the same. It was a retcon is all, the "clips" aren't actual ammo, they're just things that absorb heat and need to be taken out when they get too hot. The thing about having a huge block of ammo that gets tiny bullets sheared off is still true.

Sovereign was more intimidating than Harbinger ever was, but I was still kind of disappointed that they didn't give him any dialogue in ME3.

Harbinger was hammy, but he was the only Reaper that Shep had any identifiable conflict with at after ME1.

Though maybe that's the point. And they just wanted to backtrack on the taunting and make them seem more impersonable to try and fit the explanation of their motives.
>>
>>336051640
I'm fine with Harbinger having no dialogue in 3.

The only time you talk with Sovereign is a fluke. You poked his digital mind and it spoke to you until it was bored.

Harbinger going out of its way to talk to you on a regular basis removes all threat. This is an ancient bio-robotic monstrosity that has existed from time immemorial and it's got Shepard on speeddial.

>gun that cools down while not in use
>gun that needs reloading

Even if it took 4x as long to cool, you could pull out your side arm and use that instead. Plus you can focus on not getting shot.
Reloading requires attention. People also make mistakes while reloading since they need to do it fast while under pressure.

The cooling would have to take AGES to justify replacing with reloading.

Keep in mind too, that no one can actually load weapons (even future space weapons, it's still taking something out and putting something in) as fast as you can in video games.

Going from overheat to thermal paste pickups was hardly bad compared to how gutted the attachment system was in the subsequent games. >>
>>336050207
>>336050738
it would cost more to make disposable heatsinks that reload faster that a manual internal cooling system. the clips are only usefull for specops or small scale operations, as it is far more cost efficiant to have a weapon with low supply and matinence.

You DO carry multiple (three, actually, not even just 2) weapons in ME, and you COULD swap while one cools in ME1.

Not to mention that combat armor in ME is designed to hold 3 guns with ease, as well as allow them to easily be stowed/drawn when needed.

Considering that, having to reload them all manually rather then having them "self reload" while not used seems like a huge step back.
>>
>>336052398

It really would have been better if it worked the way it did in ME1, but with thermal clips being some sort of usable item like medigel that instantly resets your weapon heat. Then the Soldier class could have had a skill tree that lets them carry more clips and enhances them to prevent weapon heat buildup for a few seconds after being used.

Worst part is, I remember reading that they were trying something like this out early in development, but the playtesters were too retarded to figure out how it worked, so they scrapped it instead.

I liked how fragile it was, considering how mobile it was. Once you got the hang of it, it was easy to avoid getting touched. But the missions really did need some better checkpointing to tone down the frustration of dying to a single mistake after having already taken out ten heavy mechs, especially in the early missions when you had no idea how to control the damn thing.
>>

Since guns all use mass effect accelerators in them, the projectiles that they fire are just tiny pieces of metal that are shaved off from a large block and fired at relativistic speeds, making them just as powerful as large calibur bullets fired from modern weapons. The codex says the blocks are good for several days' worth of duty.

>>336054364
Funny thing is that by the end of ME1 you could have upgraded to the point that you'd be able to fire an assault rifle continuously throughout an entire level without breaks. There was like zero heat generation if you got the best stuff. It was actually a bit boring because you would just incapacitate enemies with paralysis or singularity and then simply stand there and fire at them until they died.
>>
>>336054364

mass effect 1 was probably the most comfy game ever
>>
>>336056360

iirc the bible mentions that it has the same name as a pre-war drug

pretty sure whoever wrote the terminal didn't know that, and also didn't know the current jet wasn't around pre-war, but it still serves as an excuse
>>
>>336055997

It's silly really you could have had the reload gameplay but in many other formats that would be more consistent. A small amount of care in level design would have been all that would be needed.

If we take the lore from the spaceships codex have guns with a small reservoir of a synthetic liquid, in case of emergencies this could be vented out to quickly deplete the weapon's built up heat. Previously this was untenable in standard conflicts due to the liquid being heavy to carry in excess however advances in Omnitool/other plot device technology made rapid fabrication of replacement coolant using scavenged weaponry on the field possible.

