Good gunplay

What constitutes "good gunplay"

sound design? No mouse acceleration? Smooth and uninterrupted shooting? What do you think?

Why throw away the first clip after one shot?
Why load it with your foot?

really depends on the game as far as I'm concerned.

In most cases, however, I'd say that "good gunplay" equals "enjoyable weapon mechanisms", as in handling of the weapons is so smooth and satisfying that you don't have much to complain.

If the weapons feel strong, as in actually inflict proper damage and drop enemies effectively, that's a good start. If the sound design and animations are well done as well, it just enhances the experience, bringing in some much needed weight. Couple these elements with pixel-accurate, non-floaty controls, and you got yourself a perfect deal.

Proper recoil that doesn't shake the whole screen but rather the arms of the playercharacter (Metro 2033 did that right, Redux and LL then fucked it all up).

Good animations (weapon parts moving, casings being ejected and being affected by gravity + obstacles)
This should also include small details like dropped mags which stay on the floor.

Good sound design.

Impact on the enemies (hit animations/ragdolls, bulletholes in body, blood on environment)
Ragdolls for already dead enemeis, grenades or point blank shotgun shots should tear off bodyparts.

Your crosshair moves moves exactly as you move your mouse. No smoothing. No accelleration or reverse accelleration. As little latency as possible. No angle snapping. Just pure tracking.

Many games fuck this up and feel sloppy and overly smoothed. Higher refresh rate and frames per second help your movement feel more "raw" as well as you are sampling and displaying movement at a higher frequency.
>>
>>335299348
AYO HOL UP
>>
>>335299657
I suppose it can do, yeah. The thing is in Arma, the movement in general feels really weighty and solid for realism, so the gunplay can end up feeling stiff as a result. Also you'll need a good machine, game is unoptimised as fuck.
>>
>>335299851
>No smoothing. No accelleration or reverse accelleration. As little latency as possible. No angle snapping.

Is there any actual reason they do this? I'm having difficulty wondering why any of this would improve gameplay.
>>
Do guns shoot bullets at supersonic speed?
>>
>>335299959
Shitty programmers.

Console focused development that doesn't give the proper care for its pc port.
>>
>>335297918

the enemy should react to being hit with bullets. sounds is a big part, i love hearing bullet impacts and good gun sounds in general. weapon variety and how accurate they are also play into all this
>>
>>335299971
most of them yes
some ammo are subsonnic for silenced weapons use but silenced aren't really slient they're just not deafening
>>
>>335298823
Why does he put the earmuffs on after the shot's already happened? If guns are so loud how come soldiers can do it without earmuffs?
>>
I have never played a game with worse gunplay than CSGO.
It's like they're trying to emulate the awful gunplay of goldsrc, except got it wrong and made it 10x worse.
>>
>>335299971
Yes, cartridges that do not break the sound barrier are also available and some calibers average ammunition do not in the first place unless you opt for hotter ammunition.

Subsonic ammunition is popular with people using suppressors because there is no supersonic crack
>>
>>335300169
>earmuffs

that's because it's not cold outside anymore
>>
>>335299971
A 9mm bullet goes around 1,100fps

Things like 5.56x45 do go supersonic.

Often when you're watching videos of people on the recieving end of fire, you can hear the sound of bullets cracking which sounds scary desu
>>
>>335300169
>If guns are so loud how come soldiers can do it without earmuffs?

Soldiers do use hearing protection and many of them suffer from tinnitus or go deaf from not wearing them constantly while shooting or using explosives.
>>
How long will it take to create armor that can withstand bullets . What's the problem right now? Why can't we make a master Chief yet.

and why don't helmets cover the neck and the face? they leave so much exposed
>>
>>335300178
It was pretty neat back in the day to have a game that was trying to be a little realistic
>>
>>335300125

Hush ammo + a decent can gets pretty close to hollywood quiet.

a bolt action .22lr subsonic with a good can is pretty much silent aside from the action

>How long will it take to create armor that can withstand bullets

The problem is that once you create something to stop a specific bullet somebody makes bullets to go through your armor.

What we have now is pretty decent and could probably be expanded upon but it's heavy and expensive.

