but STALKER's gunplay IS somewhat realistic.

You got bullet physics that include travel time, bullet drop, ricocheting, etc. There's also a bunch of different weapons with different ammo-types, all with different ballistic characteristics (armor-penetration, wounding, flatness...). You can also slap accessories like scopes and suppressors on rifles, and weapons wear down with use, resulting misfires and stat drops. You also start bleeding from hits.

>somewhat realistic
>somewhat
I mean, a bunch of games are "somewhat" realistic compared to something like Counter-Strike, but Stalker still has a bunch of derpy shit like exaggerated conefire + expanding reticle, and the damage modeling is whack even on Master.

It has MORE mechanics than a simple hitscan model but I argue whether it actually makes the handling more realistic.
>>
CSGO has some of the realest feeling gunplay I've felt in a while. The recoil is heavy, and it's incredibly rewarding to control it. The accuracy of weapons was calculated through hours of testing real world weapons, and I can confirm after flying to the Ukraine to fire a real life fully automatic AK-47 and deagle, both with extended 30 round assault clips, that they work EXACTLY like it does in CS. The devs down at valve really put their all into the realism of gun combat, and it really shows!

If you love real gun combat, and you're not playing CS, you're literally a living oxymoron, ya moron!
>>
>>335631331
Vanilla STALKER is pretty shit. But there are mods that remove the conefire and add realistic damage values.

But you're wrong. STALKER's shooting mechanics are entirely arcade. They're good arcade mechanics, with the ability for weapons to deteriorate over time, to be upgraded, can be fitted with various attachments, etc. It doesn't account for:
>windage
>moisture
>ambient temperature
>weapon temperature
>weapon and sight ranging/zeroing
>ammunition grain (eg subsonic) + the associated noise differences
>addition weapon temp caused by suppressors
>etc

>>335632065

STALKER on Master difficulty is actually a brilliant simulation of gunplay - you get hit once or twice, and you're going down. The guns are accurate and devastating, where the way to win battles is planning and use of cover.
>>
>>335626953
Only true answer
Probably by a black gentleman
>>
>>335632843

You're forgetting that there are many things that don't translate well to a good game.

Being true-to-life is all well and good but you need to think about how it works and can be programmed as a game - accurately modeling every element of ballistics would be so much of a drain on an average processor that you'd never see more than 1 or 2 enemies on screen at once, due to the sheer amount of physics calculations going on simultaneously. This is why weapons engineering companies have banks of supercomputers to fully model their weapons in simulations.

What you actually want is a game that FEELS like it accurately models gunplay, not something that actually does it. True-to-life and feels-like-true-to-life are not actually the same thing.

ARMA 3 and STALKER (on Master) are your best bets. You'll not get closer than that for gunplay in the next ten years, I reckon.

Honestly they are about the same price. You can get cheap, stinky, steel cased Russian .308 for about $.45 or so a round, and it shots fine I suppose, I've yet to have problems with it.

With the way the G3 design treats the casing, you may as well use steel actually, the ejection beats the shit out of brass, so you won't be able to use it for much after.
>>
>>335638507

Unless you have a suppressor for a rifle, which are either hard to come by or just unavailable, a silenced pistol is a good, relatively lightweight way of making stealth kills unless you get in their face with the knife.

Unless in CoP you get the power armour mod for sprinting, and can take a silenced AR, assault shotgun, RPG, gauss and LMG like fucking rambo

it's because the higher the accuracy, the more evident the disconnect between action and consequence becomes.

aiming requires arm movement with the mouse. reloading is a button press. Doing a gorillion fucking operations with buttom presses feels superfluous.

also, realistic handling also disconnects you since that handling is so intrinsically defined by physical contact that you can't reproduce. VR games might mitigate this but it's still not fun to pretend-touch something. Something weightless cannot give you a sense of agency over a real object.

Because it's perfect as a service/duty pistol. It will work every fucking time. You can shoot it so much the goddamn guide rod melts away and it'll just keep on going without giving a single solitary fuck.

