2) Look out for super niche games made on top ramen budget that do more than self-expression, as those will be the most creative and will be remembered in the future. Games such as La-mulana, Legend of Grimrock 2, etcetera.
3) Play older games that you missed out on.
4) Just don't give any money to the industry unless it's pandering to you.

I agree with the sentiment about fuelling the creation of niche games. One of my favorite studios ever, Frictional, although it only produces horror games, consistently pushes out well thought-out and polished games despite having a fairly low budget every time.
