GC had an Ati GPU, and generally very "PC like" hardware for its time. It actually supported many shader effects (bumpmaps, specular, bloom...), unlike PS2 which had weird custom architecture and very basic and crude GPU.

The best comparison point would be RE4, which had plenty of cool visual tricks on GC, but thr later released PS2 port had to go through a major downgrade to even be playable.

That not to say there wouldn't have been great looking PS2 games; the Silent Hill titles for example still look very nice. Especially the characters, animation, and lighting.

FFXII on PS2 doesn't have this kind of water, it just has one texture for water, literally. And you can't interact with water or anything.
>>
>>335697120
GC was actually quite significantly stronger than PS2, and supported many technologies Sony's system lacked. GC was literally just a step or two weaker than the OG Xbox.
>>
>>335697042
>GC had an Ati GPU

No, it was an ArtX GPU re-branded as an ATi GPU due to a business acquisition.

>very "PC like" hardware for its time. It actually supported many shader effects

The shader effects supported by Flipper (the GPU) were not compatible or even functionally equivalent with any PC standard. It was proprietary.

>unlike PS2 which had weird custom architecture and very basic and crude GPU.

PS2's GPU does not have a weird architecture. It works through assembling 16 "simple" pixel pipelines in parallel and then blending the framebuffer pixels several times into a final "complete' pixel.

It's novel, but not exactly weird. In some respects it is more PC compatible than Gamecube.

>The best comparison point would be RE4, which had plenty of cool visual tricks on GC, but thr later released PS2 port had to go through a major downgrade to even be playable.

RE4 was a Gamecube exclusive until the end of its life. The producer of the game actually claimed he would decapitate himself if it ever went multiplatform. It is no surprise the PS2 version is inferior considering the crude and rushed porting process.

Most of the "cool tricks" in the Gamecube version of RE4 are from the GPU's proprietary shading model. The reason the PS2 (and the PC port) were completely missing lighting is because the shading model was alien to every other system.

I meant the level of detail on a lot of things, that is actually pretty crazy for a PS2.

As some people mentioned, GC had a better GPU than PS2, so it could work with more advanced techniques.

I was just pointing out that other older 3D games had pretty high details especially on texturing that would not be noticeable on native resolution

How come all the animals in this game have an AI? Even squirrels look back at you when you are just looking and flee from you when you get near. How did they do this?

Have other console games this old many animals with AI?

Squirrels and other animals even come in different colors and there are six completely different kind of fish.

I've always felt like people who shit on TP's character designs for being "ugly" are completely missing the point.
They seem to be under the impression that TP is supposed to be "realistic" when its art design is as bizarre and fantastic as any other entry of the series, just way, way more detailed.

Just saw this post while scrolling.

You have three options for getting into gamedev.

1. CS degree and win the lottery by getting a position, despite most of the ones posted on job boards being formalities before they do an internal hire.
2. CS degree and then 1-2 years as a QA engineer.
3. 2-5 years as a retarded tester, during which you show off your self-taught knowledge of programming enough to eventually get a QA engineer slot and then 1-2 more before you can move up from there.

If you pick 3, you better add another 2-3 years onto there because low-level testers are common as fuck and you can easily be out of work for months at a time between projects if you aren't working for a place that has multiple games in development at all times.

I don't care about your very own definition of dynamic day and night cycles. Even frogs. Wow. And as a wolf you can talk to them?

Shadow of the Colossus only has birds and lizards everywhere and gets more praise. Ehm, would someone explain this?

Or are all those screenshots fake?

Did someone Photoshop in the frog? Is the frog real?

Those are not random background animals to make environments believable like sprite trees in backgrounds.

Bump mapping or its better version, normal mapping only shows the bumps based on where light is coming from.

All modern PBR shit is is basically telling artists to not bake shadows and bumps into the color map, and having premade "metalness" definitions to make an object interact with lights properly.
