I've slowed down on my garbage buying dramatically (Skip most bundles now except for ones with games I genuinely want, skipping most games that just look vaguely interesting, etc) but the two biggest tips I can provide regarding Steam obesity are this.
#1: If you know the name of whatever you're looking for, you don't even need to click in to the search box. Just click in the library listing and start typing. It'll move the selected game to whatever you're typing up.
#2: If you want to keep being fat, install and uninstall games wildly. Load up some random garbage you've never played, play for half an hour and see what you think. If you wanna keep going, great, if not uninstall and move to the next. Both broadens your vidya horizons and occasionally you bump in to gems.

It's not like when you meet a person at the store, you are there all the time and a conversation is only a couple of taps on the keyboard away. It's not like launching a game validates talking to someone. What actually happens is it sets you to offline in both the friends list and your profile. However, the times won't match up exactly, making it pretty obvious. This also happens when the servers restart every Tuesday though.
So for example if you go offline it might say Offline 1 min ago in your friends list but if they go to your profile it might say Offline 5 hours ago.

I guess when you get to know people well and help them with things and they help you, and things cool off you're left with this unsatisfied feeling like the other person owes you something.
