The leveling experience is one of the better ones out there, and the jumping puzzles are great. The problem is, both of those are essentially single player experiences.

People hated desert borderlands because there was no good places to fight en masse, most of it had really gimmicky shit such as the lava pools or other bonuses, which is why most players stuck to eternal battlegrounds since it has large open fields for zerg fights.you're also assuming a large portion of the wvw playerbase hasnt just up and left at the same time.

The original DB release was so bad it failed to bring people back. And the people who were left flocked mostly to EB and while they wait for access to eb they might afk in the desert borderland and see if something is happening. So they ended up with a multiplayer map without players. At that point it doesn't matter how the map even is. If no one is playing of course it won't be any fun.
Right now though you've got some minor changes to the map, you've got new blood checking the reward tracks, maybe old blood coming back to check things out and the multi server beta thing going on. Plus stability changes. You can't really judge the map changes yet though until the new patch shine wears off and see if people actually continue to stay and play. My take on it at least.
Best thing would be of course they continue improving DB and bring back more polished Alpine back into the rotation. And the fabled big WvW update too. Whatever it is even at this point.I spent way too much time on this post.

For anyone that plays XIV it is entirely obvious that your second point is accurate though, the drop in quality between 2.0 and 3.0+ is incredible. Clearly that was just to trick people into investing before they pulled the rug out from under the game, though. Personally, I like playing a thief in pve, wvw, and pvp but I honestly think mesmers are the best class to main. There is no reason to pick a class to main for structured pvp so it really comes down to wvw and pve gameplay. All classes can perform decently in wvw and pve in some way or another. The hardest parts of the game comes from jumping puzzles where a mesmer's portal becomes paramount. A necromancer's spectral walk can be a better "OH SHIT" button in certain situations but portal is generally a better checkpoint skill.

I have a hard time eating that bullet as I'm a one server man till the end, but maybe it's true. If the system had been somehow overhauled back when the megaservers were introduced maybe things could have been different. But the overhaul/merging should have somehow allowed players to retain their server pride in a new form one way or another then maybe it could have been acceptable.
The real problem for WvW has always been since the launch though that Anet never had any clear vision for it. Combine that with the fact that they didn't play or have someone play WvW real hardcore for them and give feedback. They didn't know what the players wanted and didn't really know where to develop WvW towards. That is the impression I got during my playtime at least.

I mean, it is pretty shit.
It's honestly great for the first 10 or so hours that you're playing it. The combat system and exploration awards are pretty good for getting you initially interested, and the personal story at least feels personal. I got into a groove of clearing a map 100% everyday, then I'd go do something else, and I enjoyed it for a while.
And then once I got to around 57 or so, I just got so terribly bored with it that after one map clearing session and a couple of dungeon runs, I just stopped playing.

To start with i played for few months GW1, so im not it seems that kind of veteran that is bitter.
I enjoy GW2, both pvp and how everyone has same gear/chance no bullshit like in wow and other pvp with pve trinkets and bullshit, and pve is fun to explore and screw around, as well as to collect cool looking armors.
For a game that is buy to play, they update it quite regularly and is not pay to win at all, and enjoyable experience with friends from time to time.

This also the game looks fugly and runs like crap. The only good thing I can say about FF14 is that with the DX11 stuff, it looks amazing and I have no trouble holding 120fps at max settings. GW2 however, nothing is happening and I barely get 60. Something is fucked up with that game engine. It also looks really blurry and everything is just really generic looking. Its literally impossible to make decent looking characters and the armors are all really terrible. Overdesigned, overstylised and all that shit. Basically, people would buy karma weapons for dirt cheap and throw them into the mystic forge a few hundred times to get precursors which are pretty much the most expensive things in the game.
They ended up unbanning everyone and asking them to delete the precursors, which no one did obviously because people are just asking to get banned.

I'll be honest, I was quite hyped for it's release, and the thing I liked most was having your own biography. Having your character creation choices influence the story that was being told, and even get more choices and branching paths from there.
Typing it out, I fully realise that was never gonna happen, but man, if Anet did one thing right with GW2, it's that they knew how to fucking sell it.
GW1 PvP was a lot more skill based

The expansion was the final nail in the coffin. I quit playing the game when they took our excess skill points from us and gave some shitty currency in return. Surprise, surprise, the new elite specs cost like 400 skill points in the expansion.
