If there's just the host, sure, I'll be a little fair. And I can most often handle two. I cannot handle three, four or five people hammering R1 inside my ass for days.

That's what I did. Other people kept invading and every now and then a phantom would kill a Darkmoon boy which automatically gave me a forked tongue. I got 3 in about 30 minutes.

I got 10 with about an hour of PVP by just laying my invasion sign. A lot of that time was me accepting invasion signs as well, so it was more like 20-30 minutes.
Stop being trash. Be patient. Use the environment (lifts, enemies, shortcuts) to your advantage. Use white / dark ring and blend in when there's confusion. Isolate the host on a lift by switch baiting or rolling on top of it (easiest in the archives).

You need to pick spots that give you an overwhelming advantage on ambush if you want to get tongues quickly, ie catacombs bridge, all of the prison segments with jailers, and the poison swamp.
Shitty spots like undead settlement and upper lothric castle often guarantee a 4v1 against you rapidly.

I found out about this shit earlier today. Christ, I was planning on doing all of the achievements but having to go through a majority of the game to NG++ with bosses who can often times kill you in a single combo is a bit much.
It's really shitty. I know achievements/trophies don't matter at all, but expecting players to do that much just to get the stupid thing is insane. You have to do the covenant shit anyway but then go to NG++.

Gank squads are not nearly as difficult as they are made out to be 90% of the time. They are typically made up of overconfident players with low to midrange skill. Most /v/ invaders appear to be impatient children who rush in and try to get the host as fast as possible intead of using any strategy.

I should also mention shades/ghosts that you've probably seen by now if you're playing online. Those are just imprints left by other players in the area, and can't be interacted with. Yeah definitely this. Organised gank squads still aren't fun to deal with if you play by their rules. So if you see them either turtling around the bonfire, or some fucker is luring you to be ganked, then go and do something else.
If they use a giant seed, then make your way further into the level and just use a white branch.
Wait for backup, abuse lifts, lure monsters to them. Fire arrows at them with the greatbow if they cross a bridge.
1vs1 is fun as well, and should be treated like a duel. 1vs4 should be treated like you're running sens funhouse.

Its not as bad as you think for you because you didn't choose Carthus' Chalice Dungeons where the host can hide in the boss room and you won't be sent home.
I never felt so bad invading in a souls game as I did in Dark Souls 3. I will never respect a sunlight warrior ever again. If I ever meet solaire its kill on sight. If a host is solo no more gestures, kill on sight because 90 percent of the time they hit and run summon signs until there are 3 of them. Even the game sometimes stops their abuse with summoning fails but ultimately the system works against the red and purple covenants.

The way I play is that I finish and area constantly embered with dried fingers active. Solo obviously. Then I try to complete the area normally. Fuck pre battle emotes though, I'll wait for yours to be finished, but don't expect me to fucking bow or do other gay shit. If you're fucking about I'll just shoot you with an arrow or rush you.
Once I clear an area and the boss I go invading others until I'm bored.

Invade in the Smouldering Lake and let the ballista and giant worm do the work for you. Took me two hours to get 30 pale tongues and 30 mound maker bones.

There are two dark knights you can farm for tongues outside of the abyss watchers. If you have the mimic helmet, the crystal sages rapier or the gold Coventry serpent ring it makes it very easy to farm.

You don't need all that attunement you used to, though. The most a spell takes is 2 slots, and those slots they fill don't include uses for each, they all take out of the same FP pool.
I've got a level 80 magic user, and they have 17 vigor, 30 attunement, 10 endurance, 8 vitality, 12 strength, 10 dexterity, 60 intelligence, 15 faith, and 7 luck.
10 more levels in Vigor hits the softcap, 20 more levels in Vitality hits the softcap, and that leaves 10 left over for probably endurance or attunement just as a dump stat. Swap 20 Int over to Faith if I want pyromancy/dark magic instead even.

I fucking suck at pvp and i got 12 tongues within an hour and a half. I won maybe 1/4th of invasions. What kind of build are you using? When you see 2-3 people are you just charging in? Bait them out, have patience. Also, where arevyou invading? I recommend Grad Cathedral, there are a lot of long range enemies for cover and a lot of lesser traps to use to your advantage. I also reccommend using a rapier or spear for solo duels, and an UGS or anything with wide swings for groups. Twin weapons or weapons with spin slash weapon skills are amazing for both solo duels and ganks.
Protip: if a blueberry shows up, target them above all else, they give you two tongues.

Upgrades count as marks on your character account. It doesn't matter what you do with the weapon.
You can store it, leave it, sell it - nothing matters, the mark is there.
I recommend to keep your normal weapons to +4, twinkling to +2 and +2 for boss soul weapons as well.
The scale goes +2 -2 more or less.
Meaning, if you have a +2 weapon, you can pair with +0 upgraded weapon players. As soon as you go +3, you can not pair with +0, only +1 and up.
Special weapons count differently, since they go only to +5. Meaning a +1 special is the same as +2 normal.
Also, if that wasn't enough, they also mark how many upgraded weapons you have total. Someone upgraded a bunch of weapons to +3 and it fucked the entire matchmaking for him. So pick a weapon or two you like and stick to around +2 - +4 (special)

DaS3 people doesn't even necessarily play through with their friends. It's easy to spot when a ganksquad is actually organized, but not the common place scenario. They just begin popping phantoms out of the ground like they're fucking mushrooms and have them clear the game in their stead. How is that even remotely fun?
Even worse, do the summoned phantoms have no sense of fucking dignity? I've had people summon me in Drangleic castle's first bonfire in 2, have me deal with dark spirits, then crystal'd me back home when I was done saving their sorry ass. PvP in this game feels pretty bad.
It's practically impossible to punish anyone for anything, besides parrying, which punishes people for attacking at all and can result in an instant OHKO.

Right now the easiest way to get tongues is get Soul Stream on a max-int hero and just snipe the hosts of Fight Clubs using the Obscuring Ring.
