Don't even start this OP. Both are good and realistically, a lot of people who like Souls, Onimusha, and action games in general will obviously be interested in Nioh as well. After playing the demo, Nioh is definitely more of it's own thing but some design choices do look inspired from Demons Souls. No FromSoft didn't invent everything they did in their games but the inspiration is pretty apparent.

Yeah but that's the problem. It's unnecessary micromanagement to filter out stuff you want to keep from all the garbage you loot and then having to offer the garbage. The loot feels kinda diablo-ish. I haven't tested it yet but if bosses would respawn that might even mean that you rerun the same levels to grind the bosses for loot and stuff. It just feels wierd in a game like this.

i'd argue that the builds will be more centered around weapon TYPE rather than the weapon itself. Then again there's also a familiarity rating on the weapon screen that never goes up int he demo, which makes me believe you can increase the power of something if you really like it. Though that's just a theory. Same with armor of course.
My logic is basically the more familiar you are with something, the better you are at it...so it stands to reason that it'd somehow increase damage. Alternatively it's just by weapon TYPE, so the more familiar you are with weapon types, the more skills you unlock.
I fucking love this game. The more I learn the easier and more fun it gets. At first I was dodging every attack and getting killed because I thought that even if I blocked I would get damaged but it turns out blocking is like having a 100% physical dmg reduction shield from DaS.

Okay, you may be right about builds of certain weapon types. I actually forgot that was even a thing.
Hopefully the full game has more skills, though. You could easily get a decent amount of skills for all the weapon types by level 14. I found myself just using any type I got my hands on, and I didn't feel like one was better than any other because of skills I've unlocked.
As little magic choices as there are, I'm almost certain the full release will have more.

i'm talking phase 2 in the second go-around, after the balls are off, any time I try to get near him, front or back, to do some damage he IMMEDIATELY stops what he's doing mid-animation and does a turn-around swipe. Hits the full 360, and it's so fast that if you swing you'll be hit, can't block or backstep.

Like I said, it's not about it being hard, it's the swipe. If I go in living weapon, I can't charge up a triangle, he hits me out of the burst attack, which leaves me with regular attacks which he still hits me out of, and knocks down the time immensely.

They have various benefits if you look at them. Kato is pretty all purposes and helps your Ki. Isonade gives you radar and Health per kill if your spirit's high enough. The Hawk increases your drop rate chance and lowers evasion cost.
Raiken is like a more specific Kato.

First time I tried the demo it took me 2 hours to get to the second checkpoint. I started a new game today and I finished the first level with only 2 deaths. on one hand i agree, on the other i find that it's a refreshing take on it. when you're out of stamina, you're really out. and it makes it especially important to take care it doesn't run out. that and the fact that you can use ki pulse to get some back makes it all workable and well done imo. Gets easier because you learn more and more attacks for your weapon of choice. You start out without the ability to parry or force a gaurd break nor a way to enhance your weapon with a element.
The further you get the more levels you get the more skills your acquire and the better equipment you find. Though everything can still fuck you up easily if you are careless or come up against more than 2 people.
You can change between 3 styles and use 3 different weapons each of which have the 3 styles.
High, Middle, Low styles.
High is incredibly slow high damage high guard braking and far reaching attacks.
Middle is for Defensive play, counter attacks medium speed, damage, and guard break.
Low is Fast short ranged attacks that excel in you dipping and dodging between attacks to regain stamina. damage is piss weak, Nobody gets stunned with the hits unless you have broken their guard but it doesn't break guard for shit.
The sword, Axe/Hammer, and Spear are your weapons. Each have their ups and downs. So far sword is the only way to go for Demons.
Hammer/Axe is too slow and doesn't output enough dps to be useful and the Spears don't deal enough damage. Groups are your spears best use and heavy armored dudes are your hammer's territory.
You also get Items like ninja stars and magic enhancement but really they are all situation and aren't much of a focus unless you are maining them entirely.

The heavier the hit the more Ki you chunk off of the Onis. They dont really 'regain' ki automatically and they will not stagger until you break that Ki bar.

It doesn't matter. Just use the katana high stance to practice the Ki regain. It's relatively quick and take a lot of stamina in one swing, so it is great for training. Plus, the concept will carry over between weapons so you still benefit.
And to clarify, I am not saying to use it on enemies. Just stand by a shrine and practice until you get it down.

Probably the overall feel of the game.
Instead of them spreading the design too thin on a million different possible weapon choices they only have the 3. The way enemies react to being hit and killed 'feels' different as well, they dont just insta ragdoll, they get gibbed and decapitated and chunked, your hits feel more visceral.
All the design choices are specific and much smaller in quantity then say Demon or dark souls which have to compensate for players having more overall choices. In Nioh they know "THE PLAYER CAN DO THIS OR THIS GUARANTEED. Lets do this to them and see how they deal with it." Where as in DaS/DeS it's "Are they a mage? A cleric? Heavy weapons or light weapons? Tanky shit head or dick ass thief?" they kind of have to throw a wide net for the gameplay.
Thats just my thoughts anyway.

Stonefang tunnel is crap and so is the swamp place. 1-2 is also incredibly annoying. Demon's only has a handful of good bosses (flamelurker, man eaters, tower knight, false king).Demon's has the worst upgrade system in the series. The world and character tendency system was idiotic and unintuitive. There was less overall weapons and armor than the later instalments. Demon's definitely has the most dreary atmosphere and unique music but that's probably the only things I can say in it's favour over the other games.

I got four elixirs every time I rested at the shrine by the time I beat the first boss but I'm not sure how the amount increased.
I get that you get temp elixirs from offering stuff to the shrine but do they permanently increase if you offer enough stuff?

I kinda agree. I love alot of the concepts, like stances, skills, but some of the basic design feels unsatisfying.
The Ki pulse system for example feels like it's almost a great idea but for the most part you using it means you were either done attacking or you need to back off, so it feels inconsequential.
Personally would like it more if it were faster charging and charges the whole time you attack, and switching stances or dodging were the only ways to make it recover rather than pressing R1. It'd encourage more offense but also make combat feel smoother because it doesn't outright force you to back off after only a few attacks reduces your ki to 0.

Regarding weapons, do I ignore the attack and focus on the stats or is the attack important? I'm picking up level 20 swords but they seem complete shit compared to my level 5 so I don't bother switching
I think Nioh is good as a Ninja Gaiden type game but it should NOT be compared to Souls. Souls obviously goes for a much more RPG style while Nioh is more DMC/NG.
Nioh's combat is great and it is quite difficult but I don't really see it beating Souls in level design, art design, or lore but the final product could well have better gameplay.

I don't see this at all. Especially DMC.
It has all the things that make souls souls. The ambushing enemies, amrita and the level ups being exactly the same, the oppressively lonely atmosphere, seeing other players' deaths, the emphasis on deaths for that matter and the difficulty as well, summoning players into your world, map design philosophy mostly being the same, I could keep going.
You can pick apart any of those things on their own as being in plenty of other things, but together it's the same formula as a Souls game.
