At the moment I use an Xbone
I have about £3000 / $6000

Is this enough to build a good PC?

no you need at least 1 billion dollars.

That's easily 8-9 times over the budget to build a mid-high rig. Depending on your current setup you can reuse some of the parts you already have or sell others to get new components.

>>335813836
>Is building a PC really worth it?

Yes, if you enjoy using a computer for more than just gaming, it's nice to have a fast PC with knowing that you built yourself and can upgrade it as you please.

At the moment I use an Xbone
I have about £3000 / $6000

That's way more. I built my PC for 1,200 bucks and spent about $600 upgrading it last couple of months to have some higher-end specs. You can build a really good PC with $2,000. Just don't fall for memes and do your research onw hat parts are compatible with your computer. And make sure you read the names of products carefully and the company creators. You don't want to be like me and buy a shitty power supply unit from a shitty company that overheats in an hour of usage. And you don't want to buy a graphics card from some manufacturers even if they sell the same exact card model because they're set up differently. MSI is a pretty reliable GPU manufacturer. And make sure you don't accidentally order any mobile or laptop parts because it kills your hype for receiving the parts and getting your PC built when you have to wait a week to return and re-order your product.
>>
I think one of the biggest factors you need to consider beforehand is if you have time to play. If you're a normie like me who's got a pretty tiring job, a girlfriend, and other media you like to consume like TV, movies, etc., then you might want to reconsider. If you're confident you won't be browsing /v/ and watching Let's Plays or some shit, then go for it, OP.
>>
>>335814978

I hate pressing WASD to move my character around. It's so awkward. And they're slightly off-center, so it's even more awkward. It's playing games with something that was designed for typing, not gaming.
>>
how much will building a solid pc right now cost? one that can run new games pretty smoothly. any one have a guide with specific parts that go well together? I am not looking for top of the line but like one small step below?
>>
>>335814435
Good thing no Denuvo v3 games are worth playing.
>>
>>335815545
WASD is just like a d-pad. You just have to get used to it. Once you get used to mouse and kb, you start to hate using a controller for most games because it's more awkward. Only thing you'll really miss controllers for are fighting games, some platformers, and maybe a few third person games/rpgs.

Don't bother. I dropped $4,500 on mine.

Have 2 Titan X's because there's no point in gaming on pc if you're not going absolute max for the graphics, and let me tell you, SLI is fucked on all modern releases. I can only manage at most 45 fps at max 4k with Just Cause 3. And there are less and less graphically demanding multiplats coming out that I care about, so I essentially waisted my money. All the good indie games are on ps4, and all the best games this gen are on ps4.

I mean it's nice to play Witcher 3 4k 60fps, but regardless, ports have to maintain parity with consoles, so the Division still looks like shit on pc, but just marginally better than consoles. You're not instantly getting E3 graphics.

All I've been playing lately is Ridge Racer and Air Combat on my ps1 hooked up to my framemeister and Alienation, Klaus, Nioh, Guilty Gear Xrd, and Ratchet and Clank on ps4.

Same here, but I dropped $3,800 on mine with AMD similars. Crossfire is just as fucked as SLI is.

>>
>>335813836
If you have to ask its not for you. You have to want it to be a PC gamer. You have to burn for it, you have to hate consoles and desire more control of your games- whatever the things you want are.

If you are happy with a console and just want to build a PC so that you have "all the consoles" then prepare to have your butt devestated by one problem or another.

For me, I was sick of pop-in and games running on medium with no way to fix it. Rather than design games for the console, DEVs were pushing consoles harder than they could go. Blurry shadows, not enough AA, terrible frame rates etc.

I don't know about others but I don't play modern day AAA games. I've never played any Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, CoD, Gears of War, Halo, or Battlefield.

Gave up on Final Fantasy after 13, gave up on Star Ocean after 3, gave up on Tales of after Abyss.

All I do now is look for old games like treasure of the rudras.

Terrible case to work in. Why make more work for yourself when easy installation is worth the price?
You're skimping on the power supply, don't do that. It's the component that supplies and regulates power to your computer, don't mess with electricity.
You don't need a custom cooler since you're not overclocking. The Hyper 212s are also a bitch to install the first time.
Get an SSD just for the OS, 10 second boot time over 1 minute or 40 seconds any day.

I would rather have this.

It's amazing how you idiots still think it's 1999 where PCs are arcane to maintain and that you need to download a billion drivers and patches to play games that are too unstable. So instead they buy a console which has to deal with firmware updates and day one patches, but also pay online fees for multiplayer just so they can deal with error messages instead of blue screens

Of course you will claim they buy consoles for the exclusives, despite the fact that most console owners don't actually buy exclusives and just use their console as a Netflix machine that plays GTA/COD/FIFA/Minecraft etc. If they're really hardcore they'll buy a FOTM ubishot or EA action game like Asscreed.