But even the stuff we have now will get ripped through with some steel core 30-06 or incendiary ammunition

>>
>>335299657
What ruins it for me is how terrible it looks when you shoot someone. I guess it's not much of an issue from long distances though.
>>
>>335297918
i think pretty much everything is important. i prefer raw mouse aim without acceleration or smoothing. sound design is a big thing, the sounds of impact on different surfaces and hitting enemies need to be satisfying. i also find a lot of the time in games i'll prefer different weapons over others just because how they sound. hell, i even think the shape of a crosshair is important, and if it animates when you shoot and that sort of thing. i don't have a big preference on that but i've noticed that it can actually change the feeling of shooting a surprising amount.
this is mostly aesthetic stuff though, mechanically i find it hard to think of what kind of gunplay is good...

Max Payne 3.

Entry and exit wounds, albeit silly at times.

Enemies reacted to limb shots accordingly

Shooting someone's hands could make them drop their weapon

Enemies scaled nicely with the levels. You start off killing unarmored foes with weak 1 handed weapons and near the end only fight armored foes with 2 handed weapons and helmets, demanding absolute precision and headshots on harder difficulties

Mother ducking bullet time.

It's fantastic and I wish they put forth even half of its efforts in GTA5.

I wonder that all the time. Except the no enemies part. There should be a game that does both realistically.

Like realistic cars with realistic handling can be driven on realistic tracks/roads, there should be a game with realistic guns + realistic damage/gore.

The real answer is that there is no money in it.

most gun guys are not video game guys and I would assume the videogame industry is not full of gun guys.

The basic principles are, only very minor refinements have been made over the years. It's still a simple bullet, spun by rifling, propelled by a powder charge of the same magnitude of power that's been powering guns for ages. Yes there have been some changes to shape, coating, and cartageing ect, but there is simply not much room to innovate with the form factor of hand held weapons.

Compare that to the huge advances in large scale munitions where there is constant innovation because there is actually room to innovate and expand, not just physical room but room moneywise too.

Sound, animations and the feeling of impact are a big deal.

Insurgency has the best gunplay 2bh.
>>
Rifle rounds actually properly killing a target if hitting unarmored chest, any round killing with a headshot, proper ballistics (at least realistic travel and drop), proper recoil to make burst firing and single shot advantageous, proper sight picture with iron sights (aka not having a peep so small you can't see shit), proper ammunition management (magazines are actually a thing not just a magic ammo number you have that refills and comes out of your mags at will), proper modeling and usage of the firearms.

Just some examples.

I know you are trolling but I would like to address that picture,

First of all the need for a well regulated militia has nothing to do with the clearly outlined individual right to bear arms free from infringement.

secondly, "well-regulated" meant in good working order in that era.

so even if they were referring to the right to bear arms as part of the militia it would only be a militia in good working order not one regulated to death by the state.

if you read the federalist papers and realize one of the powderkeg incidents that started the war was british attempts at gun control you would easily surmise there was no intention at state control over gun ownership implied in the second amendment, you know aside from the glaringly obvious english that leftists so proudly shittily interpret at their fancy and then accuse those that can actually speak english of doing.

The same thing that makes all games great: Interactivity.

For all intents and purposes, in FPS games the gun is your way (often your only way) of influencing the world around you. So the abilities and limitations surrounding this make the gunplay meaningful. Just clicking and sending an instant deathray to the enemy is boring as fuck, but that's what the most basic FPS gun is.

After that, it all depends on the context of the game. Good gunplay in a realistic military shooter means comprehensive accuracy simulation, recoil that conforms to real life guns, proper sound, high lethality, etc. But in an arena shooter, you want a range of guns that do wildly different things and emphasise twitch shooting skills. Throw reloading and ironsights in there, and people will hate it.

Depends since everyone has different taste. Some people think CoD guns are good.

For myself personally, good gunplay requires a few things.

1) Time for alignment of sights, especially when transitioning from movement or from sustained full auto fire
2) Recoil, but the visual elements aren't simply animated it's actually part of the bullet spread
3) Great sound, those really high end cracks, pops, and other tinnitus causing lovely bits

Case in point, Rising Storm 2 and Escape from Tarkov have the best gunplay.

