Honestly the devs must be spending more time advertising the game than actually making it.
If the game had a progressive path or paths which became increasingly difficulty, and was structured so it wasn't just completely random, this could be a good thing. After all, we don't need another 60 dollar cinematic experience.
The problem is that Gone Home had the same premise (no story except for the one you make) but you just walked around a house reading old notes. So this coudl be very bad.

Did you even play the game? It's a pretty straight forward story if you're not a retard. Some notes can be read out of order but that's about it. It's a story that was clearly made by a writer.
I don't think you understand what it means for a gameplay to make it's own story. See Civilzation series as far as that goes. No Man's Sky seems like it'll lack that gameplay = narrative though so I don't know.

The game does have a progressive path. The goal is to get to the center of the galaxy (marked by a bright white light) as you get closer you get better resources/ship blueprints/weapon blueprints/etc but the planets also become more hostile (along with increased presence of pirates/sentinels)
