I can't speak to multiplayer though and heard the same thing. They tried focusing more on multiplayer in AC5 and that didn't turn out so great.
But again, fast manueverable ACs have always been the, pardon the pun, core of the series, 2 included, which, if you tuned your AC properly, you could hypothetically fly indefinitely.
I could be wrong but isn't that the fun of AC?

I'll also second Mechwarrior but I would never recommend MWO to anyone who doesn't enjoy grinding with shitbox robots or paying 20 or 30 bux for a mech that might actually be sort of decent. All MWO has going for it is a somewhat alive multiplayer community.
Pretty much every real Mechwarrior game is better. Mechwarrior 3 is my favorite though has trouble running on certain modern PCs, but MW2: Mercenaries and MW4: Mercenaries are also fantastic, and all of these titles I just named have big salvage/economy mechanics. MW3 is nothing but what you pick up off of dead clanners and from destroyed outposts for your salvage, while the mercenary titles allow salvage work and also a black market to purchase and sell weapons and mechs.
Mechcommander is also a fantastic game with a similar appeal in an RTS format, and MC2 is pretty okay as well though its enemy AI is totally fucking retarded and easily exploited.

There was nothing generic about the design or gameplay, the only thing generic is the vague story about warring nations, which isn't a flaw of the game itself.
What is a flaw is the retarded min/max designs that were required to perform well online against other players. If you didn't have all of your guns positioned directly in front of your cockpit, or a giant wall of armor plates protecting the front of your mech, or your cockpit facing backwards and on the backside of your mech, you got completely demolished. It was an unbalanced joke of a game that desperately needed the removal of spacers and probably a massive increase in cockpit health.

I'd rather they spent more time with the free-form elements of multiplayer as seen in games like the Souls franchise than FORCED TEAM COMBAT like they actually did. I'd like to go into a territory and bang it up for some resources, or just battle someone randomly in a lobby, or bring my team into battle in a territory and be brought up against random mercs who aren't actual allies, but can unify to battle us.
The biggest issue I see was that if you weren't in a team, you literally couldn't interact online, if you joined a team which wound up dead or inactive, you were shit out of luck in terms of large-scale multiplayer games, and if you were a detriment to the team, nobody wanted you to stay, so there was little motive to keep pressing on through online. Not to mention that cool little features like pseudo-customization of your own personal territory almost never mattered because random assholes could never actually engage you in combat. It had to be someone who has identified you specifically and the team you're on.
The game needs a desperate overload of features that reward an individual player instead of punishing them for not interacting with a team. And while I do appreciate the team/faction elements greatly, there's nothing to motivate you to go online if you aren't adhering to them.

I've never done this mission with any of the builds the other anon suggested. I always did it with four sniper cannons (Two rifles if you want to be pedantic) and an AC stabilized and tuned for backpedaling faster than it can move forward. Just keep backin' up, ideally taking them on one at a time by luring them over the wall.

It's just a good, solid game. It refined the elements that initially came with AC3 while increasing the difficulty, and was just before the mess of new ideas that was Nexus. In the same vein, Last Raven was the last ultimate refinement of the Nexus system. That's not to say that SL did not have flawsMG800, but it was a stable and polished release.
Also there was that neat AI training feature where you could raise your very own robot son to fight alongside you in the Co-op Arena and I think multiplayer too. It is strange that the feature was dropped from future games.
Silent Line was also incidentally the first game for me in the series, I stumbled onto it by accident and never regretted getting into AC. From what I've played of AC3 I'm glad that I went into Silent Line first, sort of going straight to the deep end of the pool instead of starting out in the kiddie section.

Well again, I'm always skeptical because mech games and releases are too few. At least, the ones I've always enjoyed. I loved armored cores customization and being able to tune it however I liked, typically lighter and faster with a focus on higher energy efficiency with close quarters weapons. Well. In single player arena anyways. Single player is what I preferred, and the single player campaign and parting different acs for different missions. Some missions just called for heavier ACS or medium weight.