There are pistols I think are prettier, better made, more accurate, but there is none that I feel is actually superior. You can beat it in one area but it's still going to be the best.

Then they took this perfect pistol and made it in nearly every caliber known to man, in every size reasonable. It's pretty much the ONLY accessible 10mm pistol, it was pretty much the first decent .45 doublestack, etc.

>>335650294
Not quite. The "casing" is made of propellant. There is no casing or packaging it's just a solid block of propellant stuck to the bullet. It's not powder it's some sort of solid shit that does the same thing.

You all are frankly retarded if you think STALKER has great gunplay.

I've played well over 100 hours on SoC and CoP, beaten the game on Master difficulty. The gunplay is mediocre at best.

First of all, lets start with the functional shit.

Bullets often travel too slow velocity wise, and drop far quicker than they would in real life. Unless you've got ever present gravity anomaly doing this that no one speaks of, it's kinda shit.

Then you've got bullets that exit the barrel at impossible angles, the spread on shotguns in laughably wide compared to what they'd actually be like, even in the case of the sawed off.

As far as visual and sound elements, the guns are mirrored and the models do not look good, CS Source looks superior for the same shit 4 years before it's release. And the sounds are mediocre.

I know this is /v/ and a lot of you haven't shot actual guns or have just had the "Stalker has good gunplay" meme infect every synapse that you can't accept the fact it actually might not be that good, but if you compared STALKER a lot of other realistic or semi-realistic weapons, you'd see the gunplay isn't all it's hyped to be.

Especially comparing it to something like fucking ARMA, Squad, Project Reality, or ffs, even BF2-4 have it beat (more on the visual and sound than on mechanics for different reasons, but overall still beat.)

STALKER is a great game, a unique atmospheric wonder that saddens me that more people aren't familiar with it, but unless you're modding the living shit out of it, STALKER's gunplay objectively is mediocre at best.

7.62 High Calibre.
>>
>>335630567

It's somewhat realistic, about as realistic as Battlefield 2-4, which also have travel time, bullet drop, penetration, ect.

Weapons can have scopes and accessories.

And battlefield at least doesn't have any mirrored guns and actually uses the actual names, they sound way better, more responsive, the spread on weapons is more realistic, there's more variety of said weapons.

Battlefield's gunplay ultimately might edge out STALKER all things considered.

But I'd say for OP, just go with ARMA and be fucking done with it.

This has to be bait

I play csgo a lot and I like it but it is by far one of the least realistic shooters out there. Competitive shooters can't be realistic, if they were then aiming would be easy as shit. The core of go's gun play is that the guns are unrealistically inaccurate and gamey so you have to learn a skill. Real life guns are accurate as hell dude, it's just the recoil and lack of experience that you need to work past.

If done server side with a fairly powerful server rack with calculations being sent back to the client it could theoretically work. Now translating that over a network with as little latency as possible from a distance is the next issue.

Someone could sit down and hash this out, but I got an exam in the morning so for now it's something nice to think about.

No, the AKSU earned the nickname "Bitch" because it's unreliable. They wouldn't base their new rifles on a flawed design. The SR-3M is based on the ASVAL, it's literally a version that you can quickly switch to be used in a close quarters environment.

>>
>>335664605
well, russia switched from 7.62 to 5.45 for similar reasons, the rounds weigh less so you can carry more, and they have more reliable expansion/tumbling/fragmenting instead of just pinholing through someone. keep in mind that militaries use FMJ, which doesn't do crazy shit like some of the examples from >>335664469

>>335664782
it doesn't matter who switched to what - my original point is that war is more brutal now than it was in 10-15th c. or even ww1
but some people tend to claim it is somehow better now
>>
>>335664497
>I don't know anything
The more damaging the bullet, the greater the wound channel size. Bigger wound channels = greater tissue and organ damage. A small wound channel with small fragmentation is comparably preferable to suffer from rather than a large wound channel that causes a large cavity and big exit wound, which would cause more bleeding, trauma, pain, etc.
>>
>>335665072
i would say that war wa most brutal in WW1 and WW2, maybe WW2 was a bit worse with how involved the civilians got what with the bombings. war has gotten more efficient if anything, less deaths, more medicine, etc.

