Here's the problem with Nintendo ever since the Wii. As soon as they carved their own path and stopped being competitive on hardware with Sony and Microsoft, they've boxed themselves as a platform that they have to pretty much support themselves entirely.
They pulled this off with the Wii because they struck gold with doing the right place at the right time. But the Wii U was among one of Nintendo's biggest failures. They released hardware a generation behind Sony and Microsoft's offerings.
In order to get any kind of support from 3rd party developers they need to sell truckloads of consoles for them to care. But based on Nintendo's past and current decisions I seriously doubt they'll pull off another Wii. That's a once in a lifetime sort of thing.
So while chasing bleeding edge graphics and hardware is not the way to go, if they want to remove some of the insane pressure they have to support their consoles they can release hardware that is on par with their competitions hardware so it's not such a difficult business case for 3rd parties to consider supporting them.

The Wii U tech was horrible.
A 160 ALU GPU in 2016 crippled it. Thats fewer shader units than the 360 and PS3, were it not for the slightly more modern efficiency of the card it would have actually been weaker than the 7 year old consoles.
The CPU was 3 Wii CPU cores(which were overclocked GC cores) stuck together with a larger cache and an ability to share it between them.

Cool, my birthday is in March so I have an excuse to splurge on it.
Been buying Nintendo and PS platforms on launch since 7th gen, owned all of them in general. Only regret I've had was PS4 but that'll be getting a couple games this year and next year finally.
