Honestly I'm glad they returned to (for the most part) standalone stories instead of 'epic' multi-game story arcs. My favourite ratchet games are the PS2 ones where the story was for the most part just an excuse to get to the next planet and filled with cynical humor that can only be done by programmers and animators and not people who majored in writing at college
The games with 'professional writers' felt much more sterile to a detriment

This. People hate on it for the story being almost nonexistent and not tied to the main one directly, but the cast and gameplay was top notch. Dual Vipers + Rainbow Bullets + Lightning Mod + Gangsta style aiming was the best shit. Close second was the homing mines with any mod.

What? I've never heard that before
People don't like it because it did away with the free roam platforming to focus exlusively on missions. It was a fundamental format change that alienated people, not the story. 1/2/3's plots aren't tied to each other either besides occasional recurring characters and cameos, anyway.
Vast majority of people don't play ratchet for the story over the gameplay

I hated it because of no exploration, no branching paths, almost no platforming, disappointing enemy variety (the Future trilogy wasn't out yet), bland level design leading to repetitive gameplay outside of few, clunky vehicle sections.
It was an MP game first and foremost, and the singleplayer felt really tacked on.
That's not to say it wasn't occasionally fun, though. The Scorpion Flail was great, as were the music and writing.
