The fuck? since when are CRT threads not vidya related?
Anyway I'm mad jelly at anyone who has a pvm

Why is Sony so based?
Mods have been faggots lately. I have a 27" Panasonic CRT tv I got a few years ago that I player older consoles on, it's got component, composite, and s-video.
I'll even play my ps3 on it sometimes.
Whenever I get a proper job and save up some money I want to try and find a non-HD widescreen CRT.

CRTs are full of lead and emit radiation, nobody wants to deal with that anymore when consumers will buy shitty LCDs for just as much.

It is was a bigger jump from quality than I was expecting from just using composite before, colors and text look a lot better. I also forgot to mention I got it for free from a local pawn shop because they just wanted to get rid of the thing for space.
Aside from a widescreen 480I CRT It would be nice to find an HD CRT tv that doesn't have HDMI or any post processing of the image, a few of them do exist I just can't remember the models. Being able to get a non digitally post processed and input lag free 1080i through component would make it great for ps3, 360, ps4, and watching bluray rips on.

They have better contrast and colors than any other display technology, but in most cases are limited to 480i resolution, the other huge benefit for gaming is that they have practically zero input latency which is great for games that require precision and timing. This is why there are still some fighting game tournaments where they use CRT's instead of LCD's.

Oh snap an IPS monitor? that sure doesn't sound like a crt to me.
I got this 19" multisync in 2000 or so when my dad bought me an alienware system for christmas as my first gaming PC.

>>336025571
Not him, but I think 10-15ms is the lowest you can get in LCD monitors, and having that on top of 120hz makes it nearly CRT levels of input lag and the perception of lag.
I'm not talking about Response Time, that measure is pure bullshit, it measures the time it takes a pixel to change color, not the time it takes for the screen to show a change when an input is pressed
>>336024628
The thing is, the original thread wasn't really /vr/ related, it was more about why there aren't anyone willing to make "professional" CRT monitors for the hardcore gamer.
I mean come on, you're not going to play quake on an LCD. They even play brood war on crts in korea
>>336025852
to be quite honest i put my fairly new cheapass tv through alot of emu's and gaming sessions and it looks just as good if not better, i find because of the size and my stupid room setup i need to sit further back.
The only reason to have a CRT is to play older games with non-shit picture. There are upscalers that get a good picture on modern displays but those cost an upwards of $300. A good modern LCD will have minimal input lag on a digital source. The lag and awful color arises when you try to use a analogue source on one of these displays, you're stuck with the cheap shitty upscaler built into your display.
>>336025857
I really don't even get what you are getting at there.
Response times aside - IPS cant do fucking blacks at all.
The only good thing about crts is they weren't made to die about 2 years after warranty expires. I'm 24 and the one I have is older than me, I still use it.

This is the same dude right?
Some fag who started gaming in 2010 I assume
Why do you guys use LCDs? CRTs outperform LCDs in every comparison, For example:
CRTs Can do unlimited resolutions, while LCDs Have extremely limited(sometimes even going as low as 800 x 600 as it's max!)
CRTs have response times the speed of light, which means no ghosting, or getting used to it while trying to play games!
CRTs have true color and good contrast ratios. While LCDs have extremely limited color and poor contrast ratios, if you look at the black on an LCD and then on a CRT, there is no comparison, CRT wins.
CRTs are more durable, if you drop one, The monitor lives on. Whilst if you drop an LCD, it's completely ruined.
CRTs don't have input lag.
CRTs do correct upscaling
CRTs don't get deadpixels and unfixable driver IC issues. whereas most LCDs you buy within the first year will have a dead pixel, if not already having one out of the box.
CRTs come in widescreen: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=widescreen+crt&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq
=&gs_rfai=CdsWImWx3TJy0GJXggwTji5TPDwAAAKoEBU_QDx_y&fp=9c2c65350d4186d5
True that CRTs consume more power, but it's well worth the extra ~$0.50 a month to use them.
The only reason CRTs are no longer sold by companies is because it is no longer profitable to sell them, due to the uninformed public only buying LCDs thinking they're better in every way.
CRTs have better text(xp, vista, and 7 come with a feature to make text more legible on LCDs)
sure, LCDs get the job done, but why would you want to use them? They're the PC of the monitor world, Shitty build quality, Fragile, and Don't do the job as well as their counterparts.
why do you guys pay so much for an LCD? it makes so much more sense to want a CRT.
Would PS2 games look better on a CRT? I've noticed the graphics can look pretty jagged on an LCD tv

Any console that can't consistently output 480p (PS2 almost only supports 480i) will look better on a standard definition CRT. Emulators, however, will look better on LCD.
>>336027604
Seeing a GC hooked up to a 16:9 monitor seems so wrong for some reason.

