What I don't understand is that Heavy basically takes off DEX scaling and buffs STR scaling a nice amount, while Sharp Scaling barely does shit in the opposite direction.

Dark Sword is C/D at +10
Heavy +10 is A/-

Try using a Sharp Gem on an actual Dex weapon genius. The Dark Sword, with C scaling in strength, is clearly intended more for STR builds. Thus, using a Heavy Gem, which increases STR scaling, is much more beneficial.

The base damage is usually reduced only by 10 points. The scaling jump will more than make up for that. If you're using a dex build, with a dex weapon, there's seriously no reason not to use a sharp gem.

I've personally liked it as a 'stuck in a hallway' weapon since some of the spears can hit a wall behind you and deflect attacks while the estoc/rapier can just attack without worrying about hitting the wall or objects behind you.

I know you have to have Yuria in the shrine, invite Orbeck to the shrine and then she will ask you to kill him, however my issue is that I'm a sorcerer and I can't turn in scrolls anywhere else.
Can I get all the scrolls, buy all the spells, then kill him? Or does the quest line get cut off way before that? Can I turn in scrolls to Karla?

Straight swords are just all around good weapons. Typically have a diverse skill set, and the better ones like the Dark Sword have good range and surprisingly high damage for their weight and low requirements. They aren't necessarily the best, but they have no real weaknesses, unlike every other option.

Are there some good dex based weapons? I want to try playing a fast evasive character. My main fear is nonexistent poise damage and low damage per hit making every fight 95% dodging and 5% actually hitting shit and everything taking forever to kill.

Eh. I feel big weapons got shafted pretty bad. The best "dps" weapons are middle weapons like the Dark Sword. Big weapons don't stagger easily enough and don't have enough hyperpoise in general, and some don't even do much damage, to make up for their speed and high weight.

+9, not even heavy. It relies a lot more on prediction than other weapons, so you'll have to get used to baiting people into attacks more often. Also both your skill charge and your heavy attack charge can be position manually, so if you think you can predict where a person is going to roll, sometimes you can catch them out by just turning yourself mid charge. Also handy to use the knight slayer's ring, if only for complete shitting on turtles with your charge.

I play unlocked when I do the L1's which fucks with people parrying so they miss it alot.
You can also open with an R1 then go into an L1 combo.
Sometimes I'll do one L1, immediately backstep and parry and it gets them around 70% of the time.

The Cathedral Greatsword works fantastic with it because it's R2 is a long range thrust that has a bunch of armor frames.

Miracles need a boost too. I can understand them not wanting projectiles to replace melee combat, but come the fuck on. For the stat investment and finite use that the FP bar provides, there's no reason Lightning Spear should be doing Soul Arrow damage. It has objectively higher requirements, and should do the proportionate damage.

Solo pve definitely. But that's always been the case. If you're an invader though you can do lots of silly and fun things with magic. Dueling you're pretty fucked though but that's always been the case. PvP-wise the impotence of poise shifts the game away from havels + zwei or the like, which I think is good. Having a completely broken p oise system is pretty shit though too. Need something in between.

There's barely even any pure str or dex worth investing in. Which means investing the points into miracles or sorcery on the side is even less worth it.
It's really only worthwhile to invest the minimum faith or in required for the weapon you want, and pound out Str/Dex for the rest.

Bull fucking shit. I CREAMED the entirety of DS2 with every kind of caster build. Did the same in DS1 with magic and pyromancy. It was ezmode. At least Anri's and Hallow infused weapons tell you right away. Is the spell buff stat display just broken? The current estus allocation system beats the old system hands down. You have way more casts than previous and you have flexibility outside of stacking spell slots for the two or three casts you use. The damage in general is definitely lower - or the sweet level spot is higher. I don't know enough to be sure. Seem slike the DS1 SL50 scene is gone and replaced with SL70.

Its very easy to get a strong build at subSL100, unlike the older games. Soft caps seem to be a lot harder than they used to be for non caster builds, so you don't have much reason to go past 40 in strength and/or dex, or even go much above 30 in vigor, endurance and vitality.
I went to SL 100 just pumping dex the last 15 or so levels and getting 5 levels in endurance i didn't really need. I could have stopped at sL80 and not really even noticed. Maybe even SL75.
That kind of screws casters because they need min stats for a weapon, AND THEN 60 in a caster stat because INT and FAITH are the two stats that keep scaling to 60 for some reason AND enough vigor, vitality and endurance AND at least 30 attunement.
And I don't really agree with the new estus system being better. You don't "grow" your FP supply as effectively as you did in DS2. You are limited to 15 TOPS and that comes at the expense of healing yourself, which is a problem with how vulnerable spell casters are to begin with and how aggressive and mobile a lot of enemies and bosses are.
