Okay, so, here's what I've gathered or at the very least have TRIED to gather from the profaned capital:
>The Profaned capital was some big, affluent, cruel and unusual city with plenty of nobles and so forth at some point. It was also a part of Ithiryl valley a province or maybe even the CAPITAL of Ithiryl valley at some point?
>The Profaned Flame was some sort of mysterious third flame: distinct from the bonfires, distinct from the flames of chaos. The Profamed flame was contained and sealed by the cold, cold, Ithiryl tundra.
>Yhorm the Giant eventually pillages and raids the absolute shit out of the profaned capital, but to his surprise the people beg and plead for him to lead him as they figure ANY leader is better than the cruel and corrupt nobility currently leading them.

Why do you have to chase down people who have previously linked the fire? You usually had to get the 4 lords souls, extremely powerful souls, but in 3 you bring back cinders.

Considering Priscilla was basically going to be the DS1 version of MaidenInBlack\EmeraldHerald\FireKeeper, it seems weird that they didn't go with that, considering DaS now stands out as the only game without an interactive leveling npc.
As for Oscar, I think the reason they cut that storyline is the fight would have been mediocre after killing Gwyn - they wanted the Gwyn boss fight to stand alone as THE last boss fight of the game - and while having to kill your constant companion would have had emotional impact, in the end it would have just been a standard NPC fight

Artorias was at a crippling disadvantage. The abyss is naturally inhospitable for him, but fine for us. Besides, he had a cool wolf companion and a haughty catbitch on his side, a sexy midget girlfriend, and one of the best boss fights in the game. He's great.
Undead Legion didn't create the swamp, and they successfully repelled the abyss, and they linked the fire. It's only now that they've become useless.

There is a higher chance that he was killed by the Nameless King seeing as you find his weapon and armor lying about in Archdragon Peak.
Gwyn's Firstborn is said to have defected and fought with the dragons instead, and that his name has been forgotten. Is it a coincidence that the Nameless King, who has no name, fights alongside dragons? They are literally throwing it in your face at that point.

Ornstein actually uses the Lightning Spear miracle in the boss fight. It discharges from his Dragon Slayer spear. You have to have a certain amount of Faith to even use that weapon properly so it's most likely that he was severely talented in lightning-based skills.
Even the Silver Knights that roam Anor Londo in DS3 can't emit Lightning Spear from their spears. They most likely have to utilize that miracle from a talisman like they do in the DS1 opening cutscene.
He can also ground-pound lightning.
So basically we have the Sun King Gwyn who uses no lightning attacks as a boss, and then we have Ornstein who not only has a lightning weapon but uses lightning based miracles...hmmm....

I think they missed alot with Dark Souls 3, instead of focusing on the linking of the flame or usurping it, it should've focused on what happens when a chosen undead fails to link the flame, show what happens in the dark and have alot more of the narrative focus on the Abyss and it's effects on the world.
I mean I can't be the only one who was really intrigued by it during AotA, right? People say they are sick of Manus but I find that we haven't explored it at all. Clearly Dark Souls 3 teases us with elements of the Abyss during Champion Gundyr and certain areas.
