I’ve been a big proponent of the Wii U over the past couple of years, arguing that despite its gamepad gimmick and lower horsepower, it still has many of this generation’s best exclusives. Mario Kart 8 remains one of my top five games of the current generation. Plenty of others on the Wii U justified my purchase of the system.
I still feel that the Wii U had a lot to offer, but with the NX on the horizon, the console has become less relevant than ever.
I had high hopes for Star Fox Zero, and wondered if perhaps it might help give Nintendo’s struggling console a much-needed boost before E3 and, presumably, some sort of NX announcement. I was wrong. This latest Star Fox is a complete disaster
That’s a huge shame. The original Star Fox was one of my favorite games as a kid. It was way too hard, like many older games, but the stress of the challenge was matched by the sheer joy of beating a level. It was a great game and it deserves a great modern-gen sequel. Star Fox Zero is not that game
It’s not just that the campaign is too short or that the graphics leave much to be desired, though both those things are true. The real culprit is the game’s hideous, unbearable, unplayable controls. The two-screen view plus motion controls make Star Fox Zero a complete nightmare to play. Not a nightmare in the sense of “really hard” like the wonderful-but-brutal Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. That game was hard, but it was a game you could still master
Star Fox Zero is simply not fun to play. It isn’t challenging in a good way. It isn’t fun to have to look back and forth between the gamepad and the screen, and nor is it necessary—a decision built around a gimmick rather than one that takes advantage of that gimmick. It’s not fun to aim with the gamepad while trying to steer and boost and dodge with the thumbsticks. It’s not simply a matter of getting better, either. You do get better. The controls simply never get any more fun or engaging to play

It's not the motion controls that make it bad, it's that you can't aim at anything on the TV so you have to look at the gamepad screen when shooting but can only see where you're going on the TV. It forces you to constantly have to watch both screens simultaneously and it frequently isn't doable.

From flight sim to arcade shooters, I feel like between the death of Rogue Squadron, Crimson Skies, and all the rest, it does feel like the genre's dead but it seems unfair.

It does blow dude. The Wii U had so much potential, and it has a ton of awesome games on it. Smash, Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2 and a ton more really cool games. It was simply that it came out at the wrong time, and it had the wrong mindset attached to it.
Nintendo didn't do much to actually reach out to developers and ask them what they wanted/needed in a console, and weren't going to change anything that would help developers take it more seriously.
I'd love to love the WiiU, and I do in some ways, but it is simply an inferior system, between the design, the cheaply made controller, the lack of games, and Nintendo not doing enough to actually help it.
It almost pisses me off that I bought one, only to have Nintendo slowly kill it, rather than just fix it.
I pre ordered it from Best Buy since I'll save $10 from the GCU membership, so it's not that huge of a loss if it's terrible.

What made Star Fox and Star Fox 64 so memorable was the fact that they were THE show stoppers in terms of graphics and tech for snes and 64.
Nintendo then fucked with it's flow by superimposing it own a completely different game and called starfox adventures. Then they outsourced starfox assault to a third party developer. Then they went against the franchise's core philosophy and made a game on DS. And lastly they have regulated the latest entry to a fucking bad control gimmicks that no one has like since inception.
Starfox is supposed to be Nintendo's one franchise where they can emphasize graphics over gameplay, where they can actually have voice acting and where the game can just be a simple shooter.
For some reason they have completely missed this fact and turned it into something else that no one wants.
