Best of the PSX-era and after games. I personally would say it's the best of the entire franchise, but I can see the merit in giving that title to IV or VI though.

It's one of my favorite FFs. It has it's share of drawbacks (too many random encounters, magic restoration items limited, all battles in the final third ramping up way to high in difficulty), but they are easily overshadowed by the really enjoyable cast of characters, charming world, and strong dialogue.

Dragon Quest and FF1 for NES were my first RPG games as a young boy. FF games got more mature and evolve with me throughout my life. By 7, I couldn't imagine it getting better then 8 came out and I fucking loved it. It was the most mature themed game, looked amazing, had interesting characters and so much freedom it was astounding.
Naturally 9 came out and I ran off to get it. I was married by then and my wife was a huge FF fan too.
I found the characters in 9 to be immature and annoying. I found the story to be uninteresting for the most part. The lack of customization after 7 and 8 (and tactics) was a huge blow for me.
The downgraded shitty card game wasn't fun like Triple Triad was.
It just didn't keep up with the evolution of FF games that I was used to and expecting and to this day I really don't enjoy anything about the game. It's the only FF I haven't completed because I just don't give a shit about any aspect of it. It's not for me at all.
So, various factors at play, maybe you'll like it , maybe it'll be too immature and lack the customization and cool secrets and exploration from previous games if you've played them.

Funny, I found the tryhard edgy shit in FFVII-VIII more immature than the more subdued narrative of FFIX that despite its colorful setting and characters deals with some pretty heavy themes. I didn't care for the item skill system but it's basically like the esper system in ffVI but your equipment instead of magicite.
That sort of blows because if you want a skill but the weapon is bunk you still have to grind with it.
If you pick the certain proper weapons and what not early on you can make that easier, i'd suggest looking it up so it doesn't become a chore later.
The boss is boring and the hero is david bowie. Half the characters have no story but the other half have well thought out story lines and dialogue so it's a mixed bag.
The combat is standard turn based ATB and the summons in this game are amazing... but you don't get to use them for the first half.
It's worth the $15 as it was still before the darker days of 10-2 and onward.
The older games are still better ffVI is the best of them all. Play them too if you haven't.

As I said. I don't play that many of them(nor turn based games in general) so to me they aren't as easy.
Which begs the question, just how easier is VII to a seasoned played if I found it to be far to easy?