Those states are run by dumbasses that specifically ban "fiddy cal" because they have no concept of how firearms work or what a caliber even is and then act dumbfounded when the industry works around the ban by changing the diameter of the round from .50 to .49 and suddenly it's legal.
>>
>>335306474
If you ever do decide to SBR it, the ATF just passed some new rules that will make it easier to register as an individual and hopefully cut down on paperwork. No more CLEO signature. I'm waiting for that to take effect (June/July I think) before I SBR my .300 BLK AR and maybe put a suppressor on it.

>>335306018
I didn't say it was somehow the "Fault" of the handguns, but clearly by their design they are much better at being used for good and for ill, reform and regulations to limit the latter would obviously be good for everyone. Further just because it's "gangmembers shooting gangmembers" much of the time (I'll take your word on that), that doesn't mean that gangmenmbers don't also shoot law abiding citizens, nor does it invalidate that nearly all gun crime is using a handgun. Furthermore it's not often possible to simply "stop gangs from profiting", they don't have marked accounts that can be frozen, and goods that can be easily stopped from reaching market with some regulation. It's not a black and white world where one can simply just stop the root cause of the problem. In the end multifaceted approaches are always going to be required to solve real world problems. Police action is just a part of that ongoing and continued efforts to stop them, but making it harder for them to get weapons is another important step.

Finally just because there is not hugely significant death tolls by measurement against the total population, doesn't mean that if deaths can be prevented that they should not. All efforts should always be made by a governing body to protect the most fundamental right there is.

That's ridiculous, just because two cities banned them will clearly not produce the desired changes when one could just go a short jaunt into the next country and by them. Laws that enforce something like a ban or other restrictions must actually be global, and limiting, otherwise they clearly will have little deterrent power.

Also I didn't call for an outright ban, I called for some additional regulation and legal reform.

An accidental discharge can occasionally happen. Good thing he's in a range with his gun pointed towards the range.
No one actually got hurt except the guy's pride for screwing up once.
I'm guessing you have never seen a gun fire in real life or been to a range.
You act like you can get instant AIDS from even being near a gun.
Be realistic. You should try new things. Maybe a day at the range will at least make you see why people like to shoot guns.

Good gunplay is mainly about two things.

>1) Good weapon balance and function. Weapons in your arsenal should have their own use and remain viable throughout the game. Good example: Doom. All weapons have their own distinct use depending on circumstance.

>2) Satisfaction of using your weaponry. Your weapons should simple feel good when you blast them. Good example: FEAR

>but making it harder for them to get weapons is another important step.

The problem is that they steal most of their guns or have non criminals buy them which you cannot regulate.

You are NEVER going to have handgun bans in the US

>Finally just because there is not hugely significant death tolls by measurement against the total population, doesn't mean that if deaths can be prevented that they should not. All efforts should always be made by a governing body to protect the most fundamental right there is.

That's all well and good but we should not be trampling on all of our other rights for safety.

You can defund gangs by realizing why they profit.

Drugs, prostitution and illicit gambling are some of the biggest moneymakers for the illicit organization

ending the drug war, decriminalizing recreational use and legalizing prostitution would cripple these gangs financially.

criminal justice reform is required to put away violent criminals instead of revolving door policies we have now.

We don't need to overregulate firearms because we don't know how to stop criminals

Firearms are not the issue and tens of millions should not be barred form their rights due to the actions of a vast minority

I'm sorry anon, but without the right to life, no other rights can exist. It is tantamount that we protect it from malicious violations.

>ending the drug war, decriminalizing recreational use and legalizing prostitution would cripple these gangs financially.

One I very much doubt that would ever be able to get legally past most local governments, let alone past federal institutions.

Secondly that's basically encouraging a degenerate society that disregards basic morals and encourages hedonistic destruction of the body and the self. Would you really want to live in such a country even if it meant no gangs?

>criminal justice reform is required to put away violent criminals instead of revolving door policies we have now.
Agreed whole heartedly.

>We don't need to overregulate firearms because we don't know how to stop criminals
Perhaps not, but I personally wouldn't consider that some additional restraints on buying, selling, and harsher punishments for negligence or using guns in the commission of criminal acts is overregulating. At least not when one takes into account what may be saved by doing so.

