>We are still learning more about the event, but here is what we know about the portion that takes place in the city so far:
>Players in Stormwind or Orgrimmar will randomly hear whispers offering them untold power for their services.
>Players then have 5 abilities and 9 stacks of Frail Mind.
>Turn Ally - Impart Dark Whispers into the mind of an ally after 10 sec. Using this ability will out you as an ally of the Legion for 15 sec. Removes one stack of Frail Mind.
>When you are visible as an ally of the Legion, the guards will attack you.
>Cloak of Darkness - Vanish into the darkness for 20 sec.
>Hysteria - Cause hysteria in a group of targets, making them fight with allies for 10 sec. Using this ability will out you as an ally of the Legion for 15 sec. Does not affect targets that have been recently marked.
>Illusionary Guise - Take on the guise of a target. This includes most NPCs, even High Overlord Saurfang.
>Once all 9 stacks of Frail Mind are removed, you can use Give In To Darkness and become a Dreadlord for a minute!
>Unfortunately it looks like the event will be easy to opt out of, as you can right click to cancel the whispers.

From a creative standpoint, this is actually better.
Any time a character is faced with and chooses to resist temptation, it is always more interesting than simply being immune to it because. The struggle and triumph is what gives a character depth.
So in this instance, you are actually arguing in favor of lazy writing by saying "These guys are immune to any temptation because they are awesome and amazing."

Your characters are not world striding gods or paragons of purity - they're random shitters who'll do anything if you pay them. The actually powerful characters are guys like Tirion Fordring.

It's not like Cairne was ever particularly active. It's been all about Green Moses and the Queen Bitch of the Universe since day one. Alliance only got Varian because Bolvar was literally who up until WotLK and they needed a hot head to keep the faction conflict going.
That said, Varian has always been a key plot element except during BC. His absence was a big plot driver during vanilla, and the kings of Stormwind have always been a central figure in Warcraft Lore. Usually their death, given the Great Grandpappy King Wrynn died the day the Orcs showed up, Grandpappy King Llane died during the first war, and now Varian dies at the onset of the latest Legion invasion. You would think Anduin would start sweating bullets about meeting a grisly death at the hands of more alien invaders.

The original yes, but the setting has changed alot in the last two decades. We now have multiple races and the human wank is BS. The while alliance story of MoP was pretty much "Humans are better than everyone at everything".
And yeah its still a problem, if anything more so. Now blizz added all these new buildings for the sake of garrison that are going to get reused heavily, all but one of which is entirely human themed. The only other alliance race to really do anything in WoD were the dwarves: but only the unplayable ones (ongoing issue with alliance dating back to wotlk where high elves took a lot of focus), and kinda the draenei but not really since it was all the draenor draenei doing stuff, and they're staying on Draenor.

At least it makes sense in lore terms in the case of STO. You are a captain; you would have to deal with duty officers and away missions that run the gamut from replacing your supply of alcohol to ordering one of your chief security officers to oversee a diplomatic incident. STO also has whole quest chains and storylines built into this system. I mean, it's just text, but the flavour is nice. And it really is entirely optional.
In world of warcraft, your player character running a garrison is a nice idea but: it's a stretch to make it fit with the lore; the execution is terrible; it's retarded that it is practically mandatory in WoD. Firstly, you're a mercenary and even the best mercenary isn't going to be contracted by a sovereignty to oversee the establishment of a colony. Secondly, establishing garrisons in an alternate version of an alien world makes very little sense. The Alliance/Horde isn't looking to take over Draenor. They're looking to get in and out fast. Garrisons, if they had to be implemented, would have made a great deal more sense lorewise back in MoP. Finally, the flavour text is fucking terrible and repeats itself constantly. I get that people don't care about the lore anymore, but at least STO puts in the effort to actually make the follower mission descriptions varied and meaningful.
These new class halls just look like more of the same. Class halls are a fantastic idea, but they should have gotten rid of the follower system entirely and replaced it with class based storylines and henchmen of varying skill that you unlock and build up as you progress - maybe even an apprentice of some sort. You know, a sort of three way mix between GW henchmen system, SWTOR companions and FFXIV class storyline progression. That would have been a whole lot better than what is essentially shaping up to be farmville 2.0.The thing that really infuriates me about all this shit is that you just know it's going to be a mandatory part of the experience.

