Can anyone tell me why this game is considered the best in the series?

>unbalanced weapons

>if you don't buy the overpriced armor, you'll get absolutely raped in the later levels
>THAT FUCKING BOSS BATTLE. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT.
I mean, it's not a bad game, not at all, it's very good, but I would still play the original over this. And that game didn't even strafing.
>>
I thought Up Your Arsenal was considered the best
>>
It's admired for how many gameplay changes happened between rnc and GC

Sure UYA is better but it'll be viewed as how well insomniac really revolutionized the gameplay and slowly improved upon it in later games.

Gotta love how much insomniac told everyone they hated the angry ratchet design from the 1st one and yet deadlocked exists

you could strafe with the hover feature in the first one
>>
>>336026008
This, the addition of strafing alone made GC an extreme improvement over 1. It pretty much set the standard for all of its sequels.
>>
Going Commando was a massive improvement from the first game, and everyone liked the new weapons. Levels design was fine and the new areas looked nice.

UYA is objectively the best, but I hate the orange UI.
>>
>>336025804
I think UYA is the best one personally.

I wonder if Insomniac is gonna reboot all the ps2 games

i find the controls better than SF Zero's, and the gameplay isn't meant to be godlike. it's a mini game.

>if you don't buy the overpriced armor, you'll get absolutely raped in the later levels
I beat the whole game in tier 2 armor. If you're a shitter you can use the shield charger.

>THAT FUCKING BOSS BATTLE. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT.

No, I really don't, but even negative attention is attention, right, not-Sony contracted shill?

That is where I call bullshit. It's not a minigame, you HAVE to beat those levels to progress the story. It's literally just get shot, wait until the enemy flies right into your fire range and kill them. And you do this 20 times per level. It just fucking sucks man. At lease Star Fox Zero had alright level design.

>No, I really don't, but even negative attention is attention, right, not-Sony contracted shill?

> Worse level design than 1
Really? I consider 1&2's level design to be more or less equal. Both have at least 2 paths on all bar 1-2 planets, both generally loop back around, both had a good balance of combat and platfroming/puzzles (but 2 made combat much better). 1 probably had more memorable levels, but that's just virtue of being the first, 2 had tons of great ones as well.
> Unbalanced weapons
I'll take "useless after a point in the game" over "useless 100% of the game by virtue of being useless from a design, not stat perspective". 1 had so many weapons no-one used, ever (every time I replay it I'm shocked to find the Drone Device is a thing because I forget it exists every time). Insomniac made sure to make everything mechanically viable, and encouraged upgrading and buying new stuff. It wasn't perfectly balanced, but by End-game "Ultra" weapons were all balanced again, some weapons just had a bout of uselessness mid-late game on first playthrough.
> Shitty flying sections
Best flying sections in the series. I loved these things.
> If you don't buy armour you die easy
WOOOOOOOOOW! Armour isn't done right in any of the Insomniac games, Size Matters had it perfect. But it's not that big of a deal and certainly not unique to GC, unless you mean to say 1 or Deaslocke are your favourite.
> That boss
What's wrong with it? I beat it without using the turrets as a kid because it was such a cool fight wasted on easy-mode turret bullshit. I fought that mech with my weapons and it was intense. Nothing wrong with the fight.

Going Commsndo's only issues are the Final boss was super lame, the Ice Planet made by one guy in a few days and the story kinda drags in some places.

It's definetly my favourite, it fixed the gameplay issues of the first, introduced almost all the mechanics that became series trademarks (Collectathon planets, arena's, optional extra races/fights for money, weapon and health leveling etc....). All while keeping the special charm and atmosphere.
>>
>>336028847
I think what he's trying to say is, if you already completed the game and play NG+, it's fun to just fuck around with overpowered weapons. And while I agree, it does get boring very quick.

The Vita ports aren't great, the performance is pretty disappointing compared to PS3 or even PS2. That said, it's far superior to e.g. the Jak collection, still playable.
I'd recommend getting it on either of those platforms.
They last each around 10 hours, but starting with 2 there's a lot of replay value thanks to new game+.

You guys think RnC will die out like other long franchises, or did the movie and new game breathe air back into the series.
>>
>>336029437
Crack in Time had cool space exploration, seamlessly landing on moons and stuff, but the combat was really lackluster.

It was also on a 2D plane, so it was more like boat combat with a space background than actual space dog fights. GC gave you a large 3D space to work with and you could end up fighting at any angle, like actual space.

ACiT style exploration with GC flying would be cool, but probably end up really disorientating and frustrating for the player.

The Ratchet games are some of the worst emulated.
You must use software mode, which requires an extremely powerful CPU and ends up being no better than playing on a PS2.
Hardware mode has broken textures everywhere.

Custom mipmaps.
Basically Ratchet and Clank is one of the few games that took advantage of a feature of the PS2's GPU that few other developers used because of tight memory constraints (4MB of VRAM). It makes things run significantly faster and stops "shimmering" textures at low resolutions though.
When PCSX2 was designed, so few games utilized the feature that it made things a lot simpler and faster to ignore it. Now their graphics driver is so titanic that adding the feature at this stage would require a major rewrite.
>>

It was a good thing, cause its better to have reached the apex and then fall down than never to have reached it at all.

