T420 is godly
literally any retro game or arcade game with MAME
>>
>>335961273
Is it? I just bought it. Only has the integrated HD graphics tho, no secondary Intel card like some do.
>>
I played terraria on mine for a few weeks when I had nothing to do but sit on it for a few hours a day.

Also VN's. Or emulate.

why are most laptops so shit looking
>>
>>335961954
Because the Thinkpad line is a business-centric laptop. They're not made to look pretty, they're made for performance and durability in travel.

"laptop" does not say anything.
What are its actual SPECS ?? CPU, GPU, RAM and OS, at least.

Anyway, just about any game pre-2004 should work fine these days. Same with emulators, up to the 5th console generation (N64 & PS1).

>>335961428
Intel HD Graphics from 3000 forward are actually surprisingly capable chips. The HD4000 has been shown to play even Crysis 3 on low settings, 720p, clocking some console-tier 25-30fps average.

You obviously need a decent amount of RAM to back the integrated GPUs up, since they use it as their VRAM. 8GB is still a safe amount for most games.
My 2012 bought cheap Packard Bell has i3 + HD 3000 + 6GB DDR3, and it can run the STALKER trilogy at 720p, high settings, DX8 lighting mode enabled, with some mods, at 70+ fps average.
>>
>>335960927
PS1 emulation works great on shit hardware. Also, old FPS games, RTS, &c.
>>
>>335962125
It's the picture. A T420.

Why would anyone buy anything but a retina MacBook Pro as a laptop?

it's others that look bad

SNES/GBA emulation and the like

If you want a good western RPG, try Gothic 2.
You could also boot up some Command and Conquer games RA2 will probably suit fine for night shifts.
>>
>>335960927
Neverwinter Nights (skip the OC), roguelikes like DCSS and IVAN, Gothic 1 and 2, BG1 and 2.
>>
>>335962251
there's several configurations of that machine. Like said, post specs. Use Speccy, and post screencap of the info it brings up.
>>
I'm replaying Doom with Brutal Doom on at work. It passes the time pretty well.
>>
>>335960927
Roguelikes can eat your time. Dungeon Crawl is my favourite.

Morrowind will also run on pretty much anything.

FTL is the best low-end game to come out in several years, it even won several game of the year awards, it had such success that the dev released an expansion for free (I'd recommend you to play with the expansion from the beggining, it only increases the content without drastic gameplay changes).

Alternatively Enter the gungeon is good too or a GBA emulator.

Stardew Valley
FTL

The only games you ever need to game on PC happily forever are tycoon games and RTS games from the late 90s, early 2000s.

Are there any laptops that can emulate ps2 but don't cost an arm and a leg?
>>
>>335960927
Where do you work OP? I'm genuinely curious. I'd love to net a job where I can play vidya all night (Christ, who wouldn't).
>>
>>335960927
if you like pnc adventure games, scummvm will run on any toaster

plays hundreds of games http://scummvm.org/compatibility/

it's good if your laptop is too shit to run them in dosbox
>>
Set up an external GPU with your t420.

You'll be a little bottlenecked but shit should be fine for a ton of games.
>>
>>335964067
Night audit at a small hotel.

You deal with some guest's issues and people looking for rooms, but not many. Actual paperwork takes about 1-2 hours. 6-7 hours of doing nothing. Worst part is dealing with drunks, assholes and idiots who are surprised you're sold out on a festival weekend.
>What do you mean you don't have any rooms?! Is something going on?
Nigger there's a car show right behind you. Look out the window.
>>
>>335964067
I'm in the same boat as OP. I work maintenance at an office building. Half most nights, I replace ballasts and electronics, clean up a little, and fill out paperwork. But it gives me a lot of time to play handhelds and roms.
>>
Ladtop anon here. As long as you don't care about running on low settings you'll live. You'd be surprised how far a shitty 940M can carry you. Older games like Cod4 will work fine while SFV and KIrequire low settings.

You're shooting for performance, not looks.

