I'm terrible at the game too, but only because I'm out of practice with Souls in general. Took three tries on Iudex because tried cheesing him out Pyromancer style and I underestimated the range of his attacks, especially after the mutation. It did eventually work though, I killed him with nothing but fireballs and firebombs and I feel no shame for doing so.