It doesn't actually feel like too much, just holding it. It's just cool materials, you can feel the roughness of most grips, and heavier than you'd expect if you haven't handled guns.

The real fun starts when you actually start manipulating it, at least for me. Actually loading up the magazine (which for first time shooters, might be a bit harder getting a full magazine loaded, especially the last 2 or 3 rounds) gives you a new perspective.

Actually racking the slide back, using the stop to keep it back, sliding the magazine, and brushing down the slide stop and feeling the slide spring forward gives a small rush. Depending on the gun, this is where you take off the safety, and are given one more final click before the weapon is hot.

Again, for first time shooters, the gun might seem surprisingly robust in how you manipulate it. First time I started shooting, it always seemed like everything needed a bit more strength than I thought. I sometimes thought something was wrong because I needed to put more elbow grease in there, and I loved guns always, so handling one for the first time, I was super ultra careful and conservative about it, always keeping it pointed downrange, and worried I'd accidentally somehow set it off and kill myself or others like a retard.

Anyway, you pull the trigger, you can feel it travel and then it fires.

It's loud, bright, and it's going to make you jump the first time, it'll surprise you, or at least, that's my experience. But it's a complete and total rush. 2nd shot, a little less jump, the aim is a bit better on that target only 10m away, by the time I'd shot off the last round in the magazine, I knew I was hooked and I'd be buying a gun and guns were going to be a long time passion in my life.

Whatever you feel about guns, I'd highly suggest at least taking a day to go to the range once and try out some guns and see for yourself. I think the fear around them is because people fear what they don't understand.

ARMA is shit because the community is shit and the game runs like shit. Well, the community isn't shit but the server admins tend to be completely fucking autistic and insufferable. You basically have to play on private servers but it's hard to meet people to play on private servers without playing on public ones. Especially now that the Arma thread on /vg/ is dead.

It's starting to become a pretty common thing to kill kids of gang members now. Soon just killing people in front of kids will be the good old days.

ARMA has a problem where the actual hardcore sim aspects of it pretty much kill off it having a significant player base.

ARMA caters to milsim groups and the like because those are the people who buy it because those are the people interested in it. You don't buy ARMA as a game you just want to get to shooting 10,000 people and just have non-stop brainless multiplayer action, people go to COD, CS, and Battlefield for that.

ARMA pretty much is too realistic for it's own good, but it's got a big loyal fanbase that is adamant about those very same qualities.

Hell, there was a lot of strife and conflict in the fanbase about ARMA 3 doing psudofuture warfare bullshit instead of sticking with modern conflicts and warfare. This also would explain why the most popular mods for ARMA 3 are things like RHS which just pull ARMA from 2030 or whatever back down to 2010-2015 era warfare.

ARMA 3 has public pubs where you can just get some deathmatch or king of the hill and the like, but that's never been a core thing it's driven behind like with BF or COD.

ARMA almost requires you to find groups that do co-op missions or rarely some PvP to get the full experience out of it, and it requires a lot more teamwork and cooperation that most gamers would never even consider.

Take a look at BF and the average game there. It's 64 people running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The objectives give a rough organization, but it's mostly to draw people into conflict areas for a team deathmatch with vehicles.

There's little actual teamwork or cooperation or organization, despite how much they try for it.

ARMA is pretty much the opposite, it's for that 2-3% of people who play BF and think "This could be a lot better if it was A) More realistic B)More strategic and tactical and C) Requires actual fucking cooperation.

And so, ARMA caters with that milsim for people who actually want simulator realism and not AAA 'realism' that satisfies the masses.

If you love real gun combat, and you're playing CS, you're just full pleb with disgusting taste. You haven't propably shoot or even held a real gun in your hands, because CS is nearly farthest you can go from "realistic".

Yeah, as usual the /v/irgins can't even distinguish between the two points, as seen in the later replies.

