They are just not manufacturering any new consoles.
PlayStation has stopped a lot of production of the ps3 but not completely yet. Though they continued manufacturing ps2's for years after the ps3 release. I would expect them to do the same with ps3.

I think the 360 definitely was the better machine for game development and games in general. It might have been more powerful but it was hampered by it not having a low level API comparable to the PS3's LibGCM.
I had both the RROD and YLOD last gen but I only ever had to pay out of pocket to fix the YLOD. Both of my RRODs were fixed under warranty.

The early years of Xbox Live on The Xbox 360 were great. My first multiplayer game was Gears of War 1 and I had such a blast playing it and shit-talking people with my squeaky voice. Back when I had a reason to own a microphone, because back then people spoke often, and multiplayer games were not void verbal speak.
Unlike now. Fuck Microsoft for adding the party system. It singlehandedly destroyed public communication in lobbies.

I think the reason these consoles keep consistently having smaller more homogenized libraries is, because of the rise of digital distribution, many games are being released on the PSN and thus being overlooked. Do you think Katamari Damacy would be released on physical in the US today? Probably not. It would probably be fighting an uphill battle from the depths of mediocre knock-offs to even be seen by consumers, like all PSN games do.

About the only thing I can say the 360 has over the PS3, I own both, is that if the battery/ies in the controller dies then they're a lot easier to replace.
If the battery in the PS3 controller dies and no longer holds a charge you have to either buy a whole new controller or open up the entire controller and do a bit of tinkering that, while pretty basic, is still more than you can ask of most people. Plus I don't think they'll ever stop making AA batteries while the batteries in the PS3 controller are unique and once the PS3 production ends you'll have to take your chances with third party batteries, assuming any company decides to keep on making them.
But the fact that a rechargeable battery and something to charge it with are sold separately from the 360 and controllers is complete bullshit.

I met my favorite Live friends on this game. It was the bees knees. My computer was an dysfunctional e-machine toaster, so this RTS felt revolutionary to me.

It's bad enough that they gave SFV cross platform functionality to help it since they didn't trust PC's community. MKX was dropped by the devs on PC. Several fightan are still exclusive to console and/or come hilariously late to PC.
And as for Dark Souls? It's not too bad.SOMETIMES.
Later in a Souls game's life, they become infested with hackers, trainers, and infinite health out the wazoo. It's absolute shit for players who enjoy the PvP functions a lot. DaS2 was a total nightmare later on.