Lets face it, Ratchet ain't getting better that Crack in time ever, so lets remember the games that lead up to it instead of those after it.
>>
>>336033409

It's also the reason Ace Combat has fucked up ground textures.

The problem with emulators is that people want them to work today, and not on computers 10 years in the future. They also generally only care about popular games. So they design emulators around speedhacks and you end up with clusterfucks like N64 emulation.

What exactly was edgy? I've beaten that game three times, and nothing ever struck me as edgy. I don't even think he got as angry as he did in the first two games.
>>
i think the core gameplay, weapons and movement are much better than in the first game, and i had a lot of fun in the arena modes, flying sections and racing sections. i also really enjoyed being able to level up weapons

i did not enjoy the third game as much, because it felt like the focus went from being an action-platformer to more of a straight third-person-shooter and those aren't really my thing. the second strikes the best balance

just my two cents. last i played of these games was literally when they came out

>worse level design than the orginal
Can't really say anything about the level designs from a mechanical standpoint but from an artistic view a lot of them were fucking concept art tier & some of the best in the series - Endako, Feltzin, Siberius, Todano, Boldan, Gorn, the list goes on (although they chose forgettable names; had to look most of them up)

>unbalanced weapons
Weapon obsolescence was annoying but you got most of the more fun ones later anyhow

>shitty flying sections
I thought that at first but playing the HD collection they're actually brilliant. Wish they'd bring em back

>if you don't buy the overpriced armor, you'll get absolutely raped in the later levels
Pfft. The only time I buy ANY armour on R&C is for the final skill point/trophy after 100%ing the rest of the game. The games actually get EASIER as you go through - you get more HP & better weapons. Glass cannon gamplay is fun

>THAT FUCKING BOSS BATTLE. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT.
Agreed, although it gets piss easy on challenge mode because they don't scale his HP at all
>1 Ultra Heavy Bouncer shot

Didn't really get it when I first played it but after going through the HD version I can see why it's a lot of people's favourite. 3 is still mine though

>>336029449

It's currently the fastest selling R&C game so if they were using this as a way to gauge interest on whether or not they should continue making more Ratchet games; they probably will.

Honestly I kind of hope they just take a break from this series. It's great but they've been putting out so many games since the original debuted that and I fucking hate neo-Insomniac. Go to Rilgar and turn on the hologuise before speaking to the racing girl. You'll be able to walk on the track and break crates which respawn instantly the moment they get off screen. If you have the taunter you can use that to break crates off screen and since they respawn instantly you'll just keep on breaking them and getting bolts. Try doing it under that elevated platform with the wall of crates on it, during a race you normally jump through it.

I liked how in UYA as you upgraded your weapons they'd get parts added and things added to their behaviors before the big V5 upgrade.

Like the N60, the game's blaster, for example. One level it might get a scope on top, next a guard for Ratchet's fingers in front of the handle. And the shots would change to, at first they're just shots, then they bounce from enemy to enemy, then they shock enemies, etc.

It was a little touch but it really helped you feel like you were getting more powerful as you leveled up weapons. Wish they would do something like that again but I know they won't because it'd require making more than two models per weapon.

UYA Nefarious is the only one I think I remember being solid and challenging but there's a special place in my heart for Chainblade and the B2 Brawler (BRAWLER) (Braaaawleeer)

ToD hyped up the entire Cragmite race as a huge threat, being the reason the Lombaxes are gone helped with that, but then they take care of them in just one game. There aren't even any Cragmites just hanging around in the games afterwards.

Senpai, you going to need at least a high caliber i5 CPU, even i7s struggle to maintain 60fps on ps2 native resolution.

In addition, your settings to be perfect.

They looked like they could be in the background of an episode of Lost in Space, or any other scifi show like that at the time really, and not stand out.

Nah, 2 is definitely the best, it was my least favourite for ages then I went back and did the original trilogy back to back. Loved 1 and 2 much more than I remembered, 3 was always my favourite and I came out of it severely disappointed. 2 had an excellent difficulty curve, some really neat level design (looking at you Silver City), a really sleek aesthetic for everything and introduced lots of neat shit that became constants in every game afterwards.

Plus that "ratchet and clank YOU HAVE A MESSAGE FROM angela YOU LUCKY DEVIL" line always cracks me up

The sheepinator, original or black doesn't matter, makes the Impossible Challenge a joke since it doesn't use ammo. So you're able to unload everything on the two bosses.
>>
>nobody noticed clank was evil when he straight up swears in a pg game.

What a load of bullshit

The music in the first level of GC, not the swamp level the one before it, sounds like something out of some generic spy movie. But in a good way.

All these generic orchestral tracks need is some synthesized percussion to match the feel of the original games.

Yeah. It sounds like a mix of spy and operator as fuck. But not in that cringy way a lot of more recent games do. More like a self aware parody or something.

And repetition. What was good about the original OSTs was that they picked a good sounding snippet of music and used it lots of times. I know it's kind of cunty but there's too much variation in the news tracks to get them memorised.

For example, take the beat of Blackwater City. As an individual beat its pretty good but consider how it's repeated constantly as the core of the song. You will never forget that song because such a good beat was drilled in.

Anyone here play Metal Arms?

I know it's not very related to Ratchet but it felt kinda similar when I played it.
