Solstheim.
>>

crossbows and overworld design, minus the settlements
>>
It was an improvement over Oblivion. Now if I wanted to be the best fucking swordsman in the realm, the way to do it was to actually put points in swords. That and they cured the uncanny valley problem it had too.

With those two and like a dozen sex mods it managed to be pretty decent.

Comfy as fuck, it literally feels like my own little world with caves, taverns, small villages and cities.
>>
>>334949758
Except they fucked the tail up. Not attached to the tailbone, animations were all shoddy.
>>
Huge and fun to explore. Don't even bother with missions, just walk around and enjoy it. Not that bad. Add some mods to fix shit like Ai and its a fine game.
>>
>>334948876
Dragonshouts were a nice feature

Aside from that I liked the (clumsy) killcams and that's about it.
>>
It was comfy. But now that i remember it, the good points I would list make it sound like just a walking simulator
>>

It sold well and is still discussed on cambodgian drawings gallery websites 5 years later. Those that hate it the most vehemently seems to always return to it.

>less NPCs

I give you that, wish Skyrim and Skaal village were more lively.

>Skyrim vanilla assets

Eh, nordic and dwarven ruins are the same as on the mainland, which kinda makes sense. (dungeons are much better designed btw)

Besides that, Skaal Village and Raven Rock had their own assets. Raven Rock had Redoran houses and urns instead of hay roof wooden houses and barrels.

>Bloodmoon II

Fort Frostmoth is in ruins, Raven Rock is a redoran settlement, there's just some werebears on the island, Solstheim is nothing like Bloodmoon's Solstheim.

It's all about Dunmer, Miraak and Hermaeus Mora now.

Everything.

Another wanderer, here to lick my father's boots.

>>
>>334948876
most of it was done right pretty much.
the game's stat and skill system could be more complex though and the narrative not as braindead, but hey, it's Bethesda, a company that produces dogshit for special needs normies.

music, atmosphere and general course of the game was pretty good though. I'm a huge fan of Cicero even though his backstory could have been more fleshed out.

all in all, much better than Oblivion. Oblivion was when TES became shallow.

>>
>>334948876

I liked the magic system of equipping spells to hands and being able to find spell books out in the world. It made it feel like magic was a form of weaponry as opposed to just being there to supplement your weapons.

But then they made it so you could buy every single spell from NPCs, made every spell only a minor variation of the previous one, gave them shit scaling, and then made all of the actually cool spells useless, or turned them into dragon shouts instead.
>>
>>334951041

Yes, but I doubt TES VI will beat Skyrim by the margin that Skyrim beat Oblivion.

>>
>>334948876
It was pretty fun to explore the first time and was really good at being a time sink. That's about it. Combat doesn't shine in any way, RPG elements are laughable, any "choice" is meaningless, there's not a lot visually impressive about it, and the setting or races or enemies never deviate from traditional fantasy. There's nothing you'd really find in Skyrim that you wouldn't find in a Tolkein book (with the exception of Khajiit and Argonians), which makes it ultimately bland in favor of being accessible to the normal crowd.
>>

That's half of the point I'm making, I wander into these threads every once in a while and the sort of content that made it into Skyrim is nothing compared to what sort of weird fucking shit Elder Scrolls has - like the time that the moon disappeared out of the sky and the Khajiit lost their collective minds over it, or the whole fucking CHIM thing. Hell, I even remember reading one of the in-game books about a type of northern vampire that hides under frozen lakes and can phase through ice to capture people - all really cool shit, and yet we got a really bland, really uninspired fantasy world, (at least for the game itself) where the most common enemy is either angry bandits or zombie Nords.
>>

Funny thing is, those are Volkihar vampires. You know, the ones you see in the Dawnguard DLC and are nothing like the ones in the book :^)

Explain how retracing your steps along an empty corridor with no interaction is something that should be celebrated.
>>
>>334963310
That's not how it works
They design dungeons so that there is significantly less work to get out than to get through it: usually through a series of rooms that all have their own way out at the end. It allows for actual content, actual mazes, actual design other than just "how do we dress up this giant circle?"

But it is.

Take your ideal of "significantly less work to get out than to get through it", and build a simple map based on it. The initial room is a hub where the final destination is blocked, yet it can be opened by flipping switches in the hub. Getting to each switch requires going through a wing of trials, with each wing's entrance unlocked by opening another wing's switch.

Each wing is a little circle, going away from the entrance before returning to it. If you concatenated all the wings into a long stretch, you'd have one big circle.