>I've played well over 100 hours on SoC and CoP, beaten the game on Master difficulty. The gunplay is mediocre at best.
Good for you.
I have put THOUSANDS of hours to each of the three games, with and without mods, and I say that even in vanilla, the gunplay is GOOD, and well thought out.

All that "B-but it's not like IRL!!!" shit does not matter, because it's designed and balanced for the gameplay. You seldom see more than couple hundred meters at once in the vanilla games, so to add feel of long-distance fighting + actual differences between guns, the ballistics are exaggerated a great deal.

The visual assets have nothing to do with the gameplay mechanical level realism people are trying to speak of. Just about every shooter used to mirror the guns just for the heck of it. STALKER at least has the benefit of having been in development since fucking 2000, and being a pure DX8 game until the very end of the dev-cycle.
The sounds are not any worse than in your typical shooter nowadays.

>using "objectively" in place of pure "subjective" matter
When will people learn?

Anyone would agree with your complaints, but I'd just like to interject that the exaggeration of bullet speed & drop-off is done for the player's benefit & for rule of cool. I enjoyed watching the bullets' trajectories rather than having them hit near-instantaneously, which is hardly different from hitscan, and also enjoyed having many opportunities to adjust aim for the extreme drop-offs.

In fact I've been looking for more games that give me such a sensation to no avail.

No, I did not.
>What games feature somewhat realistic guns.
STALKER does. Especially mechanically. Way more so than some CS and CoD games combined.

If you're only staring at graphics, as in getting stuck with the fact that the guns are mirrored, then you're just a hopeless case.

Arma 3 literally isn't a game, though, it's a simulation. Just because people play it like a game doesn't make it one.
>>
>>335663032
You're an idiot, bullets create gore and gore is something that should be part of a realistic shooting game. There's nothing realistic about ARMA's deaths.

>you shouldn't expect a realistic shooter to realistically depict people being shot

You apparently didn't follow the conversation.

Some guy was complaining about ARMA 3 in that he wasn't getting enough of a positive feedback from when he would shoot people because they'd just have a small movement and fall over.

He was complaining it wasn't satisfying to kill people. ARMA is more of a simulation, and I was pointing out how that person's got a retarded expectation of a realistic shooter having drastic and unrealistic reactions from people being shot.

My point was you SHOULD expect a realistic shooter to realistically depict how people react when they're shot, which isn't necessarily fun or entertaining.

>>335674598

I know they're not the best, but the G36 series looks great. Like I just think it's a great looking gun.
>>
>>335678210
You're implying shooting people in ARMA is realistic when it isn't. People are complaining that it isn't realistic. You just assume they want "hollywood" type of deaths when they say it looks like shit, which is a stupid assumption.
Trust me that many people would find it fun and entertaining if it depicted 100% true to life deaths.

>All that "B-but it's not like IRL!!!" shit does not matter, because it's designed and balanced for the gameplay.

DOOM was designed and balanced with gameplay in mind but I wouldn't say that it's got great gunplay, or at least, the sort of gunplay that really appeals to someone who likes guns.

I mean, TF2 is designed and balanced for gameplay, So fucking what. Those games don't deliver good 'gunplay'. By your standards, fucking Splatoon would probably qualify because it's balanced and designed for gameplay.

For really satisfying gunplay, which should go for a virtual recreation of real world weapons, it needs to have an intersection and encompass visual and audio fidelity, realistic projectile based ballistics and work with the quarks of those real world weapons.

The fact you admit you STALKER isn't particularly realistic and doesn't matter, proves that STALKER has some pretty faulty gunplay.
>>
>>335674475
>STALKER does. Especially mechanically.

No, not really, because of the fucking bullets coming out at ass angles, exaggerated ballistics, ect.

It's not strictly visual, but that matters as well to sell the illusion as well as the audio. You might as well start suggesting DOOM or something if you're looking at gunplay as just mechanics separated completely from the IRL equivalent weapons, then you could practically suggest any FPS that's got good weapons balance.
