It really isn't about the LGBT character itself. It's about the character being present - or at least being interpreted - as a political statement. The obsession with LGTB subject matter has became identified (and quite intentionally so) with an ideological and political movement that frankly is incredibly wrong and dangerous, and that systematically and intentionally antagonizes it's surrounding.
People don't freak out about the character being gay, people freak out because they feel like yet another company has embraced a political and ideological stance they find worrisome.