First of all, the smithing/armor system. In all bethesda games I loved the look of lower tier armor but in Morrowind/Oblivion you had to exploit magic for lower tier armors to be viable.

I fucking love running around in Iron or Fur armor just wrecking shit.

Second, the music paired with the exploration. Always felt comfy as fuck anything standing on top of a pile of dead bandits in a dwimer ruin or slowly walking through a frost encrusted cavern looking for traps.

Third, mods. After all is said and done and you realize all you are doing is KILL. LOOT. RETURN. you kinda want some titties or lensflare to look at for the next 500 or so hours

It's amazing how Beth fucked up with the optimization. I'm okay with graphics progression, but not when 1) there's no benefit matching the higher requirements and 2) Beth games should have as wide a player base as possible. FO4 should run on the potato-est PCs, particularly ones that could play Skyrim. A while back I tried all the ultra-low-end mods, they didn't fix the disastrous performance cost.

>mark and recall
M&R is dependant on how often the player wants to leave. Skyrim expects the average player to do one dungeon in a play session then inventory loot afterwards, so there's no need for a quick exit and reentry mechanic. But other games (Diablo) have very long dungeons which make a desire to return frequently, so an M&R system (round-trip portals) benefits the game.

>branching dungeon
If those branches don't loop back, it only breaks up the backtracking a line would have. Those small backtracks can be used as breathers, but Skyrim has one big breather in the overworld.

They're both good design elements, but don't work as well as circles do with Skyrim.

OP asked if it did anything right. Being better than Oblivion is a step in the right direction.

Steel Plate Armor was a pretty good design.
I honestly can't think of many things Skyrim did right besides allow modding still
>>
-A few areas like the Dwemer Mines were interesting to explore
-Letting you kill major story NPCs especially the head of the Dark Brotherhood
-Bows and magic were fun to a point
-Music was good, thought so much better than the areas you heard it in
-The scrolling 2D background used for the sky was amazing

Everything else was pretty much a failure. Even some of the things I named caused new problems that needed to be fixed with mods like killing story NPCs. And the fact that you could be invincible at level 15 with just a few archery and stealth skills.

It really feels like they didn't even playtest the game. Even something as simple as NPCs talking to you got old within a few hours and broke the very immersion they were trying to establish.

Ayup. Difficult to process, right?

You're right though. We should really just have one armor slot to enchant. Everything else is superfluous. Why we haven't done away with armor and levels in a world where everything scales is beyond me now that I think about it. Why scale when everything can just be static?

The crux of the argument is over the merits of multiple enchant slots as opposed to fewer. You failing to see that arguing "It's the same either way." by presenting one scenario not only works just as much in favor of your stance as it does his, but also that its foundation is fallacy. Bordering on false dilemma.

The only real argument here, boiled down, is "Fewer armor pieces is better because I like it." or "More is better because I like it." Saying that the effective value can be balanced to be the same in either scenario does no side any greater benefit. You only feel it does because of the bias you hold. Which is why your opponent, with a bias toward the other end, feels it benefits him as well.

Which takes me back to the snarky end of things. I propose we just make one hero with a signature set of armor and weapon. Screw customizing for looks and character builds. That's just unnecessary fluff. See, your argument for reduction taken to its logical end is not a tangent, Anon. While simplification is not intrinsic to "better" design, nor is the opposite true either. Your argument just draws away from player control more than his. And so I must mock.

Skyrim has the problem that you (or random vampires/dragons/whatever) can kill vital NPCs. But it seems totally random. Sometimes you'll pump them full of arrows and they just stagger around. Then out of nowhere a dragon swoops down and kills that same NPC and about 5 people in a town.

The game is just bad in so many ways.
>>

This has been a problem since Morrowind. We used to describe Bethesda as being good at putting one foot forward while hiding their withered, cripple leg behind a smoke screen. Lots of fun little things to get the tip wet but then when you try to go balls deep you find out you're in the unfinished shallow hole of the game equivalent of a tranny with a botched operation.

>>
>>334971568

Skyrim was more like a few interesting ideas kept me playing for about 10 hours. I still saw tons of flaws, but the promise of a big world to explore kept me playing. But no matter how long I played, more and more flaws appeared. Until it got so bad around hour 30 that I just had to stop playing. Bethesda has a big hard on for screwing animal heads onto human bodies. And here, class, we see an underaged memester shitposting without educating themselves by either: lurking moar or broadening their horizons before opening their fat stupid face to speak.