>>336027687

Do people argue this much about something as simple as old TVs? Obviously newer sets have advantages over CRTs, especially in terms of not weighing so much and being easier to transport. But pre-HD consoles look fantastic on them.
I used my grandfather's Trinitron from '94 from time to time. Played THUG, Yakuza 1, Haunting Ground, and Silent Hill 2 along with some PS1 and Gamecube titles on it not too long ago. >>336028531
I suppose that depends on what the tune was timed against, refresh rate or timer
>>336028018
It is though. Anything at HD resolution, use an HDTV tv. Lower resolution stuff, like 6th Gen and below, CRTs are a better bet. I'd say the only not simple thing is the whole rabbit hole of RGB setups and scanline adjustment and what have you. But that's mainly for enthusiasts. For the average person, the best thing is having an HD set-up along with a CRT with your old consoles in your basement or something. Not everyone has the luxury of space, so emulation and ports are another option for older games.

he's probably referring to snow, instead of plain black. That mix of slightly blueish (CRT) ever-shifting grey with a complete lack of form or structure, that you just can't get a visual hold on. Readers of the day will immediately understand it as static. Depending on the TVs modern readers are around, they will associate dead channels with clear blue, or don't understand the idea of a dead channel

Higher picture quality than composite or S-video. The picture quality of component is nearly identical to RGB, save for some luminance differences (which can be adjusted out anyway). So it's a poor man's alternative to RGB, especially if you can get a SCART to YPbPr converter.

Dropped my CRT face-first onto the floor once when it slipped out of my grip. This is a 32" 175lb CRT.
It landed with a massive crash, and a controller was caught underneath. The controller was literally pulverized under the glass screen - it was fucking flattened. But the CRT was fine. I put it back up, started it up, and it played and ran flawlessly.

That being said, if you can't afford the space, how on earth can you afford an OLED TV?
Either way, I understand the option isn't for everyone. If you are incapable of owning two displays, then don't. But if you are, it's very well worth it. But please don't come and try to dismiss CRT owners because you're incapable of owning one personally.
>>336025893
I imagine profitability. How many people, out of the millions of people who play games, on ALL platforms, are going to seriously run out and buy a CRT?

Which is a damn shame, 'cause I'd be all for it.

So, uh, how about all that native 4K content, right? Sure is a lot of it right now, yep. Just turned on my new 4K TV and I'm enjoying watching the new Game of Thrones.

Converter boxes don't emulate CRTs. At best they give you scanline options, but you'll never get aperture grills with a converter box, specially in 4k.

The never part is about aperture grills. Something like the CRT-Royale filter still needs a pretty good GPU to handle it at 4K, and still it's not perfect yet. A raspi could never ever handle something like CRT-Royale at 4K, not even my old laptop could handle CRT-Royale at 1080p.
And considering that the best filter that converter boxes are able to offer these days is still scanlines and nearest neighbor stretching, which is the barebones of filters, I wouldn't hold my breath.
>>336041529
Yes the glow is a shit but it doesnt really affect me since i dont stare at a fucking black screen like an autist

>>336042194
You're just building a monster then. At that point you're better off just getting your old CRT from the attic.
>>336027368
Why do you guys use CRTs? LCDs outperform CRTs, for example:
LCD can have a forward curved display
LCD exists in ultrawide aspect ratios
Top of the line IPS LCDs have true nonblack colors without the 1000 drawbacks of having to own and use a CRT
LCD can handle ultra high resolutions and ultra high refresh rates without exploding
LCD can be dropped and it's just fine because it has a simple clean PCB with a few cables. If you drop your CRT, enjoy either getting a broom and dustpan to pick up all that broken glass or tossing it in the grabage because the ridiculously heavy components broke apart due to the heavy force of the drop
If your LCD ever has any problem whatsoever you can easily ship it out and get a replacement. If your CRT ever has any problem, I hope you have $80 handy to pay just for shipping to send it out
LCDs have USB passthrough ports for convenience
LCDs support far, far, far, far, far superior video standards such as Displayport
LCDs can be mounted on monitor arms with ease to create anything from dual/triple-monitor gaming setups to hexamonitor+ professional workstations
LCDs have monitor stands that can be adjusted for height, swivel, pivot, rotation, etc
Your LCD will never start a house fire
Your LCD does not weight 7 metric tons or give you eye cancer
Sure, CRTs just work, but why would you want to use them? They're the Mac of the monitor world, shitty devices that only the biggest manchildren/hipsters would ever be caught using.

