EE is sort of acceptable lazy way to play the series (I havent played SoD) but you might want to avoid the new party NPCs. The extra arena-combat campaigns were sort of fun in my opinion.
Look up Baldur's gate trilogy otherwise. You should find everything you need by googling that. It's probably the safest way to experience the games in their original glory.

At the start I made a Fighter/Mage and Fighter/Thief party to begin with and it's so crazy how easy the game has become. I'm probably going to opt out Fighter/Mage with a Cleric/Ranger though.

Sure, if you want to power game you can come up with stronger combinations, but it would be impossible to perfectly balance hundreds of PrC and their combinations and thousands of spells.

Myth Drannor went under a while ago, but I am pretty sure that Cormyr Dalelands is still going. Usually has around 10-12 players online ago any given time with up to 30 or so.

Some of those Jaheira flirt dialogues were kind of bad, but I liked the ones for Viconia. If a game is going to include romances, there should be dialogues like that where the PC and the romanced NPC actually talk like they're in a relationship even when it's not advancing the "romance quest". I don't like how most RPG romances just sort of end as if they were just one side quest among many instead of a major part of the story.

Why are fighter/mages considered to be so good in 2E games?
I never played one, but from what I understand they are just mages who are always at least one spell level behind pures, and in return they get some better THAC0.

- Protection against magical weapons = 4 rounds of immortality
- Mirror Image and blur = when you run out of PMW, you can get invincible with this
- Stoneskin
- Timestop = you automatically hit anything while it's up, without regards to your thac0 and victims ac, and they can't fight back
- Simmulacrum = your perfect clone, it copies your inventory AND quick items AND high level abilities - basically you can have 2-3 copies of you running around with Crom Faeyr of Flai of Ages or whatever other OP weapon you like
- you can protect you clone with spell immunity divination or abjuration, so it can't get dispelled or true sighted away (no other fighter character can do this, unless you are fighter/thief with use any item ability and using scrolls)
- you can use scrolls, and they get copied, if in your quick item slots, so have one timestop scroll and anything else you need
- you can use contingencies, that means you can SHIELDS UP at the precise moment you need it
- tensers transformation, although I don't like using this because you can't cast spells or use items IIRC, so it is inferior to the above
- all the other magery you have at your disposal
- you still have your fighter HLA like greater whirlwind
There are probably many more ways to abuse a combination of fighter/mage but these came to my mind instantly. It's seriously OP.

All of that besides melee hits automatically connecting in Time Stop are just general Mage tricks, though. You don't need fighter for that. And if I burn a time stop I'd rather spam spells in that time without fear of getting interrupted.

Sometimes I wish Mages had a few more spells that buff their melee but doesn't take spellcasting away (ie. not Tenser).
Something like Divine Power, Draw Upon Holy Might, Bull's Strength in various D&D editions and so on.
It would probably be really overpowered, but making a good spellblade is much harder than just using a cleric or druid to buff your melee to the heavens.
Especially in 3E where caster multiclasses are so bad.

Fighter/Mage works better in 2E because the XP penalty isn't so bad, but making a melee mage is especially hard in NWN and NWN2.
I think not even Tenser gives you BAB, only attack bonus, which means you will still have the mage 1-2 attacks per round.

Mages can't fight in close quarters while having fighter HLA and wielding all those superb weapons you find later in the game. I'm not saying that pure mage is not devastating as fuck if you can abuse the game correctly but good fighter/mage can be just as deadly. Possibly even more so if you consider single target damage. Also there are monsters in game with fixed magic damage resistance which you can't strip. You can't kill those with horrid wilting spam.