The quests are back to Morrowind tier fetching with none of the diversity, quality, or quantity Oblivion showcased. Skyrim was a step back in quest and dungeon design in nearly every way from Oblivion.

And that's a fucking shame because it's literally all they got right with Oblivion. This entire fucking series is "Good concept, few hitches." coupled with "Improved in one area from the last game, regressed in three others."

Not even saying Oblivion quests were -good-. Skyrim is just shitter than Oblivion's shit.
>>
sold a ton and became well regarded by the general video game playing public
>>
It still makes me mad that so many of the mechanics are complete shit. It's a good value for $20 but I would have to spend hours going through overhaul and texture mods etc. to fix things and then it would take the fun out of it

why don't they just copy dark souls but add more types of magic and stuff
>>
>>334953421
Oblivion's soundtrack was way too mild. Half the time there wasn't even any music playing. Skyrim and Morrowind were both better in quantity and quality.
>>
>>334975978
Already one of the first quests you can get is much different than this. The one in Whiterun for example, where the Alik'r ask for this woman.
>search for woman
>find woman
>woman tells the others are the bad guys
>you have to decide which site you chose
>you can hand her over or go the cave where the alik'r are
>when you find them in the cave, they give you another choice
>when you accept their offer you get another choice
>you lead them to the women and can kill them there without being surrounded in a cave
I found this quest ok. The only dumb thing was just that the alik'r came totally alone at the end. That made no sense, but otherwise it was good.
>>
>>334948876
It had okay music.
People/characters looked better, compared to Oblivion that is.

The animations for the game sucked as generally speaking.

Most of the problems with the game lie in the laziness of the devs, shitty engine, and cut corners because muh release dates.

Now you are obviously just trolling. If you don't like the game, just don't play it.
I personally do not care that much about story anyway. I play games for the gameplay and TES can have pretty fun sandbx gameplay with the right mods.
>>
Side quest design was unimpressive.
Navigation in Dwemer ruins/supercave was annoying.
Bethesda fucked up the economy once again, despite all its experience.
Same with balancing; you got imba real fast with sneaking and surprise attacks, or ranged weapons.
Totally imba and out-of-control smithing & potion virtuous cycle.

It's like they decided that making the world look even better, have a better main storyline than Oblivion and making the world bigger would be enough.
Actually, it was enough, they sure made a lot of profit.

It's similar as with the Total War series and other series, which keep failing in the same challenge again and again (Total War: The A.I. sucks both on strategy map and on battle map and individual troops' movements).
>>
>>334975978
While Blood on the Ice is the worst coded quest of all time, it actually had a time limit, if you put it off, Calixto would kill off all the female vendors.
However, you could find and kill him during any of his attempts, so you have a degree of control over who dies in the city.
>>
It appealed massively to casuals which made betas (pcfats and console war fags) which made me happy.

It also set the bar for further casual appeal which exclusively affects pc fats since console fags are mostly casual. Again, this angers the faggots which is good.

It had some nice music.

Yes which is why the AI in Attila doesn't engage unless it has numerical parity with your forces, retreats from battles and actively guards it's flanks during the fighting.

I know people shit on the dungeons in Skyrim for being linear but at the same time all of the dungeons in Oblivion consisted of cave hallways, castle ruins hallways, and elven ruins hallways. Once you had seen one dungeon, you'd pretty much seen a third of all the dungeons. Skyrim at least mixed it up by giving them unique areas and stuff that mixed them up a bit. Plus castle ruins were pretty much completely nonlinear and gave you multiple entry and exit points.

Call me a shill but to some degree I enjoyed Skyrim, at least with mods. Hypothermia mod made the cold, snowy mountains more intense and dangerous since you actually needed to prepare for trips through them by taking stuff for building fires and warm clothes to avoid freezing to death. Plus chilling by a campfire was pretty fucking cozy.
>>
>>334975085
Requiem had a lot of potential, but suffered from balance issues. Enemies would kill you in a couple hits unless you had end game heavy armor on, and you had to absolutely beat on anything but just basic bandits to kill them.

It was close to being amazing though, the perks were all way better, and increased lethality would be fun if handled a bit better.
>>
>>334980604
Not sure what kind of outdated version you played there but the version which I played (1.73) has an MCM where you can adjust player and NPCs damage.

It's an immersion mod, so combat will be very difficult and realistic.
>>
>>334949521
But Oblivion had Blade and Blunt. Skyrim just had One-handed and Two-handed. You'd end up the best one-handed swordsman who's also a master of one-handed axes and maces.