>So you want to punish people if they have their guns stolen
Well in some cases where there was clearly a way to prevent it from happening. If you have your gun under your pillow with all the doors unlocked and you've told everyone about it, when it get's stolen and used to kill some little old asian shopkeer you should be held responsible to some degree for negligent behavior, even if it's just a fine.

>How about tax credits for gunsafes?
That's a fine idea. Though hopefully only actual reliable models, not the kind you can jimmy open with a screwdriver or a paper clip.

>The issue is that you are regulating how people handle their own property
It is just to make laws that regulate how one handles their property when it comes to issues of greater public safety. For the most part laws doing so have been found to be both constitutional and ethical.

>we already watch people that are suspected straw purchasers and repeat offenders do get caught.
While that's true, I'm quite sure better systems can be devised in this day and age of big data. Better prescreening and data sharing will make it harder to get away with.

>>335308592
Law creates incentive against criminal action. If we didn't have any laws do you think most people would be as well behaved as they are now? While it is true that the law will not ever stop any specific criminal from committing a criminal act, it may dissuade a large amount of potential criminals from committing that act.

What are some games (besides Insurgency) with satisfying assault/battle rifles?
>>
For me the heavier the character feels the better the more satisfying gun play usually is.

Quake for example has really feather feeling controls, you can jump far and move fast etc and because of that the guns you fire feel less realistic.

Metro 2033 on the other hand, it's cumbersome, reloading takes a while so you have to be careful not only with when you shoot but how much you shoot.

Both games are amazing but Metro feels way better in terms of gun play.

My favourite for best guns is Killzone 2 hands down.

We have compromise already. Adding regulations to an already regulated thing isn't "compromise", it's " restriction". Any my point is, the majority of people don't commit crimes because we have some sort of moral compass. Unlike criminals and Niggers. I carry a gun everywhere. I've never committed a crime outside of dodging bills and speeding. If I have to kill someone to defend me or my loved ones, so be it. I'm not going to be a victim, becuse MY safety and MY life are in MY hands alone.

The gun is absorbing some of the kinetic energy of the bullet firing, but not a ton. The amount of kick the gun gives when firing to the shooter is slightly less than what the bullet can deliver on impact. When you get past 5th grade physics, they'll teach you that.

There isn't just one "compromise" possible anon, it's not a state that is reached and then if anything changes, strayed from.

>majority of people don't commit crimes because we have some sort of moral compass
While it is true that a society does control through it's norms of behavior and culture, it is wrong to think that everyone has sufficient "moral compass" to always be good. There is a reason why societies that believed in a god who could punish their sins succeeds where as more primitive religions are the stuff of small tribes People have consistently shown that without rules and punishment for transgressions they will bend and break what is acceptable to get what they want. Now not to say without laws people would start murdering each other, but without some sort of structure to punish wrongdoers, wrongdoing will always be much more prevalent. It's simple rules of behavior anon.

>I've never committed a crime outside of dodging bills and speeding
And I'm sure if those weren't illegal you'd do them much more often, again the point isn't to assume everyone would go barbaric the minute laws are gone, but that laws, like locks, are there to keep honest people honest. And to hopefully give someone enough reason to think twice before doing something stupid and selfish.

>If I have to kill someone to defend me or my loved ones, so be it. I'm not going to be a victim, becuse MY safety and MY life are in MY hands alone.

With a pistol, it's pretty hard. You don't have the length of a rifle to put your iron sights on, so any tilting off center will just throw your aim off; and every little bit translates into feet downrange. Also, people generally don't realize their eyes need to be focusing on the front sight, not the target.

Then after that, how you pull the trigger is very important. Pull the wrong way and the motions of your hand will twist it, making all the aiming you did pointless. This problem still affects rifles, but not as badly since you have more points of contact with the rifle (stock, grip, barrel shroud) to keep it stable.

The reason they issue a rifle to soldiers is because it seriously is the easiest type of firearm to learn to shoot.

