Yee. Downgrading is as safe as its getting right now though. If you have OoT 3D/SPMD+Powersaves or Cubic Ninja, you can access the Homebrew channel and do the downgrade. Now, you can have a CFW on your sysNAND, so GBA games are no longer annoying to install

Either way, your choice not to downgrade. I won't say you're wrong. Different opinions and all. Region free, custom themes, and so on are pretty nifty though. Played and completed Hyrule Warriors before it was even out in the States. Not to mention streaming from the n3DS, screenshots, and activating cheats. If that sort of stuff doesn't interest you though, just ignore it. Hacking the 3DS isn't for everyone, and it's selection of games doesn't appeal to everyone.
I've been playing Cave Story, AA Trilogy, and GBA ROMhacks lately anyhow. The console is pretty solid for emulation on the go.

Region free is good if you want early access to games. Hyrule Warriors, for example, was already fully translated when it was released in Japan if you played on an English-set console. Plus, I used it to go online with the new Flipnote since Hatena or whatever was cut from EU/US. I don't speak nip, but I worked my way around the menus.
Also, I'm sorry the downgrade process failed for you. It can be very fickle. It didn't work perfectly for me the first few times either. Frankenfirmware is no fun for anyone, anon.

Any CFW that lets you use sysNAND CFW should be fine (as long as you aren't playing them on emuNAND, that is). Cakes and Luma both support AGB patching IIRC, so it's plug 'n play. Frankly, I'm not sure about Cakes, but I know for sure about Luma since it's my choice of CFW.

Regional saves can be tricky. Some are region-locked; others aren't. My recommendation is to back up with SaveDataFiler and install the saves to the NA/EU version by changing the game's title-id in the backup folder. Worst case scenario, your data is corrupted on the new version.
