I've kind of lost all hope in Star Ocean after IV.
I'll check it out in a few years maybe, if I can get it for cheap.

I am, but I have yet to complete any of them. I got about halfway through First Departure and I just haven't had the time to go back and wrap it up. That being said, from everything I've experienced in all of the other games in the series I've tried, I really like it as a whole.
I think this game's existence is also Square demonstrating that they really are trying to go back to what made them good in the first place. They're one of the few companies that actually came out and had the balls to admit they fucked up.

There was a review from a guy who seems to know a lot about Star Ocean who said it's not BAD, just very mediocre and short. He showed how literally all of the animations from the main character are reused from Star Ocean 3 and 4 and that the whole thing is a clone of 3.
The idea of your whole party fighting in every battle is something that sounds good on paper but looks like a clusterfuck in the actual game.
Either way a 20-30 hour JRPG that can be 100%ed in 40-50 hours is pretty ridiculous in this day and age. I know taking place mostly on one planet is nothing new for SO but it looks more like budget problems in this one.

Not really. 1 and 2 are connected as the protagonist of 2 is the son of at least 1 character from Star Ocean 1, but even then all that tells you is who his father is and why he's famous. Star Ocean 3 takes place way later down the road from 2 and has no returning or related characters. Star Ocean 4 is a prequel to the entire series. There's a few callbacks to previous games from one entry to another, but besides that and general universe/setting stuff (planets, races, factions, technologies, etc.) every game is pretty self contained.

There's literally nothing wrong with that. The only reason most super long rpgs take so long to 100% is because of assloads of grinding. Even then most rpgs aren't that long to beat or 100%.

It really isn't. I've never had an issue telling what's going on, aside from a few fights where the camera is less than stellar, but that's not due to 7 active members.

You're not getting anywhere near 100% in 50 hours. At most, you'll be finishing 6-wing EQ for your first playthrough at that time. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the main story taking 20-30 hours to finish.

Me. It looks like it will go to shit later in the game but SO1-3 were all pretty great to me. Even though each one bogged down in one boring place way too fucking long. Even 4 had some charm despite being pretty shit.
I just want to travel more freely and have access to a really alien place early. Stop wasting my time with pretty much earth in medieval times for 40% of the damn game.
