Player works better than Gamer, because games sometimes actually refer to you as "Player", "The Player", "Player One", etc. So when someone who plays video games sees "For the Players" they're inclined to thing "Woah hey, that's me! It's not that it's an insult being called a "gamer" because that associates you with a majority of people that play vidya, but because people have built a cesspool of a social niche around "muh gam3r culture" . It's more that it's degrading being compared to these social dipshits than anything else. SJWs, MLGfags, Esports Wizards, they're all a blight, and it bothers the people who actually play video games and enjoy them.
Take Big Bang Theory for example. Wouldn't it urk you if your Aunt would say something like "Oh Anon, you're playing the N64 just like Sheldon!" Of course it would. Here's a fictional character that's annoying as hell being written by one of the most out of touch people in Hollywood and your hobby is now associated with this guy. It gets harder and harder to enjoy because everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon for the wrong reasons.
Vidya was better when it wasn't as "cool" . Devs didn't try to appeal to every audience, women didn't complain as loudly, and publishers didn't push their shitty buissness onto the customer.

Basically this, I spend a fair amount of time playing games but don't want it to be considered part of my personality. It's just something I do, along with watching TV etc. It's also so mainstream I don't see the point in saying I play games when it can be safely assumed most young(ish) people do in one way or another.
