I love gyro controls when used right.
For example, I played through the entirety of Resident Evil: Revelations on 3DS using the gyroscope to aim. It's so fast and precise when the proper settings are applied. It really works well for third-person shooters in general. Even using the bow and arrow in OoT.
However in Starfox Zero it actually breaks the game for me. And it's such a damn shame cause there is such a good game in that but it is hindered by shitty controls and gameplay mechanics.

Gyro is not perfect for sure, but it has a million times more feedback than analog sticks because it is relative to the speed of your own movements, just like the mouse.
Gyro is not better than a mouse, but it is more convenient as you don't need a surface, while still being vastly superior to aiming with sticks. It can also be combined with accelerometers or light tracking to provide "line of sight" style aiming (see House of the Dead 4 with a PS Move).
Gamepad gyro is much less prone to decentering (happens less and with less intensity) vs the MotionPlus or Move, but it still isn't perfect. We agree there.

It was a feature that kinda sounded cool. But the controller was ugly, underutilized and the hardware of the actual console outdated.
Nintendo went into the last console generation and shot themselves in the foot right out of the gate. I played this game a lot now and but I've gotten a hang of it, I thought at first the controls were fucking awful, mainly because I often had to recalibrate the gyro manually in a fast paced action game, but the alternate control option where it only turns gyro on if you shoot, it basically means it's automatically recalibrating the gyro once you stop shooting and it improved the whole game and controls for me, it's just much easier to figure out where your shots actually go
