They fucked up. Everyone in Japan still wanted PSP and Western users wanted PS4 games, not PS2.5 games on the go with touch features. It took discontinuing the PSP in Japan to force those devs to the Vita. Even then those games aren't anywhere near pushing the Vita's capability.

Actually I've been trying to get hold of a Vita for about £50 (plus 32GB) on ebay.
Since I've got a ton of PS+ games, I'm planning on selling the card to get a 64GB.
As far as advertising, yes. SCEA made sure it stayed dead. They even went as far as to make sure the PSTV had no description on the box that said it could play physical Vita games.
As far as how it really is for a handheld, it's the perfect companion to the 3DS.

It's a dating sim/visual novel where you use the gyroscope and motion detection technology of the vita to simulate holding a camera and being a photographer in a high school. The game play revolves around taking pictures which the game grades. It has over 100 hours worth of dialog and content, you could easily spend 200 hours if you want to see every end/scene.

Last night I finally got PS1 isos working on my 3.36 Vita slim. I waited a whole fucking year for a PS1 loader to come to 3.36. I dropped the goddamn money to get away from SHITloader for PSP. Guess what? The compatibility is the same on a Vita. Gunbird and Rollcage Stage II won't boot. And the "emulator" on Vita is even worse because with this exploit, you can't access the emulator options directly from the home button.
So at the current moment, it was a complete waste. I do play Vita games too, but they weren't that great.

The great thing is the story is split into an "serious" love side, and a "goofy" ecchi side. So each girl gets unique two routes. Then on top of that even side character get full sized hidden routes. Like pic related. There's a really terriblememegoing around preaching that "PS1 emulation on PSP is perfect" and "POPSloader is perfect" but it isn't. The compatibility rate is anything but perfect. The game speed for certain games is anything but perfect, quite buggy and slow in some cases. In my first post I already posted two examples. Gunbird and Rollcage Stage II won't boot on Vita at all. Gunbird does boot on PSP but it will crash a few stages in. Rollcage Stage II won't boot at all on PSP. Doesn't matter much which POPS version you pick at the menu.
The only reason why people think POPS is "perfect" is because they don't play anything outside of emuparadise's top downloaded isos, or because they're playing the official ones from PSN which Sony specifically tweaked so they play adequately.
