SW4 story-mode isn't very good, but I've only played half of it. They're faction-based and all focus on the new characters, so if you don't know the general overall story you probably still won't by the end. The Oda campaign, which is sorta like the YTRebellion/Coalition, setting up everything that follows, basically all just focuses on one new edgy faggot and how Nobunaga bullied him.
Only other SW I've played is SW2, but that does a good job of it given it's character-based, if you can keep track of time.

Oh, forgot to mention there is one giant flaw to the game and another flaw that's tied to the first one.
You can't manually train your generals (higher levels = more troop count.. this is important) in this game, they only gain EXP from being in battle or following their suggestions during the strategy phase.
The computer doesn't have to follow this rule and raises it's generals' levels via time passed.
There's a rule condition in battles where if one army has a higher troop count than the other at the start, the one with the advantage gets a buff to their stats for every person in that army. The bigger the troop discrepancy, the bigger the buff.
AI effectiveness of generals off-screen is determined by several variables, troop count being one of the bigger factors.

Keep in mind that it's a low budget show. It only had a budget of $30 million to make 95 episodes, so it's obvious where it cuts corners. However, when it goes all out, it goes fucking great. Horses, chariots, and some of the duels are great, particularly Xu Chu's.
