They don't have to be that flashy and colorful but it's good to get some sort of jacket or suit made for motorcycle riding as they generally give you a little extra protection in case you fall off.

I wear a power-ranger jacket, jeans, and the normal helmet/gloves/boots. I have a pair of riding pants but I only wear them if going on a long trip or am hitting twisties.
You could ride in nothing but a speedo if you want, but it's going to hurt if you fall.