>>
>>335960927
Lots of 2D and early 3D games that work beautifully on a slower machine. Emulators are a must, obviously. Then there's a slew of 2D indie games like Cave Story, Freedom Planet, RoR, and Stardew. And then old classics like Legacy of Kain, System Shock 2, Doom, Sonic Adventure 2, AoE series, Civilization, Morrowind... Shit goes on and on.

>>335964457
Is it just a gig, or is it a fairly secure job? Also, what are you making?
>>
>>335960927

Just fucking emulate. Endless games. Everything up until PS1 will run on even budget laptops at this point.

If you're looking for recent releases then I've been playing South Park Stick of Truth flawlessly on my 3 year old laptop. Not Intel. It's some AMD thing but it handles it really well at the resolution my laptop supports.

Hell, just get Dorf Fort if you're looking a fun time sink that will play on most things. Adventure Mode will suck you in and never let you go.

>Just fucking emulate

>>>/vr/
>>
>>335964748
Oh fuck, I was gonna mention this too. I play this all the time during class (in which, coincidentally, we were being taught assembly code).
>>
>>335964875
It's fairly secure. $10hr. It takes maybe two weeks of training but you don't need an education. I'm doing it while going to school. It's maybe 30% math and 70% data entry, at least with my work's setup. It's not a career but if you're looking a low stress job. It's a million times better than when I worked fast food.
>>
>>335964951

>go to the slowest most nearly useless board for suggestions on what to play on my laptop

/vr/ should have never been made. I'd rather have just seen the occasional retro gaming thread here on the faster board. I realize why Moot did it back then since /v/ was so shittily moderated but it's a bit better now.

I also gave the guy two modern suggestions.
>>
>>335961495
>you are constantly busy at work no exceptions
Spot the NEET. I used to work for a small defence contractors doing internal IT, it was my first job ~3-4 years ago. Here was my weekly schedule:

>Monday: All hands on deck, everyone is in the office, everything is more likely to break
>Tuesday: Less busy version of Monday until midday where nothing happens from then on
>Wed-Fri: Absolutely shit all happens, maybe 4-5 people in the office, literally nothing to do
>>
>>335965192
/vr/ is terrible
it's dead as fuck and the only people that inhabit it are autistic
>>
>>335965624

Pretty much. The DOOM generals that were frequenting here are still the staple of the board and you always see them first page.

Relegated generals on /vr/ would have sufficed. Instead it's a dead board with a handful of people still posting. Reminds me of Gamefaqs.
>>
>>335965793

Fuck, meant /vg/ but it doesn't matter anyway. Thread's dead.
>>
>>335965793
At least /v/ still gets some good late '90s RPG threads from time to time. You also can't discuss games like NWN on /vr/ either even though it's almost 13 years old. I would have liked to have seen a shifting cutoff date for games that could be discussed on /vr/

It's not a very big range. It's either an i5 or an i7 second gen with possibly a GPU that isn't at all a whole lot better than the Intel integrated graphics.
>>
>>335960927
An emulator for 16 and 32 bit games. And GBA games too.
Catch up on all the golden oldies you missed!
>>
>>335962437
not that anon, but last I checked they're actually the cheapest in their category.

If you're looking for pure specs it's ain't the thing obviously.
>>
>>335967954
Google says it can have anything from i3 to i7, with 4 different i5 variants, 1-4GB RAM, and so on.
>>
>>335969260
Yeah, and they're all mobile CPUs so it really doesn't mean jack shit, it's not going to run a modern game moderately well, it won't inherently lock you out of being able to play a game another setup would allow, it will maybe be 10FPS of difference

Besides, it's highly likely the RAM at least is upgraded, there's just no reason not to do that, it's a Thinkpad, it's designed to be easily fucked with
>>
>>335969402
a 3.4Ghz dual-core i7 is not going to have any issues running just about any game, and is miles above the lowest end i3 that's mere 2.1ghz with lower memory, etc.

Heck, with those higher end i5 or i7 mobile models available for the T420, you could already consider emulating PS2 games.
