To the average person,there are very few games that seem impressive in a Speedrun.Games with lots of shit going on in the background is fun to look at,but it's only fun for a short duration
BUT
If it's a game that YOU have played and understand very well what's going on without narration of some kind,then those games are the ones that one would find interesting enough to watch.
I love watching games like Megaman X and Super Metroid being run at SGDQ because those games were my childhood and watching someone play them as fast as fucking possible is great.But show that video to someone on the streets and they're instantly bored and uninterested.
Speedrunning only becomes interesting when there are enough individuals that have played the same game or are aware enough of the skill needed to play them at certain levels
KevinDDR was fucking Hype at SGDQ when he did the Tetris Grand Master Exhibition because EVERYONE knows Tetris.And everyone understands that the game speeds up as you progress,and to watch someone play it at his level is impressive no matter who you show it to.
Tetris is one of the few vidya that has such a wide audience,and thus is much easier to understand exactly what is going on.
But other games,especially RPG's that are full of nothing but frame perfect tricks to skip dungeons,chapters,areas,etc. are only interesting to their niche community.

No joke, speedrunning helped me become a more patient and focused person, which has in turned help me achieve more substantial things in life.
I'll always be interested in speedrunning. I'm not so much into it anymore, because we change as time goes on, but speedrunning is by far the most fun I've ever had playing video games and I doubt that will change any time soon.
