BM hunter is god tier soloing but the first 9 levels will make you want to kill yourself because you have no pet
I'm in the exact same situation OP, just installed vanilla wow to play with by friend.
From what I gather Priest is good for healing. Shaman is good for windfury proc windfury damage. Hunter is good but not a sought after class in any way.