You can buy prebuilds for retards just like consoles are. Only that you are not actively helping ruining video-games and got a free OS and can do everything imaginable software and hardware wise.

Consoles are dead and they should've died a decade ago, if it weren't for the insanely dumb masses.

But not for much longer. Yes, PC is the last bastion of true gaming and actually in the long term probably the cheapest option but the truth that no PCfag other than me will admit is that we, yess even the master race, are getting fucked. Hell the hardware industry must be furious.
>>
>>335819783
Hell, even the console kiddies on /v/ still think this. They all say consoles are better because they don't have to spend $2,000 on a magic box that gets sick with viruses and blue screens itself on fire or something

Its ridiculous how well marketers have convinced people that computers essentially run on magic that only super nerds can understand so that they don't stop buying prebuilts

Let's see here...I have about 75 games on Steam, and have played many of them. Plus a few games on Origin, a couple of Blizzard game and a few older games that I have retail disc copies of (e.g. System Shock 2). As far as I can remember, the only game that I had trouble launching and running due to drivers was the Enhanced Edition of the first Witcher. A quick driver update resolved that problem. I had to install fan patches (and did so without difficulty) for System Shock 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines to get them to run properly on Windows 7. Otherwise, for nearly every other game, I simply launched them and they ran just fine with default settings, which were usually set to "medium" or "high". The only reason I went into the settings is to see how much more I could squeeze out of the game while maintaining 60 FPS or close to it.

Look my underdeveloped little manlet, the thing is that PC's are a free platform. You can get what you want and what you can afford. That's the performance you get. It's democratic and in the sense of the free market. Some are enthusiasts and spend 500$ on a case alone, because they want to, and others are buying for their needs which may or may not differ from that.
Consoles are communistic by nature. Everyone gets the same shit you get served. Not more not less. The console industry tells you what you get and tells you how you get it and what OS and extra software you get and there is no way around it. So they have complete control over their customers, meanign you as a consumer. They got you by the balls and they squeeze as along and as hard as they want because they are in an entertainment medium which people WANT to have.
You cant just go and say "ok thats it I'm looking for another lifelong hobby" and they know it.
Face it kids they told you what you have to like since you were little and thats all you get and nothing more.

The industry at this point is irreversibly fucked. Unless the masses aren't allowed to dictate the market anymore, which in a democratic free market is simply not going to happen.
Ergo, we're fucked.

>people think building a PC is "expensive"
>really the cost is all in the fucking video card

you could cheap out on everything except the power supply and still game at ultra as long as you spend 400$ on a video card.
>>
>>335825350
The cost can go to a lot of things. GPU is the MAIN one, sure, especially since its what needs upgrading the most, but, either initially or later on, you can easily spend a lot on the monitor(s), the hard drives (yes you should have at least 3 for a good setup), the CPU for your initial build, and other bits, like a good mechanical keyboard, or good mouse, maybe a nice computer chair or desk. Speakers or headphones. All those things you wouldn't necessarily have unless you wanted to really dive into PC gaming.
>>
>>335825257
I am skeptical of that. I mean, it might drop by 100 bucks, maybe, but thats just a big maybe. GPUs tend to stay more static in price than you would expect, if you buy them new. Yeah, used get way cheaper, but new ones don't drop in price nearly as much as one would think.
>>
>>335823284

honestly a high end chair is probably a necessity, not a luxury and my back is paying for it.
>>
OP that's more than enough.

Wait a lil while for some high end shit to drop, build a good rig and buy:

>Civ 5
>Warband
>Risk of Rain

>>
>>335825907

>>
>>335825809
Don't forget about all the people who'll jump at the opportunity to get the latest and greatest shit just because it's new, regardless of whether they actually need it or not. I think there's gonna be a healthy influx of used 980s and 970s going for 3/4 or even half price.
>>
Is 1440p gaming worth it
>>
>>335825978
Really depends on your specific needs for the desk. My desk is both for my computer and gamebox storage so it had to be a bit fancier than JUST a desk, and it still only ran me about 90 bucks. My chair was on sale for 120 when I bought it and is very comfy. So I dunno, 200 bucks I guess? Less if you go really simple for the desk.
>>
>>335825978

Its pretty. Past that? Eh. Its a real resource hog, especially when using multiple monitors. Get read to pay out the nose to support it. Resolution is one of THE biggest resource hogs when it comes to graphical performance.
>>
>>335826184
Not really. If you have nothing and can get a 1440 monitor for cheap, go for it. But I'd recommend actually getting a bigass HDTV that does 1080p/60Hz and using that as a monitor. The difference in resolution is way smaller than the difference in screen size.