There needs to be:
- Distinct gunshot sounds; each shot should make a noise that's discernible from the next (unless the gun's RPM is insanely high, of course). Also, a lot of games have their gun shots really fuckin' quiet for some reason. What was that one guys description of gunshot sounds in CoD? Pebbles rattling around in a tin can? None of that.
- Recoil animation with weight.
- Reload animations with weight; they don't have to be fancy, they just need to be convincing and not completely boring.
- Realistic reactions to getting shot; you should only be able to outright kill someone by shooting them in a vital area (head, chest) and even if they're down they shouldn't always be instantly dead. If someone is taking cover and you shoot them 10 times in the foot, they should NEVER die unless you sit there for a couple minutes as they pass out. Basically, you should never feel like your enemies have health bars; just places that will wound them and places that will kill them.

- Controls; all the things everyone else already nailed in this thread.

- A huge variety of guns; one of the things I've enjoyed about Far Cry games is that there's usually two to three times as many guns than other shooter. Guns should also be viable throughout the game; the gun you start with is still going to kill a motherfucker at the end of the game. Tactical choices and playstyle preferences should decide the guns you use.

- Cover system; if you have lean keys, you don't need one. The only example of a cover system that works perfectly that I can think of is in Far Cry 4. It's completely fluid and unintrusive; you can't get stuck in cover and the controls don't randomly change when you're in cover. To blindfire you simply press your shoot button and you fire around the closest edge. If you want to peek out and aim, you hit your ironsight button. If you want to leave cover, you just step away from it like moving normally. None of this button that snaps you to cover bullshit.

Too jiggly. KF2 tried to be realistic but as it is with most devs they went to far and made it gimmicky. Sure the fore end of an AK wobbles around when it's shooting, but the sight isn't going to wobble on the rail, if there was room like that for play it wouldn't stay zeroed through a magazine.

If real sights did that much jiggling, they would never be zeroed.

the AK barrel doesn't do that though.

I used to take these tacticool training courses with my uncle run by one of his friends in the police department. Mostly focused around concealed carrying. Easy enough on a controlled course, but I know it's way different in an actual real scenario.
He kept trying to empathize that we get our skills down as much as possible. Something about you default to your training in a high pressure situation.

>Something about you default to your training in a high pressure situation.
Yeah, the point is to practice to the point where it becomes second nature. In a situation where your training would need to kick in, it should all be instinctual and you don't have to think about it too much. That is the theory behind it, at least.

It still makes me homicidally pissed off at GW that they haven't progressed the IoM even a little.

>BOLT RIFLES.
Select fire rifles (burst/semi -auto)

Bolt pistol calibre (since normal humans can use them )

Upnecked to bolter cartridge (since longer rifled barrel with proper stock etc. To hold and brace with means normal humans can use it )

Room for all the gadgets IG use

COUNTER-INTUITIVELY much less logistical loading on the munitorum since everything the guard fight dies to FAR less bolter fire than lasgunning.

2-3 shots at most vs. Multiple fucking lasgun power cells.

>suddenly IG regiments are the deadliest motherfuckers in space. Newton be damned.

I think that according to neo /v/ logic, reloading and shooting must be extremely difficult, you have to press the correct buttons in sequence or else the gun will explode and kill. All your experience points will be depleted and you will begun at the beginning of the level with all the enemies respawned.

then, we will see threads like "oh guys this gun is so hard and impossible check this webm how I died, lol fun, git gut"

It's fine in ArmA2, in ArmA3 they introduced a physx based ragdoll system and quadrupled the health you get. Enemies take comparatively ridiculous amounts of bullets to put down and the ragdolls look retarded, the models also flinch in a really exaggerated fashion every time they get hit.

The most satisfying thing about ArmA/Operation Flashpoint combat was seeing a little dot silhouetted against the horizon and making that dot disappear with a single trigger pull, you can't do that in ArmA3 any more.

This is from my limited experience with the game:

Very hard to do shit when you don't know map layout.
Very hard to do shit when people on the mic yell you to do shit.
First 20+ hours can't understand who shot me - being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now I just focus on the objective in those three maps that I managed to learn some layout. Fuck the individual score.

You either camp like pic related, or you go towards your objective. And not knowing map means you can just walk in-to a camping place of a sniper or in a whole lot of hostiles.
There is nothing tacticool sitting in a fucking corner or laying in one and waiting for someone to pop-in the doorway.
