We're in that time and age when the required hardware for RAM is making another leap
back in 2006 it was stupid to have more than 4gb of memory. /g/ lauded and laughed at people who bought 8gb at a time but after a while more and more games started using more than 2gb of memory as we effectively entered the x64 age which allowed people to effectively develop for more than 2gb of memory. This lead to the commonality that 8gb is the new norm.
Currently I believe the same thing is happening except instead of some adaptation because of new technology like 32 to 64-bit programing its largely because developers aren't optimizing and instead are just making games bigger without considering storage space or hardware limitations.