Are SSDs a /g/ meme or actually worth the premium over HDDs, that's the real question.

Yes. You pay for speed with SSDs, not storage. Keep your HDD for storage, SSD for boot drive and frequently used programs and games
You'll get faster boot times, and much more overall system responsiveness in the OS and in programs installed on it
Anyone who's used an SSD wil tell you they can't go back to not using them, and anyone who says they aren't worth it hasn't used one or is lying
You can Get 250gb ones now for like $80, so there's no reason not to have one
>>
>>335826462
The value of screen size is directly proportional to how far from the screen you are. You don't need a 60 inch monitor for something 3 feet in front of your face. Resolution gives you a better "experience" at all distances.

The only "meme" is people saying SSDs don't matter.

SSDs give a HUGE load time increase to everything. You honestly don't realize how much time you spend sitting around waiting for things to load until you get an SSD that makes everything practically instant. Its insane.

Not to mention, modern SSDs have an expected lifetime of decades, as opposed to MAYBE A DECADE from standard HDDs.

Not getting an SSD is shooting yourself in the foot.

I would only even consider not getting one if you are building your very first computer on a very small budget and need to cut every possible corner.

Get a nice, comfy couch, because chairs are for suckers, and put that bigass motherfucker on the other side of the room. It's like having a console, but better. SSDs aren't NEEDED, but when you have $6000 to spend on a PC, there's no harm in getting one.

It would be best for OP to get an SSD with like 256 or 500 GB and then get a big hard drive to store other things on. And also important for him to read up on optimizing his SSD and do it before he installs all his shit.

maybe if you already have all the peripherals like keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers/headphones, case & power supply. I'd say spend 200 on a graphics card, 150 on motherboard, 100 on ram, 150 on CPU and you'll have a decent computer

I've considered that sort of setup, but I haven't figured out a comfortable way to use a keyboard and mouse.

But surely there must be a point where common sense kicks in regardless of how little you know about a subject. I mean, 8 fucking grand for a laptop should sound like way too much to anyone who isn't a literal retard. I don't know shit about fishing boats, for example, but if someone told me to buy a new fishing boat for a million dollars, I'd think something is bullshit.

>Fucking retard logic.

Speak for yourself moron, they do two completely different things and there doesn't exist a viable alternative to graphic cards.

You need less than a third of that to build a PC. Jus get a memevidia 970, an i70 processor and a GB of ram

Literally WHAT? It was considered autismfest by 2005 standards

You can get away with 100 dollar motherboards.

Cars can cost 15k. Cars can cost 2 million. Rich people see expensive things and assume they are expensive for a good reason. Its the curse of not knowing any better.

Yeah and then if you want to upgrade later, you'll have to buy a new motherboard with more capabilities. I had to do it when I wanted to SLI with a new GPU I had gotten.

If you go on eBay, there's sometimes an auction on motherboards where you can get them cheaper. It's how I got my new extreme4 mobo.

The price of SSDs has gone down so much there's no point in not getting one.

For $150 you can get significantly faster load times.

The fuck you talking about? It runs perfectly.

Even with TRIM enabled, most SSDs lose half their write speed within a year. Crystal Disk your shit if you doubt it anon. I've got a few systems running various ones and all have the same result. From Samsung, Intel and Crucial, the read speed stays the same though. I guess it's nice for boot times and loading screens still tho.

As for cost... $6000 may sound insane but it's pretty easy to spend that if you're going all out on a full build and setup.

>4k gaming rig
Such as pic related ran me like $3400.

>Monitor(s)
Depends here, you've got choices.
>27" 1440p Gsync
$700-800
>34" Ultrawide 1440p 100hz Gsync
$1200
>27~32" 4k 60hz gsync
$600
>If multiple panels, you'll want mounting
>$350ish for good 3way arm mounts

Next up you've got sound.

>Decent DAC/AMP
$200-400
>Studio cans
$200-500

Or if you're going for solid speakers, I ended up getting yamaha HS8s which ran me $1000.

Desks can run you anywhere from 150->500+ easily. Then of course a good chair is a must which you should expect to spend $300-500 on. And lastly not sure how I forgot, peripherals. Good mouse, $50ish. Mechanical kbs run $75-100, a good desk mic isn't expensive at least.

So yeah, you can easily drop 6k USD on an entire setup once you're all said n done. I put about 8k USD into my own setup, no regrets.