Gameplay wise it'd just make every gun behave like Javik's rifle from 3 in that it can cool down on it's own slowly or it could vent and empty it's heat immediately but you'd be limited to doing it only a couple of times and would need to earn more charges by killing enemies for their guns.

>>336056361

Nope. Cerberus upgrades a couple old weapons to use the new heat sinks. Nobody else is mentioned doing it.

Mass effect technology makes it easier to mass produce shit.
>all of this happened on a galactic scale
Yes. That's exactly how they managed to create so many guns/clips.
>in two years
Tight, but not impossible. 6 months in development, 6 months for early production/testing, 6 months for mass production, 6 months for the gangs and fringe groups to get their hands on them. And that's assuming galactic time is on Earth years, which it probably isn't.

>In Mass Effect 2, personal weapons have undergone a massive shift. It was discovered that, in an age of kinetic barriers, most firefights were won by the side who could put the most rounds downrange the fastest. As such, detachable heat sinks, known as thermal clips, were adopted first by the geth, and shortly thereafter by organic arms manufacturers.
tldr; reason behind it clips is that shooting more projectiles means you win, which is what clips allow you to do because they are faster than waiting for a gun to cool. The thing is, in ME you could literally achieve infinite or near infinite firing of your weapon if you use good heat sinks. You don't even need to get the best ones for your gun to fire more consistently than ME2 weapons.
Gameplay wise, thermal clips work EXACTLY like limited ammunition does. Even without a heatsink the gun should still be able to dissipate some head through the air and itself for a fee shots before damaging itself.

I mean, after those lines in ME2 where he mentions poking through crates for stuff people had left lying around, or getting a lot done just by asking people if they need anything, I figured winking at the audience had become his thing.
>>
>>336054639

They technically do have limited ammunition, you just shave off tiny amounts of a solid brick of tungsten or polonium or whatever and fire them at incredible speeds. NPCs do mention running out occasionally, but those are always used to illustrate extremely prolonged combat.

Key phrase. It doesn't matter if you can shoot for a million years, because your shields will give out before then. Heat sinks are good for spacecraft and vehicles that shoot at one another for extended periods of time. But most firefights in ME2 are quick skirmishes between small squads, and in ME3 the reaper forces are too tough, fast, and numerous to defeat with a war of attrition. In both cases, burst damage and hit and run tactics are the way to go.

Real answer:

There's this space shit called Element Zero, or eezo. Lore is purposefully vague on what it is. But basically you run an electrical current through it and you can create a mass effect field. These fields change the mass of objects and areas. So you can create insanely dense and light materials, have FTL travel by basically creating tubes of frictionless space that's not really how it works but that's how I make sense of it in my mind and there are some people with the shit on their nervous system who can do cool force powers. Pretty much everything in the games is based on this tech.
>>
>>336061284

The average docking clamp on a civilian ship from 40K is larger and more well armed than the largest and most well armed ship in the Mass Effect lore.

>>
>>336062175
>have FTL travel by basically creating tubes of frictionless space that's not really how it works but that's how I make sense of it in my mind
the problem with ftl is that the faster an object goes, the more it's mass increases. More mass = more energy required to move the object. This gets worse the closer you get to light speed, meaning the amount of energy required to move something going that fast would be impossible to generate. Mass effect fields remedy this by reducing the mass so much that the amount of energy is easily attained by your average ship drive.

>>336061284

In essence FTL works in the same way the tantalus drive in the Normandy works (creating a gravity well that the ship falls into). Mass effect fields compress spacetime in front of the ship and expands it behind. It's like putting a toy ship on a sheet of paper and dragging the paper across the floor. The ship itself isn't actually moving just the space around it, and it gets dragged on for the ride. This circumvents the conventional rule of being unable to move faster than light.

Nasa is trying to figure out how to do this in real life, but we don't have the unobtanium to do it yet.

The DPS is actually higher when you get the heat generation down enough that you can fire for just thirty seconds without needing to wait for the rifle to cool down.
