It's one thing to discover a super secret combination or trick to destroying enemies. But in SotN anyone with an IQ over 70 can figure out any one of the dozens of item combinations that break the game in half.

SOTN has better production values but i don't think there would be a SOTN without metroid, metroid isn't a complete walk into the park like SOTN and there is no inverted castle which i always thought was a dumb way to drag the game

It's not even a debate, Super Metroid. SoTN is fantastic but its a complete push over without even trying, the RPG stats are a nice addition but not when you can essentially beat the game blindfolded how easy it is. Great music though, and the atmosphere and designs are pretty nice in Castlevania as always though.

From someone who has recently played through them both for the first time I would have to say SotN.
Don't get me wrong they are both great games in every aspect. I just enjoyed everything about SotN more. To the point where I would call it one of my favorite games. And I only just played it last year.
There is also a difference of hardware, so maybe SotN benefits from that boost in other areas.
That being said, Super Metroid is a fantastic looking SNES game.
SotN was my first Castlevania. Where do I go from here? I was thinking the GBA ones or maybe SNES ones.

If you were to go anywhere next I'd honestly recommend Rondo of Blood as an uncommon answer for someone who just played SoTN (usually people would say to move onto the GBA and DS games because they are more similar). Its probably one of the best of the Classic Castlevania's and SoTN is a direct sequel to it, you'd notice how much was adapted and junk. I'd personally recommend getting it in English, its not hard to set up an emulator for it, or you can unlock it in the remake for PSP (which I don't think is the best of remakes to be honest), original game if you can.

Treat classic castlevania and metroidvania castlevania as different franchises. Play Castlevania 1 first, as it's the first game and it also happens to be the best game. then 3 (Use an english patched jap version, US ver is trash), then Rondo of Blood (Not the SNES version, original was on MSX I think? The PSP remake is also acceptable)
For metroidvanias I would advise playing Aria of Sorrow first, then it's sequel, and then you can play whatever. All of the GBA/DS titles are good in their own way. I'd advise playing some metroidvanias first

Just started playing Symphony of the Night the other day and loving it. Never grew up with either franchise and Lord of Shadow was the only thing remotely linked to either that I did play.
Will probably look at trying a classic Metroid next not sure which though.

Both great games but like other anons said it really comes down to what theme you like better. Super metroid does an amazing job at making you feel alone on an alien world while sotn is awesome to explore Dracula's castle with all the nice little graphical and environmental details, and all the different sections to explore in sotn feel better than SM imo. Love both of them pretty much evenly though.