Except under each skill tree it branches out for each of the subweapon classes. So you've got one handed blades, war axes, and maces under one handed while you've got great swords, warhammers, and battle axes under two handed. Granted the branches for those ones are easy to fill out but it's faster and more effective just to pick one you want and follow that until you complete it. So you actually have more weapon classes to choose from than Oblivion with each weapon subclass having different effects with axe skills causing bleeding damage, maces/warhammers ignoring armor, and swords having improved critical hits.

I don't like huge overhaul mods.

I ended up using Apocalypse for spells(most of which I never used), SPERG for perks, ultimate combat for damage tweaks and ASIS for more spawns and AI usage of Apocalypse spells.

It was pretty fun but some of the SPERG perks are just too good, like the Block 15 one where you regen your stamina in combat as if you were out of combat, which basically means one low rank perk gives you +300% stamina regen.

>So you actually have more weapon classes to choose from than Oblivion with each weapon subclass having different effects with axe skills causing bleeding damage, maces/warhammers ignoring armor, and swords having improved critical hits.

It's just too bad that those weapon-specific effects are too weak to be useful. Bleeding damage from axes is pathetic and doesn't work on the tons of draugr you'll have to fight. Critical hit damage for swords is based on the weapon's base damage before skill, perks, or smithing improvements (and is therefore extremely low). Ignoring armor is perhaps the most useless one; even enemies that wear armor, like bandits, actually have a very low armor rating because no matter what they're wearing, they don't have a high enough skill to make the armor very effective. Instead, they just have lots of health. Therefore, being able to ignore their nearly-nonexistent armor rating means almost nothing. And of course, it's *completely* useless against monsters.

Also I SURRENDER. NEVER SHOULD HAVE COME HERE

>World environments felt really well done, mountains had actual paths that wound up them instead of Oblivion's "let's find the random bit that isn't too steep to jump up"
>Addition of crafting
>Magic felt powerful and the casting types were unique (albeit at the cost of a smaller spell library)
>Greatly improved the voice actor cast from Oblivion

Hey, that's thievest you fucking bigot!

I agree, but just having the Orcs have their own specific thing made them feel a lot more unique as a race, and gives us an idea of what their culture is like.

Skyforge Steel was literally the best weapons in the game, you could improve them to Daedric levels, which meant you didn't have to stare at those overdesigned Mattel toys.

The soundtrack was easily onpar with Oblivions, take the time to listen to it on Youtube someday, you would be surprised at how good it is.

I killed the living shit out of him as soon as I was able to. When I entered the room where he was playing dead I just let loose on his ass with arrows without even giving it a second thought.

I know you were supposed to spare him because "the dread father wills it" but I was on a warpath after everyone in my family but the Loli and Redguard (I missed the old man apothecary the most) got murdered and Cicero was easy to hate at that point.

That entire fucking quest line was just great. Probably the most fun I had playing Skyrim, closely followed by the thieves guild stuff.

>Skyforge Steel was literally the best weapons in the game, you could improve them to Daedric levels, which meant you didn't have to stare at those overdesigned Mattel toys.

It's too bad that they look exactly the same as normal steel weapons, though. There was a mod that gave them unique models, but I think the guy who made it removed it from the Nexus along with all his other mods in retaliation for the community refusing to accept paid mods a while back.

Though once you're a legendary hero, you should be able to destroy groups of bandits with no real worries. If I'm level 50, only shit like dragons and dwemer machines or particularly powerful fighters should pose a threat to me, not just some cunts used to mugging farmers.

>>334985607
Some overhauls suck, you're right. I only usually like them if they're really modular, as in you can tweak shit, or just outright remove it if you hate it, like OOO did in Oblivion.
>>
>>334994291
That's what I liked most about them to be honest, the default Iron and Steel weapons are the best designs in the base game, Dwemer clashes with it's golden hue and Glass sticks out almost as bad. Steel weapons are simple, but have just enough personality to make them beautiful.

I haven't seen any texture mods for vanilla clothes or the likes, just some recolor or change that's only slightly better but still not good enough even when maxed settings for graphics.

One in particular is the Mythic Dawn and Brotherhood robe set but in Skyrim they look like shit. Only mods out there either change it to some stupid looking skimpy thing or a slight recolor that doesn't change the actual texture quality.

Yep. The Thalmor barely enforced the Concordant until Ulfric started being a fag (it's implied the Thalmor tortured/mindfucked him into doing it to cause the Empire to fracture) and the rest is history.