Lorewise, I have the same problem with them that I have with Garrisons. You're a wandering mercenary adventurer, in many cases there is very little to tie you to any of these class organizations. I really only see it working for paladins and death knights. Maybe druids, too. I guess monks, but the training grounds on the mountaintop was definitely more MoP themed.
I guess it's not 'your' class hall in the same way it was your garrison, but it still feels like it's adding some sort of unnecessary hierarchy.

Pre-wrath event was only started in the major cities and Booty Bay, for the first two days gave you 10 minutes to cure it (unless you died beforehand) and lasted no time at all because ghouls were easy as fuck to kill, and players still found ways to spread it everywhere before it ramped up.
We still don't even know if this will have a ramp-up to it like the WotLK event did, and people are ignoring the big thing of turning NPCs hostile on everyone.

Questing in MoP was largely shit: mechanically, it was the same theme park ride these expansions always are; from the perspective of anyone who has any love of storytelling or narrative design, it was saccharin tripe. The only reason people liked questing in MoP was because it had more cinematics and voice work than they were used to and, for once, you were actually downing unique looking mobs. The story itself was pure garbage that couldn't hold a candle to anything from the RTS or even Wrath (if you bothered to read the quest descriptions) and TBC (yes, Illidan was handled terribly but there were some great little threads along the way). MoP was generic, and I mean aggressively GENERIC, journey to the west, fu man chu, style bullshit. Sure - Blizzard has a reputation for tongue and cheek cliché humour, but most of this expansion was meant to be taken super seriously. It was so poorly done, if I was Chinese, I might actually have been racially offended. Fucking AoC handled the East Asian inspired setting far better, not to mention Factions.
I couldn't give less of a shit about the Mogu; none of the writing that dealt with their origins or motivations compelled me to see them as interesting antagonists.
The Isle of Thunder was a glorified daily time sink tarted up with a few storyline titbits.
Having a faction leader as the end boss was plain lazy. Turning him into a Saturday morning cartoon villain for the sake of needing a raid boss, when they had already spent a large portion of Cataclysm giving his character some semblance of depth, was really disappointing to see.

Yes, but Blizzard's story team has been objectively shit for at least three expansions now. I care about the lore in the same way that someone might care about a soap opera; you realize it's terrible, and it's unlikely to ever get better, but it's candy floss for the brain.
The sad thing is, warcraft wasn't always this bad when it came to storytelling. I mean, I was fairly young at the time, but I loved WCIII and FF for the stories and world building. The good will generated by that storytelling is part of what drew people to WoW in the first place. You didn't get much story in WoW, but they didn't shit on anything either, and you got to run around in a world you had been heavily invested in as a child. Up until just past Ulduar, the expansions didn't do an awful job of continuing the storyline either (bar that fiasco over Illidan). Orange not-lich king really signalled the beginning of the end for me. It was so feeble.
They really do need to change their writing team. Metzen may have been with the company since the beginning, but he can't spin a compelling yarn to save his life. As a writer, he has all the imagination and talent of an over-active four year old. I refuse to believe he had any serious hand in developing WCIII's and FF's storyline and dialogue.

I really hope they release the pre-patch sooner rather than later. I know they are always released about a month before expansion release but it be great if it came out after the movie. It would keep whatever idiots come back to the game after the movie till the expansion comes out.

You can like it in the same way that you might like trashy b movie shit, but it's impossible to say that the writing is still great and successfully back up that assertion. It does things that are so fundamentally wrong that, mechanically, the story as a whole can't possibly be considered good. No, I quit the month HFC was released, and I have no desire to repeatedly do the same content that may have an extra mechanic or two anymore. Did it for Wrath, Cata, MoP, and early WoD.
And no, I was in a top 10 US guild when our country was actually good at this game. I got everything when it was current.