Yes I have, what had I said that makes you think otherwise? I did mention CRT-Royale did I not?
Anon all I'm saying is that if you have a gpu tied to a raspi which connects to your 4K tv through hdmi just so you could get a CRT-like signal output, it's time to consider it's *maybe* not worth the effort.
But again it's your choice. You're the one proclaiming that 4K is currently so much better for retro games but in the meantime those converter boxes are just not there yet. At best you can do it with emulation, which I have no problem with, but you know for some systems and some games it's not possible.
>>336042867
There are different models of PVMs btw, I'm not really that into it so I don't know which is best suites, but all of them are very cuboid

>>336043750
Well what do you want to do with it? If you don't want to go down the rabbit hole that is RGB at least find one with S-video.
Now this thread is making me think of getting a CRT computer screen for old games. Are they worth it for old games such as Counter Strike and DOOM?

>>336043913
It's not garbage sure, but it's overpriced. For the same quality you can always find a competing product that's much cheaper. Sony always overprices their products because people assume it's better. And it used to be back in the day, but now they're just riding on their good reputation, that is slowly being tarnished.
>>336044019
>DOOM
vanilla? maybe, if you want the full retro experience. source port? You're fooling yourself
>>336044048
Not full circle, now we're in a loop again. That solution doesn't exist yet, etc etc, yada yada. Let us continue this discussion in 10 years when the technology actually exists.
>>336044125
Uh, sure. I have no idea. If I check all the retailers in my country, sony isn't usually more expensive than the other options, at least not with TVs. Cameras? Probably
Got 4x PVM 9L2 monitors for free last week. Let another dude have one, told him to come to me first if he ever wanted to get rid of it.
Have to go pull the option card out of another one of my monitors for the 9L2 to have RGB input. Pretty great size for people with small rooms. Much better than the 5 inch monitors. 14 inch is still probably preferable (have 2 of those though so whatever).
Playing with reverse-mounted lenses - found an old Canon SLR at a garage sale for $5, so I got a cheap lens out of it.

>>336040835
The only real handicap to emulating crt is resolution, because of the narrowness of actual scanlines.
On a good 4k display at some distance it would look quite good.
>>336044769
or just get a 4:3 flat panel
>>336044442
I knew you would show up.
>>336044610
PS2 and that generation is the only generation that's in the display limbo. Some games look better on CRT and some look better on HDTVs. And the ones that look better on HDTVs look better with PCSX2 anyway, provided that games is compatible.
So if you're thinking of getting a CRT to play PS2 games, really don't bother.
>>336044914
I did this personally. Its a shitty solution since all 4:3 LCD monitors of a decent panel type have aged and lost brightness and color accuracy.
>>336044926

I decided to resolve to be here and continue not being a dick but using a tripcode anyway.and I'll continue having opinions but generally being helpful

Yes I'm aware. And the distance thing is kind of an important point that most people don't get. But again, they're getting there but not there yet. And CRT-Royale with the default settings looks kinda gnarly, wish they updated it.
CRTs weren't meant to be played upclose just like a PC monitor, you need to give it some distance, so underagebans always comment "that looks terrible" or "it hurts my eyes". Fuck's sake.
>>336045256
>reading comprehension

>>336023750
Makes sense for retro games---especially games that require precise timing like rhythm games. Try playing Parapper the Rapper on a modern HDTV and having the images sync with the audio. Not happening.
It's an edge case purchase---if you plan to get really in Beatmania, DDR or really love scanlines in your classic vidya. Everyone else, need not apply.
I have a PVM, when I first saw it demoing with a DVD through RGB, it was very bright, but with my SNES on RGB it seems dim, even with brightness all the way up.
Any suggestions? RGB signal booster? Not enough power for the PVM?
>>336046470

>>336045786
Most of /vr/ follows the left (aperture grille) meme.
I take your view though and prefer right.
The convergence on right isn't ideal because I haven't cracked it open to deal with it yet. You can probably get the same 'vividness' out of an aperture grille if you bump up the contrast a bit, though.
I just am more comfortable with the right.