General Tullius flat-out admits that the Empire is rallying its strength for a counter assault on the Thalmor too, but needs to quell the rebellion first so they can add their numbers to the fight. Ulfric and Tullius are literally fighting for the same thing.

For a recent playthrough I got Sexlab Hormones, SlaveTats, and mods that invoked Devious Devices equipment, be it for equipping or extra penalties. The idea was to post a progress update every now and then on /trash/, and see what my Argonian lass would end up looking like after some milestones.

Biggest problem I ran into was the game slowing down to an absolute crawl in the Tamriel worldspace, and it makes fighting off groups of bandits outside of dungeons much more difficult for the wrong reasons. I do need to get some mod debloating done, just not sure where to start on that.

Unless a mod has no scripts whatsoever, I tend to avoid removing mods in the middle of a playthrough. I know Sexlab and Devious Devices are quite taxing on the scripting engine as is already, but I'm just not too sure what others would be dragging the FPS down to the single digits with constant stutters when five bandits are charging at me in the middle of the game map, even with ENB toggled off temporarily. It's kind of disheartening to see videos of people playing the game with 2k everything and a lightweight ENB preset whilst at a stable framerate on a rig no better than yours.

That said, what's the general consensus to leave the values of these options in enblocal.ini?

>DataSyncMode=

>>
>>334996632
YES THEY DO. HOLY SHIT. I'll give you a recent example from smaller developer. Remedy DROPPED the engine they used with Alan Wake for a completely new one they made just for Quantum Break. They don't make anywhere near the amount of money Bethesda does. They did it because they're competent and do what's best for the game.

Bethesda still uses that piece of shit engine because they're too lazy to figure out how to use a modern engine.

Could you imagine how shitty GTA 5 would be if it ran on the GTA 3 engine? Thank god Rockstar isn't lazy like Bethesda.

They already take fucking forever to put out a sequel to their games. Fallout 3 came out in 2008 and we didn't get 4 until 2015. I know they went straight to Skyrim but that was still 3 fucking years. Gamebryo is an inefficient piece of shit, any ES or Fallout modder could tell you that.

They make decent games, but they're super lazy and could be making way better games if they actually gave a shit. Any other company would burn at the fucking stake if they pulled this shit. But because they make Fallout they get a free pass. Fuck that.
>>
>>334997178

I kind of wish Skyrim's scripting engine was a bit less anal in that regard. With Oblivion you could generally remove most mods in the middle of a playthrough just fine.

Guess this is one downside to having an active scene, too. Oblivion's modding scene went quiet after Skyrim got released five years in its life, and now Skyrim is approaching its fifth birthday and is still going strong.

Does Fallout 4 also have this fuck up?
>>
>>334998262

>>
>>334997921
Actually another problem I had is that every interaction with an NPC felt so scripted. At least in Oblivion they'd walk around and sort of talk to each other and it would be just a regular conversation. In Skyrim anytime two NPCs were talking it was usually the beginning of some side quest and it made the world feel very artificial.
>>
>>334948876

Honestly the one thing that this game did wrong for me that could have almost redeemed it entirely....was the lack of enemy variety.

I remember when I'd clear out a tomb in morrowind at high levels there was no telling what kind of horrible shit I'd find in there from Dremora, to any number of Atronach, to Golden Saints, and then those creepy ass Lamprey things ( I forget the names).

In skyrim it was always Falmer or Draugr....with almost nothing else. The mechanical stuff in the dwarven ruins did break the cycle from time to time but you'd think the tombs would have some other shit wander in there from time to time instead of consistently being filled with different flavors of the same fucking zombie, aside from the very few that had a boss in them (I remember running into the teleporting archer guy really early on...that was fun).

It did a lot of other shit wrong but it was minor by comparison, at least imo.

Skyrim NPCs will have regular conversations, too, and they don't always start quests. NPCs are either completely immortal (Important quest NPCs). Able to be killed by you but not enemies (Followers). Or able to be killed by everything. What you're describing doesn't happen.

no i mean that in oblivion you had quests that took place in town and were more story based. like the one with the crazy guy behind the church in skingrad, the haunted house in anvil, most of the dark brotherhood quests, the one where you sleep in that boat in and it gets kidnapped, just to name a few.

believe me, I put like 150 hours in on skyrim when I was a pleb, I know what kinds of quests it had.

No. Everything Skyrim did, Oblivion did better.
