I think what they're trying to do with it is make the game a little tougher by putting your choices onto you again rather than giving you more than enough choices to do absolutely everything in your team. don't forget EO4 not only had subclassing but three different healers, and it's widely considered the easiest of the EO games.

Instant death isn't damage though, it's considered a status ailment in game. Knives and staves typically do less damage with attacks but like in EO4, were used by ailment landers (i.e. nightseekers, although they could put out quite a bit of physical damage if offensively invested)

No no, I mean like Miasma Weapon is a Sidebar effect that works for the time it takes a buff to tick down, usually 3-5 turns. It doesn't go in the buff or debuff slot so you can't overwrite it with other skills or Ad Nihilo it away.
They did that because you can overwrite buffs and debuffs, and if the Cooldown or the Circles could get overwritten the class would be useless. Or violently overpowered in the case of the Imperial. Just slap an ailment recovery item on them by a slower class and watch them shit out 60k damage in three turns over and over again.

I'm postgame in EO3; two dragons down (Fire and Thunder I think?) how flexible can I be with my team? I'm using some blatantly suboptimal classes/subclasses and I remember that EO1 was more or less impossible without a Troubadour.

Hound and Cestus are the two bind masters.
Hound summons a pet falcon or bird (you can actually have both and you get to name both) and does binds with their bow attacks. their specialties are Binds and Petmaster.
Cestus is a berserker style melee attacker who uses attacks like Arm Break and Leg Break to do binds and does extra damage to bound enemies. Their other specialty is their high HP pool which they use to activate attacks, and have a multitude of attacks running off them losing HP as well.

EOU2 War Magus is just the vanilla EO2 War Magus without needing specific ailments for their cuts.
Herbalist trades the staff skills that the Medic family had for ailments and debuffs is which is a lot less samey than say Monks in 3 just being medics with fist flavor bash attacks.

I've been playing bravely second. I think the story is okay but the forced puns and necessity to try and make most scenes "funny" even the serious ones kinda kills it. The main characters all suck. The backstory and lore tidbits you get from the journal are super interesting though and the plot twists are nice.

Binds aren't be-all end-all, really.
I went through IV without a Sniper or Arcanist and did fine, even if I missed a couple of conditionals.
Plus, with Reaper and Masurao having their grindan skills, you no longer have any reason to not have backup character. In fact, I believe this is what the devs are intending with those skills, the class specializations and the subclass nix.

I really want to get a rogue-like for 3DS, and I'll probably get one of the Etrian Odyssey games or Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon.
I want a game with lots of strategic depth. I love Fire Emblem Conquest, and how there's no grinding so you really have to plan and carefully consider each move. I'd prefer a game with as little grinding as possible. I want to progress through the game using strategy, not just brute force.
I'd also prefer real consequences for death. I read that in Etrian Mystery Dungeon, you're barely punished for dying, which is a turn off to me. I played with permadeath in FE Conquest, so if there was rogue-like where you could actually lose characters on the 3DS, I'd totally play that.
I'd also prefer a game with lots of different abilities, that actually do different things and aren't just doing damage in different ways. I love the puzzly feeling of finding clever tricks and combos with abilities. The EO games look pretty good for this, but even then I'd have no idea which to get, because there're so many.
